totally Worth it!
- Pros: Compact, efficient, awesome keyboard layout (contrary to some reviews), overall a great little unit! I use this for trade shows and when i'm on the road to access various sites, vendor catalogs, order management, etc...
- Cons: It takes a hell of a long time to boot! WOW (and it won't let me say O.M.G. without the periods! It's almost agonizing! I've knocked most everything except the touchscreen software and it still seems to take forever to boot. It could definately use some more RAM and a larger HD. If Fujitsu offers an upgrade option I would do so in the near future.
- Other Thoughts: Overall Fujitsu is a great company. I just hope they think in favor of helping customers with higher demands on an UltraMobile PC.
Perfect for Portability
- Pros: When a full size laptop is too much but a smart phone isn't enough, you've got the U810. Its small & light enough to toss in a backpack and not even notice that its there.
The performance and keyboard size are acceptable. If you want to type up a quick email message or check something online, this is what you want.
- Cons: The screen size is the biggest limiter for being able to use it for long periods -- at least for me personally. I'm not sure this is a fair con, for obvious reasons.
I have carpel tunnel so it can be rough using the keyboard. If I keep my typing under 5 minutes I am fine. For everyone else, tapping out messages shouldn't be a problem; it will just be a bit slower than using a full sized keyboard.
- Other Thoughts: I am on the road a lot but hate carrying around a laptop. For a while I was trying to manage my work on a Windows Smartphone. When I first saw pictures of the U810 I was sold instantly.
I've had my U810 since around October 2007. There haven't had any technical problems or failures with it. I haven't regretted the purchase once. That said, if you want to sit on a laptop for 3+ hours straight you really want to look for something a bit bigger.
A great little machine for the price...
- Pros: The main reason I bought this was to provide an alternative to my work laptop that would fit in my purse. It also serves as a great presentation backup if my work laptop goes down for some reason. The biggest selling point was the crisp screen; I saw this in a local store next to a Samsung Q1B and the choice was a no brainer. I love the 40GB harddrive and 1 GB of RAM, this baby runs Ubuntu 7.10 *beautifully*. I also bought a 32 GB CF card & a 16 GB SDHC card, too. It's a robust little beasty and the WOW factor is 10/10!
- Cons: The keyboard: it's not that it's small (I have very small hands), it's that they completely remapped it to fit it down that size. For instance, TAB is now a function of the space bar, pipe and tilda are not where you expect them. If you're a touch typist, this is NOT a good keyboard for you. Not a problem if you plan on mostly using the touchscreen. My boyfriend, with his dinner-plate sized hands, holds the machine and types with his thumbs, the way the rest of us handle Blackberries and such. :)
- Other Thoughts: Overall, I'm very satisfied with this purchase. The touchscreen is not as responsive as I like, and it's impossible to calibrate with Vista (I kept getting an error that crashed the machine). Ubuntu is an easy install and with a little tweaking, works well. It's a terrific back-up machine, and great for storing the personal info I don't want on my work laptop.
