durable little machine
- Pros: great size and weight, battery last about 4 hours per charge, bright sharp screen, easy to use and the accessory kit with the cordless mouse, case and DVD RW is a great add-on. Must be built sturdy as last week I accidentally left it on the roof of my car and drove home about 4 miles. When I got out on the highway, it slipped off and slid to the road shoulder! Got it home and called Acer who said to try booting it up. It was scratched up and on hinge kinda banged up but it started right up and is working fine! Really amazing that it survived a 55mph fall of the car roof. Support staff responded to my email questions very promptly-within an hour.
- Cons: takes time to get used to the small keyboard. The touchpad button is a toggle type and not that good. When I called support they told me there was no service center anywhere near Minnesota so glad I did not have to send it in.
- Other Thoughts: The Acer is a great machine for the money and I strongly recojmmend getting the accessory kit so you have the wireless mouse, case and DVDRW drive. Newegg shipped it out very fast and I have really been satisfied with them
- Pros: very portable, good size HD, bright screen, great value for the money. Built sturdy. After having it for 3 weeks, I accidentally left it on the roof of my car. While driving about 55mph, it and the Acer Soft case I bought with it, slid off the roof and the netbook came out of the case before it hit the ground. It was scratched up and one hinge was a little banged up but is still worked!!! It was amazing, that it still worked fine. The accessory pack is a good deal and contained the case, a wireless mouse and a DVD drive. Customer support was very prompt in getting back to me as to how to proceed after the accident(within an hour.) I love it and it does everything I need it to do. I bought the larger battery and consistently get over 3 hours per charge.
- Cons: Glad I did not have to have it repaired. There was no repair shop in Minnesota. Would have had to send it to Texas for repair. Might want to get the next model up if you want a larger screen.
- Other Thoughts: Great little travel machine and small enough carry in a briefcase or backpack.
Touchpad bringing it down
- Pros: The single core atom seems to me surprisingly robust, capable of running AVG free as well as facebook/pandora with minimal slowdown. Boot times are reasonable, and once it's booted runs fine. I have a athlon 64 in the garage, and I would say this is comparable for simpler applications. Complex single thread programs suffer a little in comparison, but multithreaded or multiple simpler programs run just fine.
Battery life is excellent, idling at desktop it estimated 6 hours 45 minutes of battery life at 98% charge. While writing a paper on battery power with the screen at 100% brightness it dropped 6% in 45 minutes.
The keyboard is a little smaller than I'm accustomed to, but took all of about 5 minutes to get used to.
The screen is 1024X600, which is sufficient for most webpage viewing, and at 10inches looks clear with decent dpi, minimal backlight bleeding, In my opinion more vertical pixels are needed, and with recent LCD price drops a resolution of 1280X720 shouldn't be a s
- Cons: Most glaring is the touchpad, maybe I've been spoiled by my m1710's touchpad, but in my opinion if the choice was to include one of this quality or just not have one, I would have just added a cheap optical usb mouse and called it a day, probably would have saved Acer money too. Not that it's completely unusable, it is in a pinch, but it is obviosly where they cut costs.
The GMA 950 is sufficient for most every day tasks, but will be the limiting factor in this system's ability to perform anything remotely demanding so far is video is concerned, plus it draws more power than the processor.
As previously noted, the paint on the lid does love the fingerprints, inside is not so bad, looking more like a matte painted brushed aluminum.
- Other Thoughts: The only real problem I have had with this netbook is the touch screen, with the GMA 950 you know what your getting, and the fingerprints are a very minor issue.
All told though, I am very impressed at what around what three bills can get you these days. This is a fully functional laptop (netbook, whatever) with decent storage space, decent computing power, and exceptional battery life.
