5 out of 5 eggsGreat for Price

Pros: Great for the price. I put a build of W7 on it and it works great. I haven't had any problems with any of the hardware and I've had it now for almost 3 months.

Cons: The clickers are a bit loud but maybe thats just mine but I use mine in class every once in a while and can get annoying from the noise. Not a big deal but just thought I would say it.

Other Thoughts: Good if you have a good desktop or laptop but want something simple and light to haul around and get the job done.

3 out of 5 eggsReplace the CPU for speed

Pros: Bright, clear screen.
Keyboard has nice full-stroke feel.
Keypad if you want it.
CPU is replaceable.

Cons: Viewing angle of screen is very acute. Colors change.
You're always typing on the left side of the screen because of the way the keyboard+keypad is laid out.
CPU is slow but replaceable.

Other Thoughts: Find an AMD X2 processor with same heat dissipation requirements (look for 45 watt processors) and replace it for a really fast, cheap laptop.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat entry level value

Pros: AMD 64 bit Athlon, 1 watt low power. Although it has ATI X1200 chip, it still have nice video. Have ordered 2 2 BG 667 memory to see if it improves over all capacity and throughput. Applications; MS Word, IE8 & DVD run great for single core. All hardware is up to Acer high quality standard.

Cons: Hardware like Pinnacle Ultimate USB HDTV state it needs 1.7 or above proccessor. Adobe Premiere requires more proccessor power, but you get what you pay for.

Other Thoughts: I purchsed this system to run Windows 7 RC, both 32 bit & 64 bit. Windows 7 has one heck of a lot faster video interface and many other enhancements over Vista. Great system for a new collage kid, wireless, video are very good, still working on audio beta drivers.

5 out of 5 eggsGood system

Pros: Does everything we need it to. This computer replaced a laptop we had for 2 years that went down. Same basic setup for less than half the price.

Cons: Comes with several 90 day trial software packages that I would rather not have to deal with.

1 out of 5 eggsSLOW !!!

Pros: NICE LCD, KEYBOARD.

Cons: THIS HAS TO THE SLOWEST PC ON THE MARKET. FORGET ABOUT PLAYING ANY TYPE OF VIDEO. WHEN I BOUGHT IT, IT WAS ONLY 289.00. I ALSO HAVE A ASUS NETBOOK (WHICH BLOWS THIS ONE AWAY). IT ONLY HAS 2 USB PORTS.

Other Thoughts: IT LOOKS LIKE A MID TO HIGH END LAPTOP. IT WORKS BETTER WITH XP. IT BASICALLY USELESS RUNNING USING VISTA. THE CPU SCORES A 3.2.

1 out of 5 eggsHDD Died 3 days after getting it.

Pros: Seemed nice for a few moments, was soooo cheap!

Cons: Had it for all of 3 days and I'm getting notification from SMART that the hard drive is dying. It will boot but takes about 15 minutes to do so and transfers files at a blazing 1mb/sec.

Other Thoughts: Would not buy more acer products if this is indicative of their quality control.

Also, didn't know it was a single core when buying it. Before the HDD died, it seemed zippy enough though.

4 out of 5 eggsNice Laptop

Pros: Very affordable for a Notebook... the system comes with basic setup, but overall it was a great buy.
I bought this for my wife who doesn't know too much about computers.

Cons: Windows Vista... XP would have been better. It only comes with two USB connections, but we purchased an adapter with more USB for 10.00. You may also want to get rid-off all the useless software, and trial period utilities, like Macfee anti-virus. Just go to cnet.com and get a free anti-virus program (Avira or AVG) instead.

Other Thoughts: We have never used a laptop before... it has always been a desktop for our household. Always heard the stories about how delicate Notebooks are, but with systems like this that have become more inexpensive it seem less of a risk to own now.

2 out of 5 eggsHard drive failed!

Pros: Wide screen for easy viewing, full keyboard, good starter computer.

Cons: I don't use my laptops for anything more than the basic itunes, networking, and email type stuff however the hard drive started giving out after less than 2 weeks and I had to return it. Also the sound when playing films or even online clips is so low I had to use headphones every time, and even playing music the speakers weren't very loud.

Other Thoughts: If I had to do it all over again I would have just spent the extra money buying something that would have met my already fairly low expectations.

Pros: If you plan to run XP on it it runs great. I run small repair shop and is perfect small laptop. Only ran vista on it for less then 2 minutes so I can rate how it runs vista.

4 out of 5 eggsQuite a bargain

Pros: Extremely good deal for a no-frills laptop. Vista Basic and 2GB of memory plays well together. Would not hesitate to buy another for less than 300. Quality is great.

Cons: Bloatware, very reflective screen.

5 out of 5 eggsSweet Mobile Unit!

Pros: One of the least expensive full size laptops on the market.
Excellent reception with WLAN (even compared to my PC's wireless N).
Looks like a high end unit.
Screen is bright and clear despite gloss.
Runs AMAZING with Windows 7.

Cons: Only 2 USB ports.
Screen is very glossy.
Speakers don't get very loud.
Comes with Windows Vista and garbage-ware.

Other Thoughts: Got this computer, started it up, and imaged the HDD. Once I had the original image, I threw in a fresh 320GB HDD and loaded it with Windows 7 RC 32. It now boots as fast as my gaming i7 PC (Win7 64bit). Processor never gets hotter than 127°f, and I've yet to run out of RAM. This is a perfect mirror of my desktop, but much easier to take with me everywhere I go, for about the price of my video card.

5 out of 5 eggsVista SP2 is now available

Pros: Just wanted to point out that Vista SP2 is now available. It should fix any issues regarding sleep mode and wi-fi as well as other performance and battery life enhancements. I did this straight out of the box and am happy to report it has worked perfectly.

Cons: n/a

5 out of 5 eggsInexpensive Laptop Gem

Pros: - Nice bright display, ample memory and storage (for the price)
- Easy to make 2 DVD system recovery set (see other thoughts)
- Numeric keypad!
- Decent battery life, easily over 2 1/2 hours
- Able to run Firefox, Thunderbird, Open Office, Windows Media Player (music) simultaneously nice and fast
- Surprisingly fast DVD copy, 35 minutes to completed duplicate
- Wireless networking works fine, no drops in the opposite side of my house from the router
- All the Aero desktop eye-candy works fine in Windows 7
- Movies from DVD, the hard drive, and across my home network play perfectly.

Cons: -Vista Basic. Ugghh.
-I'm not a gamer, but I would guess gaming graphics performance would be sorely lacking.
-Speakers are terrible, not loud enough and very tinny.

Other Thoughts: The only reason I even bothered to boot into Vista was the create recovery discs so I could go back to the default software load if needed. I deleted the recovery partition, formatted, and happily, Windows 7 32 bit RC installed just fine (no additional drivers needed). The only Windows problem I encountered was flaky hibernate performance, but I don't like hibernating my PC anyway. Sleep mode works perfect for me.

Windows 7 boots to a usable desktop in 35 seconds. Amazing.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent

Pros: It was cheap. I got it for 320 shipped on a shell shocker deal. I got more than I was expecting. The screen is very high quality (even though it is glossy, very reflective.) Battery is fine, about 3 hours on lowest power settings. Keyboard is nice and big. It runs pretty fast actually. If you google processor benchmarks, this one runs in the middle of it's class, so it's fine. I'm glad the ports are on the left side so they don't get in the way when I'm using a mouse on the right side. Mousepad is sweet, it has scrolling up and down and sideways. Battery chargers is small. Wireless internet is fast and very reliable, I was blown away. Vista runs pretty well on it. I use it for school, it's great for that. The speakers are actually pretty good. The screen looks excellent in the for watching movies.

Cons: Not a lot. Could use more usb ports, only has two. The screen is very reflective. The first couple of times you use it, it is weird to see yourself. But after the first few hours I stopped noticing it altogether. But be aware of that. Acer's web support is kind of limited, nothing like Dell's. The ten key has the keys changed kind of weird. The enter key is below the numbers instead of to the right, and the . is above the 7. Weird. I got used to it though. I haven't been able to get sound with WMP. I've been using Acer's arcade program to run movies, it isn't the greatest. Running on battery it messes up sometimes. Plugged in though it is fine. Sometimes coming out of sleep is weird, but I think that is more Vista's fault than the computer's. It is kind of a bummer that I'm not eligible for the Windows 7 upgrade, because this only comes with Vista basic. Which I wouldn't care about if Vista wasn't such a pile.

Other Thoughts: For the full price of 400 and shipping. I don't know if I would buy this machine. I didn't see too many that were better out there. I was looking at Acer's new netbook, and it's pretty nice with 6 hours of battery life and it weighs 3 pounds. I would say it's a toss up between this and that, because this is cheaper. You won't be disappointed with this computer. It will do everything you need.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Nice, bright display. The built-in wireless internet card seems to work even better than the ones in 2 of my desktop PC's. Absolutely no internet connectivity issues.

Cons: McAfee (free for 60-days) = garbage. It makes this laptop run slower. It's not really free since there's a huge hit on performance from McAfee being a resource/memory hog.

The display settings need an adjustment out of the box.

The DVD tray is a little flimsy and needs to be handled with care.

Other Thoughts: Uninstall McAfee and install a free anti-virus like Avast. Doing this alone improves the laptop's speed quite a lot in basic web browsing, etc. You may find you have no desire to install additional RAM.

Increase the DPI in display settings to make text larger and so that the web pages fit the screen/display better.

Great laptop if your primary use is light duty. i.e. internet & word processor. I chose this for my uncle and he only uses it for the internet, so I didn't bother testing games or other software on it.

5 eggs because the overall quality exceeded my expectations for a laptop of this price. For the most part, the cons are minor annoyances that can be corrected by the user.

4 out of 5 eggsFits the bill

Pros: No problems so far. I got what I expected. I knew the processor was single core, but for the price I took a chance. I'm not a big Vista fan, but everything seems to work well. Works great as a supplemental PC. Attractive cosmetically and wide screen is great.

Cons: I may be the only to complain about this, but I do not like all the ports being on the left side of the laptop. There are no ports on the rear. It's my first laptop, but just seems a better design could have at least split the USB ports to each side. I'm right-handed so of course I'm right biased. Also, it was a challenge to add a network printer as my other PC's run XP. As always, I found the answer on the Internet, but it took some time.

Other Thoughts: This laptop is not suited as a primary PC for anyone. I consider it entry level laptop for first time owner. I only needed it for simple tasks like surfing, email and light processing when away from desktop. Parents bought an eMachines laptop for $350 and it is exactly the same laptop as this Acer, no kidding, except for memory and hdd drive capacity. If brand doesn't matter to you, the better deal is the eMachines laptop for only $20 more. I only gave 4 eggs because of the processor. But the price was perfect for me.

5 out of 5 eggsYa get what ya pay for

Pros: I also bought this as the buy before noon special. I've been needing something mobile for the last year but didnt think spending 5-600 would be worth what i needed this for.

Cons: Dont expect much from the single core 1.6 processer. It's ancient in the computer world taking an annoying 2-3min to load up windows. Don't expect to multi task on this bad boy, I get lag just scrolling up and down web pages.

Other Thoughts: I bought this for nearly the price of my iphone

5 out of 5 eggsA great low-end laptop!

Pros: I purchased this laptop during the ShellShocker deal for $329.99. I am very pleased with this deal. The laptop seems to be put together fairly well for a low end laptop and doesn't come preinstalled with too much stuff (see: Dell/Toshiba). It runs great right out of the box, even with Vista.

Cons: None that I have found (other than Vista) which is out of NewEgg/Acer's control.

Other Thoughts: If you are looking for a low end laptop for basic computing (e-mail, web browsing, etc) than look no further than this laptop.

3 out of 5 eggsNO BUILT IN MICROPHONE? Haven't these been standard on laptops since 1995?

Pros: Cheap, full numeric keypad. most notebooks in this class only have 3 cell batteries

Cons: - NO BUILT IN MICROPHONE!
- NO WEB CAM
- WINDOWS VISTA BASIC (no free upgrade to Windows 7)
- BLOATWARE and TRIAL SOFTWARE

Other Thoughts: I really wanted to like this notebook for the price, but I needed this for class notes and to be able to do GTALK or SKYPE with my parents. I don't understand how Asus can sell a EEE 7" Netbook for $149 and it includes a built-in mic and webcam and Acer couldn't see fit to include with this model.... granted I can add an external mic or webcam, but honestly how much would it have cost ACER per machine to add them? Disappointed.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat notebook for the money

Pros: The quality of this machine seems as good as many of the $500+ laptops that I've seen. Good viewing angles compared to other comparable laptops, keyboard is easy to type on and includes a numerical keypad on the right which usually is only seen on 17" laptops. Battery life seems to meet claims of 2+ hours. Not much to say. Better than I expected for the price. As mentioned, XP drivers are supplied by manufacturer if you wish to go that route. I ran pc decrapifier and cleared out all of the junk (alot) and its pretty snappy for a single core. ATI chipset is a plus given the recent problems Nvidia has had with gpu's going bad. Nice textured black finish on the top which seems to repel fingerprints. 2 gb of ram is on one stick. Easy to add 2 more gb of ram as there are 2 dimm slots available.

Also, great wireless. Picked up 2 networks that are about a 1/2 mile away.

Cons: Vista basic is somewhat underwhelming but appropriate for the hardware. Video ram is shared with system memory. I believe it uses 256 mb for vga memory. Only 2 usb ports as previously mentioned. I haven't been able to yet figure out which dual-core cpu can be used in this laptop but if I can find out I'll be disassembling it and adding a dual core cpu.

Other Thoughts: This is not a very good desktop replacement due to the low end cpu but is a great alternative to a netbook for the price. Its lightweight given the screen size. Now that Vista is mature the os seems very stable and snappy even with a single core cpu.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat little XP box

Pros: Picked up three of these when on sale. Removed Vista and installed XP. Worked out great. FYI - Acer XP drivers missing the SM Bus driver. Picked that up from eMachines website http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/search.asp?st=pn&param=eMD620&site=emachines. Same chipset. No issues.

Cons: none yet

5 out of 5 eggsGreat real laptop, for the price of a Netbook

Pros: The screen is beautiful and very clear. Runs Vista Ultimate very well. The keyboard is wonderful! It's one of the few laptops that has a numberpad on the right-hand side. For a single-core CPU, it runs well and very cool. The battery life is fantastic for a laptop of this size (maybe 3 hrs with the lowest power options). I love the ability to turn of Wi-Fi and the Touchpad with the press of a button which helps when writing. Also it comes with 2gb of ram on one card, allowing an easy upgrade to 4gb just by buying another 2gb stick. The memory and HDD are easily accessible and therefore upgradeable. I'm amazed that this machine came with a DVD+/-RW dual layer burner, and it works flawlessly. Has a memory card reader that will take almost any media.

Cons: Ok, this laptop isn't perfect, but the positives outshine the negatives. But there are negatives. First is that it's just a single-core cpu. For ripping DVD's, it stinks. Speaking of stinking, it comes with Vista Basic, which is trash, get either Windows 7 RC, or Premium/Ultimate installed for a good experience. It's a reasonably large laptop, not as big as my old XPS, but still much bigger than my Eee 900HA. The machine only has 2 usb ports which stinks, because thats less than some Netbooks. The Radeon X1200 is not upgradeable in anyway and kinda stinks. It'll play WoW at the native resolution, but with the lowest settings. Call of Duty 4 is almost unplayable.

Other Thoughts: One of the Reviewers here said you can upgrade the CPU to an AM2 5050e. I don't believe you can. CPU-Z states that the CPU type is an S1, which is a radically different cpu type. CPU-z maybe wrong, but I doubt it. Even if you can find an S1 CPU, it may not be compatible with this board.

5 out of 5 eggsLaptops by other brand name

Pros: PRICE. Screen is perfect and is not a shiny glossy mirror better than you'd expect and very sharp. Light weight. Good hinges on the display, excellent keyboard layout. pretty good battery life. Very sturdy case design. 5 eggs because of price mostly.

Cons: Vista Home Basic- this is not a complaint but hard to judge performace with vista vs XP. Had to remove trial software bundles.
BTW this is the exact same unit as E-Machine eME625-5192 from TD (3gb, 250 HD) for $349 that i bought 1 month ago. is cheaper better or brand name? there are only 3 major laptop OEM's making the same box's for everyone, brand never mattered.

Other Thoughts: if this unit had an HDMI port it would be a great media player.

5 out of 5 eggscant beat it.

Pros: one of the best upgradable machines ever! while it comes with a slow processor, it can be easily upgraded with a 5050e, which i have. the 2gb ram is pretty good, how ever i upgraded to 4gb for an extra $40. it runs like a charm. for a total of only $400, this is the best buy ever.

Cons: the tech support is a little shody, since the techies are indian and cant speak very well. the hard drive is kinda small, but can easily be fixed. the only bad thing about this computer is its graphics card, with only 256 mb of memeory. and it cant be upgraded to more, its saudered in in. trust me i tried to no luck.

Other Thoughts: over all this is the best laptop buy i could think of. for only $330, plus $70 in upgrades, i would buy as many of these as possible!

5 out of 5 eggsSteal for the price

Pros: Price. For this price you can get a Netbook with a super slow Atom CPU. I did not run any hardcore tests on this laptop, but Geekbench score was ~1200 which is close to my old Pentium4 2.8GHz. Enough CPU power for most of everyday tasks, including 720p HD movies playback.
Only one SODIMM slot is used, so adding another 2GB of RAM is easy.

Cons: Wish it was dual-core CPU
