The Acer Aspire AS5920-6574 lets you truly break free from your desktop system. The Core 2 Duo processor runs at 2.10GHz and there is 3GB of DDR2 memory to back it up. Storage is handled by a large 250GB hard drive and a DVD Super Multi drive.
When you aren't backing up files on the DVD burner you can play movies on the 15.4" CrystalBrite widescreen. The DirectX 10 capable GeForce 8600M GT GPU has 512MB of dedicated memory so you can run all of the advanced features in your operating system and games.
Keeping in touch is important; you get support for 802.11a/b/g/draft-N wireless communication. This lets you communicate just about anywhere at maximum local available speeds. When you're at home or at a hotel you can go wired with the Gigabit Ethernet connection. You can also add cellular broadband with a card inserted into the ExpressCard/54 slot.

Upgrades in non typical places
- Pros: The T8100 processor is on the new 45nm chipset, new this month. This also comes with 3gb ddr2, hdmi and great speakers. It also comes with HDMI and a 250 gb hard drvie not typical in the price range. The video card at 512mb is far superior, 128 being an upgrade on other computers. The windows premium is also a $100 upgrade to the basic, really just a fantastic computer.
- Cons: The hard drive is 5400 rpm and the battery is only 6 cell. Some higher priced models have higher resolution screens as well.
- Other Thoughts: At $1150 or lower for the next month or so I would say this is the best computer money can buy and through new egg you cannot go wrong.
Best laptop in this price range
- Pros: I've been using this laptop for a couple weeks now and I am very satisfied with it. I couldn't decide if I wanted a little bit of a bigger screen or not, but after seeing the upgraded video card / processor this was too good to pass up. The 8600m gt is a lot better than the gts AND it has more RAM on the card than usual ones. Also, the 3gb of RAM is a nice bonus, especially since other models in this price range don't usually offer this much. The screen is super bright, resolution just fine for the screen size, and the keyboard is nice and quiet. I was also surprised to find out there is actually a mini-subwoofer in it, sounds great. The shortcut keys on the keyboard are nice for music and movies. Oh and the built-in webcam is surprisingly fast.
- Cons: You definitely have to take the power cord with you, as the battery only lasts about an hour and a half, a little less if you're gaming. Hard drive is only spinning at 5400.
- Other Thoughts: Highly recommended laptop. The core2duo is great for multi-tasking. I usually have a lot of apps open at the same time and it performs great. WoW runs maxed out at 30-40fps, or 24bit color 1x anti-aliasing for a smooth 60fps, everything else maxed. You definitely want to grab a cordless mouse with this.

Thoroughly Surprised
- Pros: This laptop has a few pros that I can think of off the top of my head. One the processor is a great one. On high performance mode this laptop is fast. The graphics card was a seller to me as I like to occasionally game and my desktop is no where near on par these days and I decided that I wanted to spend a bit of extra money for a laptop that could game.
Another pro is when using this laptop on the go the laptop never gets really hot. This is very different from some previous Acers that I have used.
- Cons: None that really make me wish I had a different laptop. Sometimes the acer bloatware can get a bit annoying but its easy to manage the software. I know everyone cringes at the thought of vista but its really not that bad once you learn to use it.
- Other Thoughts: This laptop is great. It very good for the price and I am glad I made the choice to go with Acer and this particular laptop over the other brands I was considering. Acer has good support from what I have experienced so far.
Overall I would say this is a great laptop buy for anyone who likes to play the occasional game and also wants to get the job done for school or any other purpose one may have.
Would be great but...
- Pros: Installed Ubuntu Linux perfectly! Wireless, webcam, audio, video all work flawlessly. Good specs for a good price. I would give an excellent rating if it weren't for the stuck pixel.
- Cons: One stuck pixel - not dead - darn blue pixel lit all the time. Since it's only one it doesn't meet the 8 minimum required to return it. Still makes me mad. I've tried all the home remedies for a stuck pixel to no avail. Thankfully it only shows on dark colors. Also, bluetooth doesn't work (yet) for me, and the touchpad is so huge my palms constantly hit it while typing.
- Other Thoughts: Use the Ubuntu alternative installer to install as an encrypted partition for security. Install irqbalance to run cooler and save battery.
Great Deal
- Pros: Great hardware. 45nm processor, 8600gt, 3gb ddr2 all for a really great price. The screen is nice as well. This laptop performs very well for the money. Sturdy design, does not feel flimsy in the slightest.
- Cons: ACER doesn't really provide drivers for XP. Finding all the drivers you need to run XP is a headache. It is possible though.
- Other Thoughts: Some people don't like the grey color... if you want to look cool then by all means go over pay for a similar yet "stylish" machine. The only logical negative to a grey keyboard I can think of is that it may appear dirty after a year or two. Meh...
