1 out of 5 eggsAcer Aspire

Pros: This machine stopped working 366 days after I bought it. A real piece of junk

Cons: Pure Junk

Other Thoughts: I'll never buy another Acer product

3 out of 5 eggsGood Unit, But....

Pros: good price, ergonomic layout, good performance

Cons: Acer hardware is sometimes problematic

Other Thoughts: Performed weel, until things wore out. The power supply, from plugging and unplugging, became non-functional because of an intermittent short somewhere

5 out of 5 eggsGood value

Pros: Cost, bought for 399.
Still working after 2 years, HDMI port is convenient for streaming content to TV. Have run Ubuntu, Windows XP and Windows 7 on this and all have performed well.

Cons: none

1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy

Pros: Nice screen.

Cons: Has major start up issues with Windows 7. Slow running even though I am using less than a quarter of the space. I have only loaded Chrome and Dropbox on it and keep most of my files on flash drive(s). I have only had this PC since December 2010 and have had to completely recover the system once already. Don't waste your money on this piece of feces.

2 out of 5 eggsIt's great... when it works...

Pros: Screen Resolution

Cons: Won't boot after 4 months

Other Thoughts: This would be a nice notebook for the money if it lasted longer than 4 months. Now it just cycles on, shows the logo powers off, then repeats until I unplug the AC adapter and remove the battery. Acer support is very, very limited and now they want me to purchase additional support and recovery CDs even though the machine is still under warranty.

I'll think twice before buying an Acer again.

4 out of 5 eggsGREAT little laptop for the money!

Pros: Inexpensive (at $399), Ready-To-Use, Well-Equipped, Large Keyboard, Numeric Keypad

Cons: Windows 7

Other Thoughts: A GREAT little laptop for the money. I got mine from Newegg just after Christmas for the $399 price. I *was* considering a netbook - but decided for the cost of anything nice and the limitations, I decided to go with another laptop. This Acer replaces my aging Dell Latitude 510 which still works, but the hinges are shot and the Win2K was getting old.

Some people griped about the "off-center" touchpad - but this isn't really a problem as you will get use to it without even trying.

I played a DVD the other night and was prepared for "terrible sound" from the one, small speaker - but I was actually quite pleasantly surprised that it sounds better and louder than a friend's 2-speaker Dell Inspiron.

Though I'm a lifelong MS Dos/Windows user, I CAN'T STAND Microsoft's forced updates. Soon after initialization, the OS wanted to install THIRTY-FIVE fixes and I visualized this nice, fast machine getting slower. Just shut OFF automatic updates

4 out of 5 eggsGood, inexpensive laptop

Pros: - Fantastic ratio of features to price...if you snatched up the laptop when it was on sale.

- Everything works on Ubuntu 10.10 AMD64 after one minor hack. That makes this laptop an excellent inexpensive Linux laptop for those who may wish to do so.

Cons: - Embarrassingly awful mono speaker. I mean, it is absolutely terrible. Would it really have been difficult to find space for a second channel speaker, and to use speakers that weren't so awful? I have a ten-year-old laptop with better speakers than the one included on this machine.

- Windows install is absolutely loaded with "crapware". I hadn't expected anything else (and I hadn't even intended on using Windows much), but it's something to be aware of. I understand the monetary incentive for manufacturers to pre-load garbage software, but it still angers me every time.

Other Thoughts: No restore discs come in the box, but you are immediately prompted to create them when you boot into Windows. Have three DVD-Rs handy for the task. I was grateful for this, as the first thing I did after removing crapware and installing Windows updates was to shrink the NTFS partition and install Ubuntu.

Speaking of Ubuntu, the wireless driver isn't included on the install image, but is available as a so-called "restricted driver" once you boot into your new install. Also, brightness adjustment didn't work out of the box, but a bit of googling led me to a simple change in the GRUB configuration that fixed that.

4 out of 5 eggsgood mostly but a concern

Pros: It was easy to setup and get ready but at first I thought the video card had issues. Once the operating system was upgraded all was well. then the computer just died so I checked the power cord after letting stay plugged in for a while .... now it doesn't work ... so I have to ask about a new power cord ... a bit upsetting fresh out of the box.

Cons: Computer just died as it seems it is the power cord ... battery would not recharge ...

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointed with my Luck

Pros: Excellent Value, Look and Feel. Got a great deal on it $400. Everything worked. CPU fast enough for most normal/basic tasks. Good at browsing web, running Excel/Word/Picassa. Can play YouTube on HDTV via HDMI. Has enough RAM and HD for most people

Cons: From the start HD was making weird noises. But everything was working. At 7 weeks, it started spontaneously rebooting. Tried restoring from DVDs I made when I received NoteBook. Restore process completes about 90% and then does the reboot again. Too late to return to NewEgg. Called Acer, explained the problem and what I'd done to try to fix. They issued RMA immediately. BUT... I have to send it to their Service Center in TX (I am in NY) and pay $19 for S/H. Local authorized repair costs $200 out of pocket -- what a ruse!

Other Thoughts: it's still in transit. so not sure how long it might take and what I am going to get back. Will update later. Right now I am w/o a NoteBook for 5days already.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent for Price

Pros: Fast components for budget box, bright screen, decent keyboard (better than most), integrated number pad, responsive touch pad, reasonably sturdy, nice looking.

Cons: Low resolution screen - but knew that going in (typical for this class).

Other Thoughts: Off center touch pad works well but takes some getting use to. Crapware easy to remove. Acer branded utilities seem well designed (backup, file/folder encryption, etc). Overall an excellent buy.
