5 out of 5 eggsGreat Build

Pros: This machine has been working flawlessly for the last two and a half years. I can play StarCraft 2 on medium graphics. The battery is no longer good now though – it only lasts about a half an hour. But this is still running on my first battery. While charging, this pc is incredibly fast.

Cons: Battery not made to last to long. Not fantastic audio but fine.

Other Thoughts: I got this Vaio pc as a display model in a sony store. It was some percentage off, I forget, but it cost about $900 about three years ago.

3 out of 5 eggsNice build but low-rez monitor

Pros: Nice keyboard, sleek looking case, good battery life, fast graphics card.

Cons: The screen resolution is only 1366x768. I bought this laptop and regret not checking out the Vaio FW series. It has a 1600x900 screen for not much extra. The DVD drive feels kind of flimsy too.

1 out of 5 eggsWindows 7 Upgrade

Pros: Newegg is outstanding as always.

Cons: VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH SONY. I have yet to receive my Windows 7 upgrade and oh by the way I purchased this product on the first day, 06/26/2009, it was available for a Windows 7 upgrade and registered with Sony immediately upon receiving.

Other Thoughts: For my money I will go with Apple in the future.

1 out of 5 eggsI hate hate Vista and Sony support

Pros: Well made and lightweight

Cons: WinDOZE Vista is junk, it is so slow it is unusable. Sony support is horrible, I asked to downgrade to XP and they said no it can't be done. I found out it can be but Sony configured the system to be very difficult to do. They also told me that it can not be upgraded to Windows 7, as if I would throw good money after bad and spend another $120, I don't think so. Windows 7 adviser said it could be upgraded, Sony just won't spend money to support. Screw Sony and MS.

Other Thoughts: I performed clean install of Vista and downloaded all latest drivers, I was told this will fix it but it did not. Spent money to upgrade RAM and still useless. Should have bought a Mac. Loaded Ubuntu and it is very fast and stable and usable. I guess I will never make the mistake of ever buying Sony again or a Windoze machine. I just don't trust M$ to ever put out a decent OS. What they are saying about 7 is the same stuff they said about Vista. Fool me once...

4 out of 5 eggstoo much software

Pros: got this for returning to college, I have since getting it made dual boot running windows 7 64bit most of the drivers were already a part of 7 I only havd to get the driver for the mic from vista instalation. With the 4gb ram it has pletny of room for dual boot and school work. it has a nice screen size and the wireless lan works properly as does the wired lan large hdd bguilt in SD card reader

Cons: only has 3 usb ports was full of JUNK software that I had to get rid of first out of box almost 30gb on hdd plus the bakup copy on issolated partition. speakers of course are not very goodhave to make your own backup discs (3 of them) becaue everyone is too cheap to give them to you. does not have way to screw the external montior cable end so it just hangs there if you move it it unplugs. very limited as to the flash cards it can read still have to use an external card reader for some of them touch pad is very touchy sony will charge you $14.99 for the upgrade disks to windows. lots of trial sotware offersgood for 30 to 60 dayshave to try and find the otehr junk to remove from the drive so you can use it. it is made in CHINA wish the government would buy AMERICAN

4 out of 5 eggsGreat deal for the money

Pros: I'm thinking this displaces the T-Series Thinkpad laptops as my favorite bank for the buck laptop. At least until I see how well Linux runs on one of these. Generally very good construction quality except for the DVD drive and LCD/lid. Not even close to Apple of course but close enough for plastic and cheap price point. I like the trackpad. Works well with Windows 7 and should be the first thing you do after buying this laptop.

Cons: Bloatware but it is easily removable.

Other Thoughts: "Sony did the chiclet keys first, Apple copied."

Um, no. Chiclet keyboards have been around for a very long time before Sony or Apple made laptops.

4 out of 5 eggsAmazing value

Pros: It looks great and performs better. Very thin for a 15" with these specs. What's most surprising is that it handles heat like a champ. The laptop gets mildly warm at most, even when gaming. Fallout 3 plays great on Medium settings with the full resolution. The LCD is good, albiet glossy and reflective. The keyboard is perfect.

Cons: There are a few issues I have with the build quality. The body itself is solid. There is no flex when picking the laptop up by a corner or edge. The DVD drive is a bit loose and wiggles when it is out. The plastic casing around the LCD looks good, but has a terrible amount of flex. If you push on the back of the screen close to the edge, the plastic in front will bend outward and separate quite a lot from the LCD itself. The trackpad is sticky and can be a pain. Battery life is short. Ridiculous bloatware, but I did a fresh install of Windows 7 and Sony's Vista drivers seem to be compatible.

Other Thoughts: I couldn't give this laptop a 5 because of many nit-picky build issues and minor flaws. But overall, this computer is a winner. It gets all the important things right. If you want decent performance in a slim, elegant package for a great price, this is what you've been looking for.

5 out of 5 eggsI couldn't be happier

Pros: Let me start off by saying...Wow!

This machine is one of the nicest laptops I've ever layed my eyes on (yes even Apple's). What's even better is what comes underneath the beautifully sculpted exterior.

The graphics card runs every game I have at the highest settings with almost no latency. Movies look AMAZING on this is sooo crisp and sharp!

With 4 GB and a "real" Intel processor, the speed of this laptop is fantastic. I am still in shock of how well this baby performs. I bought this laptop so I could show off a little bit (it WILL turn heads), and I wasn't really concerned about the specs. But that said, this laptop does everything that my custom built desktop can do and MORE!

Even if this laptop cost more than 1K, I'd still consider it more than worth it.

Cons: Nothing. For less than 1K there is NO better laptop on the market.

5 out of 5 eggsSony VGN-NW130J

Pros: Sony provides the best consumer product for the money. This is a well designed product, smooth edges, slender base, narrow at the front stepped in thickness from front to back, smooth underside, good chassis rigidity. Excellent screen display, first rate graphic hardware and LCD. Nice track pad, works well. Good key board, Sony did the chiclet keys first, Apple copied. Sound quality is good, I watched a movie on my desk while I was building another Vista 64 machine at 3:00 am. Hinges are strong, seem to be very substantial. The standard battery I have is good for 2 ½ hours. Rest comfortably on my lap, smooth underside. Can pickup it up from either the left or right corner and the chassis does not flex. WEB button allows you to access the web via SplashTop without booting the machine. It appears to be a browser built into the bios, works well. SplashTop will not work if the PC is in hibernation or sleep mode. Smooth edges, nice package when closed, comfortable in the hand.

Cons: The DVD drive door sags, poor fit, there is a gap between the door and the chassis, I assume this is an early production problem as this is one of the first machines.

Documentation is non-existent there is none in paper or pdf format also not available on the web from the Sony site, this may be an early production issue.

Other Thoughts: I started out looking at an Apple but found it difficult to justify the cost for what you get although it is without doubt unmatched as a quality leading consumer product. That along with the expense and trouble of buying and installing Vista. Apple builds the best consumer electronics products in the market place today.

Vista 64 runs smoothly and elegantly after you spend 2 hours completing the installation and downloading updates. Sony and Microsoft need to work on making this a painless experience. Sony still throws a bunch of 3rd party software on the machine with no explanation about what it does or how to use it. They should hire their own software developers and put together a cohesive application package that matches their product design.
