3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It came ups quickly...in time for christmas. my wife loves it. nice little laptop for the money.

Cons: not enough memory. too many unnecessary applications bundled with it. have been waiting 5 months for my rebate check.

3 out of 5 eggsRebate Takes Forever

Pros: Nice little rig. does everything I need it to. Great buy at Newegg.

Cons: Don't much care for the extra apps (which I dont use) that take up my hard drive space and memory. I really hate that it takes 16 weeks to get my rebate when my Dell took 3 weeks.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent cheap laptop

Pros: Light, DVD reader - CD Burner, 4 USB ports. Has docking station support which I haven't used. Screen is bright and legible.

This is the first laptop I've purchased to run side by side with my main desktop and I'm not dissapointed at all - even though my list of gripes may be a bit long. Hardware, A+! Drivers and pointless software are another issue entirely.

Cons: GET MORE MEMORY. This will up the price a bit. Anyone that thinks they can run anything on bloated Windows XP with 256MB is delusional. I got a 1 gig upgrade, it went it in minutes and I've never looked back.

Unneeded, buggy, and conflicting drivers along with pointless software and trial versions installed by default.

I'm not used to the touchpad and the clicky deals under the touchpad are cheaply made. There is some stupid touchpad software installed that I can't seem to get rid of that does all sorts of junk I don't want it to. I am constantly getting highlights when moving the mouse around as if the clicky deal is locked "on." It was so irritating I broke down and got a portable USB optical mouse. I wish more computer manufacturers would use the IBM/Lenovo eraser-head.

The speakers are a joke, but I am using this mainly for business so I could really care less.

Other Thoughts: Toshiba installs WAY TOO MUCH JUNK SOFTWARE. I had to uninstall the incredibly stupid Toshiba wireless driver as they were arguing with the Intel proset wireless drivers - both installed by default. They had a bluetooth stack installed even though the laptop doesn't have a bluetooth device. This will lead you to much head scratching as you try to talk using bluetooth. I still can't get rid of the stupid AOL logo on my desktop. It seems to reappear every time I nuke it. There are a billion useless utilities and trial versions that clog up the system tray and desktop. There are two touchpad drivers neither of which appear to do anything other than mess up the touchpad functionality.

If I got this laptop again I'd save the drive image just in case, then format the thing and let Windows XP figure out the hardware. Whatever windows couldn't figure out I'd then install the toshi drivers for. This would also free up a ton of disk space used as backing storage for emergency repair.

3 out of 5 eggsDecent Comp

Pros: This overall is a good computer. But for less money the best buy is the Acer Aspire 1640 series, bigger screen(15.4"), bigger HDD(80 GB 5400 RPM), more and faster memory(512MB DDR2-533), DVD burner(8X DVD+/-RW).

Cons: None, just not the best bang for the buck.

Other Thoughts: Go with the ACER, its a much better deal.

5 out of 5 eggsTecra A5

Pros: Works great once you put 512mb of ram in. Have no problems with it. Great for the price!

Cons: The ram! Comes with a lot of programs I don't need, like AOL.

3 out of 5 eggsnot as good as expected

Pros: It is a good price with the package that you are getting. except you need to upgrade the RAM for sure to get any decent performance out of it. The 14" wide screen is nice.

Cons: only one memory slot is available for user upgrade, the 256MB comes with the laptop is under the keyboard which is inaccessable for users. The memory installation is also not as easy as you would think. Toshiba has pretty bad design for the memory slot. If you want to get a thin and light laptop this is not the one for you. It is not an ideal laptop for people looking who traval a lot.

Other Thoughts: Should have get the Dell M710 instead, it cost 100 dollar more but it comes with 512MB of RAM and lighter weight 12" LCD and you can customize it to the way you like.

5 out of 5 eggsTecra A5

Pros: Besy value I've seen in awhile, XP Pro a real plus for us.
wireless super-easy to configure, (once my wife found the switch, on the front panel Dear
Can't say enough about how great NewEgg is, we always look here first!

Cons: 256 mb ram
no firewire

Other Thoughts: Ordered Crucial 1 gb ram as suggested in a previous review.
Using as a storage unit for photography, so size was just right, and 40 gig HD didn't matter as we travel with a LaCie 250 gig external, (also bought 3 of these from NewEgg earlier)

5 out of 5 eggsTecra A5- Very Good Value

Pros: I purchased this laptop for my wife - and honestly, I like it as much, if not better than my more powerful unit.

Build quality is very solid/durable; the keyboard has a good feel and nearly full sized; the screen is very good. The 1.73 processor is more that fast enough for business aplications; internet surfing; email; etc

After at least 15 Newegg orders -they have yet to dissapoint me. Shipping was on schedule and the unit came double boxed.

Cons: No real cons. The supplied ram memory capacity of 256MB is of course marginal- but functional.

No problem - also order 1GIG of Crucial ram which I installed in about 5 minutes. The additional ram results in real performance gains.

Other Thoughts: Appears to be a real solid, good quality, good value, laptop. wish I had bought 2 !

5 out of 5 eggsHighly Recommended

Pros: Lightweight, fast, excellent price. Docking station support. WinXP Pro. Good battery life (2.5hrs normal, 3hrs if I am really conservative.)4 USB ports (instead of 2 or 3, which is more common.) Built-in memory card reader.

Cons: Not enough memory, silver lid seems to mar easily. Speakers are very sub-par, likely because this is marketed more as a business-class machine, so you'll probably want to buy a nice set of headphones.

Other Thoughts: This is an excellent laptop for someone looking for a thin / light basic notebook. It may not have the latest bells and whistles like DDR2, an SATA hard drive, or a DVD burner, but the excellent price makes up for it. I wanted a lightweight widescreen with docking station support and a built in memory card reader, and this is one of very few available. After putting in an extra 1 gig of memory (very easy) this thing scoots right along. It has met or exceeded all my expectations. Highly recommended. Also, called Toshiba support and had a live operator within a minute or two! Wow!
