2 out of 5 eggsScreen problems after a year..

Pros: Fast, bright, and works with Linux distros like Ubuntu.

Cons: I've owned this laptop for a little over a year, and the LCD monitor is starting to die. This laptop is LED backlit, and the LEDs are not lighting the screen anymore. Whenever the slightest bit of pressure is applied to the back of the screen, some of the LEDs will cut out and the screen will be dark in certain spots. These are not dead pixels, but large dim spots on the screen. I currently have a dim spot on the screen that will not go away. Basically, the monitor on this laptop is cheap.

Other Thoughts: These ACER laptops carry a 1 year limited warranty - just enough time for the LCD monitor to die. Convenient for ACER I guess...

5 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop

Pros: - Thin
- Great battery life
- Excellent screen
- Excellent camera
- Fast processor, a lot of memory, sufficient hard drive

Cons: While they advertise that it has a special technology that keeps the laptop cool, it does warm up on the left side on the bottom after you use it for a while. However, the keyboard and the right side remain cool.

Other Thoughts: Overall, a great laptop.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent machine

Pros: Great battery life, and the 4500MHD is extremely capable regarding high def video. The processor is really incredibly powerful considering its tiny power draw. Other laptops have a processor TDP of 35-65 watts, this comes in at 10W.

Cons: Haven't had any troubles so far, owned the machine for 4 months now.

Other Thoughts: I bought the machine initially as a sort of HTPC. It's fully capable of performing the tasks as such, but since it just isn't an htpc, it's a little bit clumsy to use. I ended up with a 10' hdmi cable coming from my tv to my couch so I could just have the laptop sitting on my lap.

After about a month of that I bought a WDTV, and then this quickly became my work laptop--I'm a web developer, so all day it runs Eclipse PDT, and Apache2.2 with PHP. It happily does its work, and I would happily recommend the machine to any business user or software developer/engineer.

To note, i have also used it for Java development and WebOS development (for the palm pre). It performs admirably. I have not yet installed a linux partition, so I don't know if there are compatibility issues, but I don't believe there are any, from its hardware list.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic!

Pros: Light, long battery life, fast (very snappy and responsive). The touchpad took some getting used to, but I like it very much now. The rocker switch mouse button also took some getting used to, but it isn't bad.

Except as noted below, everything about this notebook is brilliant.

Cons: Bloatware. The first thing I did was download Revo Uninstaller and remove about 30 useless programs (not an exaggeration). No recovery media are included (I suppose I can excuse this since it has no optical drive), but if the hard drive fails, you're out of luck for recovery, since it has a recovery partition. Recovery media are $20 from Acer, something that should be free and included with the laptop. You can, however backup an image to an external harddrive or external CD/DVD drive, so you can get around it.

Other Thoughts: The screen flickers ever so slightly when I first turn it on or take it out of sleep. After 5 minutes it goes away, but with an LED backlight, I would not have expected this. I am concerned that it will worsen over time. We'll see. It does not bother me at all, I am simply concerned it could be an early sign of failure.

5 out of 5 eggsPowerful, well-balanced, elegant machine

Pros: As a new grad student, I wanted a machine with a balance between powerful desktop capabilities, portability, and price. This laptop is it. Capable enough of handling any task I've thrown at it so far, yet light enough and thin enough to carry with me for the day, where I can pull it out and work on it anywhere on campus.

When at home, I extend my desktop onto a 1080p IPS Nec display, another great purchase from Newegg.

For me, the lack of an Optical Drive is a major advantage. I rarely need to read a CD/DVD, if I need to, I just use an external drive I keep at home. No drive on my laptop means one less thing to break, heat up, take up space, etc.
Simplicity is elegance. Less is more!

Cons: Hard drive (a 500gig WD) seems slightly more noisy than my 5 yr old laptop's Seagate. (I've had great luck with all the Seagates I've owned.) Probably my imagination, but it concerns me enough that I am signing up for an online backup service, which is a good practice anyhow.

The track pad buttons are indeed stiff, however its certainly not a deal-breaker.

Other Thoughts: I spent many, many hours researching the optimal computer to fit my needs, sifting through hundreds of reviews, reading tons of specs. (I even made paper templates of various laptop screen sizes) Now I have a computer that I am very pleased with.

The extra performance of this model and the slightly larger screen are well worth it for my needs (over my next choice, a 11.6" Acer Celeron M netbook). No problems yet running software like MatLab, LabView, programming IDEs, Finite Element Analysis, etc.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent little laptop

Pros: Fairly quick little machine as is, pop a SSD in and get a very noticeable increase in responsiveness. Bought this machine for my wife, smaller size and longer battery life sold me on it. Turns out the wife is thrilled with it. 6-8 hours battery life, just her size of machine, snappy performance and shes in love.

Cons: Does not come with an actual windows disk which slightly complicates a clean reinstall on a SSD.

Other Thoughts: A little searching for the right info is required to get a clean install which was really annoying.

5 out of 5 eggsSexy Laptop

Pros: -This is laptop is beautiful. Simple, slim and understated, better -looking than most laptops currently available.
-Great value for the price
-Chiclet/island style keyboard is fun to type on
-Great battery life

Cons: Debris can easily accumulate within the spaces on the keyboard if you arent careful, just dont eat near it and youll be fine.

Other Thoughts: Some hardware/software is a little buggy on WINDOWS 7 this is not Acers fault, if you want full compatibility buy XP or something that your stuff was built for dont complain when so many things arent fully compatible with 7 yet

5 out of 5 eggshappy!

Pros: lite, bright, & NEW, inexpensive, long batt. life; slick!!!

Cons: low speaker volume, disappearing or corrupting cd/dvd drivers, maybe missing a few useful connectors such as bluetooth, fire-wire, sata, express card, usb3 & etc, &&& no optical drive

Other Thoughts: I needed to upgrade or rather needed a notebook update because of my HP TX1220 imploding, but I think I did better getting with this than getting a typical net-book.

I was kinda busy so didn't concentrate as much as I should have fixing the dvd/cd problem I had, but originally I couldn't create the restore disks as the Acer would only create the 1st one of three, and each start would have to start on #1 again.

THEN, the laptop would not even recognize my two external DVD drives at all, and I tried reinstalling the drivers by removing then etc. but this didn't work after many, many tries. Called support and because it doesn't have a native optical drive, they sent me to the $59 support line.

BUT...I found the "registry fixer" tiny file called CDGONE, and even though it is from about 2001, the small kb file fixed everything like a Champ! The problem and the fix seems like deja vu, but from when...? Anyway, I am now in love with this lappy!

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic Machine

Pros: Super Fast, Quiet, and Cool. Very slick looking, too.

Cons: You have to create your own restore disk (requires external DVD burner). Acer's backup software to create a restore disk doesn't work. Acer reports that they don't have an ETA on their own recovery disks (laptop doesn't come with one). Shows fingerprints easily. Glossy screen shows glare (though, what laptop doesn't?).

Other Thoughts: Other than the backup and glare issues, this machine is great. I regularly get 7 - 8 hours on a single charge!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Little Notebook, Cool, Long Battery Life, Nice Display

Pros: I've had this little guy for about a month now and I figured I've got enough time to write a review. First, packaging was great, came in a rubberized sleeve and was in perfect condition on arrival. The notebook is small and light, and it's a wonder how they packed it all in there. It's not as thin as the pictures from the front look, the curved bezel that goes beneath the front of the wrist rest does not continue throughout... that's pretty obvious, but it's good to know. The battery is not huge, it doesn't take up much room or at too much bulk to the whole thing. The battery life is great, and I routinely get 7.5 hours on a full charge. I use it as a secondry computer, so one charge will usually last me about a week of use. The wifi is strong. I get full N speed just about anywhere in my house.. 12 - 14Mbps downstream on tests. Boots quickly, logs in quickly. Track pad is very nice and the multitouch works but can be wonky. See "Other Thoughts" for continued "Pros"

Cons: Cons... well. The display is bright but does not have a great viewing angle. I expected this, but still, you do sort of have to look at it straight on to get full colors and light. The screen also doesn't bend back too far, it stops at, say, 110-degrees. Not a big deal but it's been annoying once or twice using it on the couch about to fall asleep. The track pad is good but can be wonky, zooming in when you want to scroll down, etc. It is not nearly as good as any Apple multitouch track bad... but what PC is? While it has plenty of power, I've never tried running heavy apps on it... I don't know how well it would handle heavy Photoshop use... but I'm mostly using this as a larger netbook, so I haven't tried. The keyboard is responsive and clicky but is not "Mac-style" chiclet and can take some adjustment too because it can be a little TOO hard. None of these "cons" are enough to reduce an Egg overall, but everybody should know about them. Sound is WEAK from speakers.

Other Thoughts: Continuing. The sound is WEAK out of the speakers but pretty good from the SPDIF/digital audio out. I'm just using ear buds and its got sound that's comparable to any iPod or MP3 player. So, you're not looking at 7.1 crazy good sound, but good enough.

I love the form factor of the computer, it's really excellent, and it really looks sleek and stylish. I wish that the pictures on NewEgg/elsewhere didn't show the stupid stickers all over it, it makes it look cheap, those come right off thankfully.

Oh, one BIG con. The biggest con: It ships with a lot of shovelware. C'mon Acer, stop doing this. I'm talking Norton Antivirus, some internet security, Wildtangent games, Office preview, and more and more and more. I spent a solid first 3 hours uninstalling shovelware from this. It's all gone now and I've got MS Security Essentials running great, BUT that is a MAJOR annoyance. There's still a few apps that Idon't know what they are, but I've left them on.

Anyway, GREAT notebo
