Great net gadget
- Pros: Small, easy to use, very customizable if you know how to tweak - based on Fedora Linux. Has external ports for anything you might want to do.
- Cons: Battery life, somewhat weaker wireless than a good full sized notebook. Processor just slow enough that full screen hulu.com doesn't quite play smoothly.
- Other Thoughts: Screen is just small enough that the new Facebook profiles shift down instead of being 2 columns, making you have to scroll past the left column to see content. I still think I like it better than the other brand Linux netbook I bought my daughter.
Flimsy LCD, Worse Service
- Pros: Small
- Cons: Flimsy LCD
- Other Thoughts: My Acer LCD panel broke while I had it as carry on luggage. It never left my sight and the case was pristine. Acer wanted to charge me $199 to repair it. They said it could have been the air pressure or turbulence on the plane, and they were not responsible for "acts of g-d." I pointed out that the 8.9" screens were being discontinued and if their fragility was a reason. I was told that the new screens were an "improvement, " and again, Acer would not take responsibility for this flimsy screen. The rep said there was nothing he could do for me.
Useful Little Guy
- Pros: Very inexpensive. Does what you'd expect.
- Cons: Somewhat shorter battery life than I'd hoped.
- Other Thoughts: I installed Ubuntu's netbook remix, which I've been somewhat satisfied by.
In retrospect, I should have tried to use the provided OS, but familiarity with apt-get and such made me decide to just install Ubuntu.
Anyway, I don't think netbook remix is quite ready. Even with quite a bit of tinkering it has some trouble especially with the speed and responsiveness of moving between windows.
