4 out of 5 eggsvery good netbook

Pros: I got this with xp and just as expected it runs like a charm. No hangups, startup is quick, would recommend

Cons: couple of issues- sound is very low. I don't use sound a lot so it's okay with me, but if you need good sound this one might be a problem. Also, right mouse is hard to use- I have to push the right side of the bar too hard in order to right click. It shouldn't be this way but I can live with it

Other Thoughts: overall- the cons are very minor to me and I am very happy with this netbook. I would buy again, and again

4 out of 5 eggsPerfect Mini-Me

Pros: Perfect complement to a desktop or bigger laptop. Love the 6 cell battery...get 4-5 hours. Runs fast on Windows 7.

Cons: Screen a bit small but to be expected. Keyboard is a bit hard to get used.

Other Thoughts: This is a great little machine for taking on the go when you don't want to drag your full laptop with you. Plenty of storage on the hard drive and lots of time on the battery. Its got all the necessary ports and a web cam. Make sure to up the memory to 2 gb.

2 out of 5 eggsAndroid Stopped working

Pros: Great speed with lots of HD space for such a small machine

Cons: Computer comes with an Android partition which has become unaccessible, Acer tech support is useless for this. They do not even have a recovery disk for this set up yet, so after 5 days of use lost android and wasted an additon $30 to basically have a standard Windows XP machine.

Other Thoughts: Get with it Acer, don't sell equipment you can't support

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: This is a nice little unit with lots of battery life. Nice to have windows XP and be able to run all my all software.

Cons: Be prepared to spend hours with Acer customer service. The battery tools tent to give incorrect readings and power settings don't seem to work. Customer service is not very helpful and they just want to rush and give you the first answer they see fit. You have to call 3 or 4 times to get someone that knows about these units. Most problems go away with bios updates.

Other Thoughts: Buy the extended warranty from Acer. You will need it.

3 out of 5 eggsproduct not ready for production

Pros: excellent looks, first and very promising android netbook, small, works with linux.

Cons: this product is pretty much not ready for production. android was simply not tested enough: it is quite unstable (program crashes, keyboard mix ups, hangs) and seems to have problems with recognizing the battery consistently. It is also useless because the android market has been removed: all you can do is browse the web.

The hard drive clicks too often, which has to be fixed (can be fixed by user) or hard drive failure is accelerated.

another problem is with the acpi. I installed linux and it turns out that not only the laptop they sent me has an OLD battery (at 94%), about which I'll contact them (for a replacement) when I have time, but it cannot properly commucate with the software (neither windows nor linux).

Other Thoughts: 1. the fan is always on, and it really makes your head hurt after a few hours (no, really, it does --I didn't believe this in the reviews either). Solutions that seem to have worked in earlier models did not work in this one...

2. the cpu temperature is reported wrong (both *windows* and linux think that cpu temp is around 24C (the house is warmer than that!), even though the fan is simply always on.

3. in linux, the cpu is limited to 1.33GHz (not 1.66GHz)! No one really knows exactly why, and a few people are reportedly trying to work with acer to solve the issue.

Here's the good news: all these issues can be solved by firmware, bios, and software updates. if that happens, this thing would become a wonderful work pc and a great toy to play around with!

Now, optimism never hurt, if only I can get my battery replaced :)

5 out of 5 eggsSuper tiny powerhouse netbook...

Pros: What sets this netbook apart from the other 10" netbooks out there is the Intel Atom N280 Processor, the battery life and Android.

The processor is the N280 instead of the N270, which means it is a 1.66GHz processor instead of a 1.6GHz processor. This isn't as big of a deal as the FSB increase to 667MHz over the 533MHz FSB of the N270 models. This is way more important than the 60MHz processor speed increase.

When I first booted it up, I quickly uninstalled all the garbageware, the free trials and installed all the XP Windows Updates. It runs MUCH faster without all that stuff.

I also installed 2GB of DDR2 667, which has helped out tremendously with multi-tasking. I didn't realize the default memory was DDR2 800, otherwise I would've installed that instead.

I haven't played around with Android too much, but I plan on doing open source development on Android, so having it on a dual boot is awesome.

Cons: There is a current issue on the Acer Aspire One netbooks where they won't come out of standby properly. From what I've read on the interwebs and what I've experienced myself, this can be remedied by changing the power settings. Go to control panel -> power options -> advanced -> de-selecting the "Prompt for
password when you bring your computer out of standby"

Haven't had the issue since.

Other Thoughts: The battery life is fantastic. Most netbooks with 3-cell batteries claim up to 4.5 hours and really get around 3 hours, but this 6-cell battery with the sound off and the screen turned down to its dimmest setting (which is still plenty bright) is averaging me 8 hours a charge on the first 2 charges. Both charges were spent with a moderate amount of multi-tasking taking place (like the removal of the initial garbageware and installation of new programs in the first charge, and some heavy web browsing (around 15 web tabs open at a time) and moderate multi-environment coding (Visual Studio and a GameBoy Advance coding environment) all at the same time.

Handles it all like a champ.
