No complaints at all
- Pros: It's lightweight, sturdy, great screen, best keyboard on a netbook, expandable through SD cards and USB. Good looking. Does the basics and does them well.
- Cons: Linux is complicated if you're a newbie like I am, but there are so many forums and blogs available that you can pretty much get the thing to as sophisticated a level as you might need with a bit of Googling and some patience.
- Other Thoughts: Look, the only fair way to evaluate this thing is in its own terms. All it's trying to be is a super-portable machine that does the basics. Don't use it to design space probes and you won't be disappointed. Word processing, spreadsheets, internet, email, maybe listen to a streaming radio program. For that kind of stuff, it's amazing. Amazing.
I got it over Black Friday for $250 from Newegg, plus $15 for an 8 GB SDHC card that doubled its capacity. It goes everywhere with me. Can't beat it. Newegg is the best. First unit they sent was DOA, so they did an advance replacement and sent another immediately. It's been perfect. I'm learning Linux and I have the thing all customized to exactly the way I want. Do I wish the power cord and brick weren't so big and ugly? Yes. Do I wish Linpus Linux were better? Yes, but I'm going to try Fedora 10 and Ubuntu 8.10, both as close as you can get to Windows without paying Bill Gates. It's a revelation. Go Acer! Go Newegg!
this thing is a hoot
- Pros: Small, light, and quick for what it does. It sits on the end table next to the coaster for my evening cocktail. If I need quick access to the net, it's up and connected to my wifi in a few seconds.
- Cons: One bad pixel :( The AC power cord is heavier than the laptop :) I mean just the the _cord_, not the power brick.
The touchpad is just plain nasty. Would much prefer a trackpoint.
- Other Thoughts: I've ripped a few movies to tiny 8G USB fobs. Can't play them with the Acer media player for some reason, but they play fine with mplayer or vlc. It will be handy on flights if the battery lasts long enough for a movie...
Great little laptop
- Pros: Wow, it's small and lightweight! Out of the box turn it on and its ready to go. Comes loaded with Linux, Firefox and Open office which can open your documents and spreadsheets. The small screen is bright and very clear. The built in webcam works decently and video recorder works great. The Atom processor is able keeps up with Youtube and even some multitasking while it runs about 3hrs on a full charge. I was pleasantly surprised by it's small speakers, it actually sounds better than my full sized Acer laptop.
- Cons: The keyboard is a bit small but it didn't take long to get used to it. The 8GB SSD will get filled quickly as it has about 5GB free from the factory. Upgrading the memory should only be done with someone brave enough to take the whole thing apart. Same thing to be said about upgrading it's "hard drive". Strangely the touchpad is really sensitive and I'm not use to having the click button to the left, instead of being to the bottom as most laptops. Wish there was a Bluetooth option from the factory.
- Other Thoughts: Bottom line is for the price you can't get any better. Everyone at my work was intrigued and a few people ended up buying one. If your thinking of buying one, by all means do it! If you are a power user, you might want to get the Windows version with 1GB. It's a little more upgrade friendly. As of this writing DisplaySearch reports that the Aspire one overtook the Eee PC in terms of sales and I can see why.
