3 out of 5 eggsAn average notebook

Pros: I really cannot come up with any extraordinary features of this laptop in terms of "bang for your buck."

Cons: - Comes loaded with software that often duplicates what is already offered by Windows 7, runs in the background, distracts you, and uses up resources
- Does not come with a Wind 7 installation disc, so clean install (without all the bloatware) is not an option
- The battery life is 1.5-2 hrs with light use, so chances are you won't even be able to watch a movie without recharging
- It is noisy: the fan, but also what sounds like cross-talk between the audio and other electronics
- LEDs that indicate wireless, hard drive, and battery functions are just tiny lights, with their respective symbols engraved in the black plastic next to them - in dark or in low light you won't know which light means what
- The power button is positioned on the edge where it is natural to grasp the laptop when moving it
- Linux-based Quick Web boot is a nice idea, but still buggy and really not ready to ship.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop, Luck of the draw

Pros: Solid performer for the price, very light, amazingly bright screen.

Cons: Laptop was faulty out of the box with either a bad HDD controller or mobo. Windows would consistently lock up, read/write errors plagued the Event Viewer. After multiple OS reinstalls, updating the laptop's BIOS, and verifying that the HDD itself was good (WDDiags tool, HDD hot-plugged into my work machine). As an experienced technician, I ruled out the obvious by reinstalling/updating/reseating everything possible and can only conclude that it was having mobo/controller issues.

Luck of the draw on defective parts? Maybe. Otherwise, the laptop was completely great design-wise and feature-wise.

Other Thoughts: I am a computer technician, and these are the experiences I dealt with when a customer brought this model laptop in for repair.

1 out of 5 eggsavoid

Pros: Blue ray, dedicated video card

Cons: This computer had registry error from the beginning causing random reboots and other crashes. Sony tech support was not helpful at all. Their solution was to reinstall the operating system after I was not able to perform any system restores. I regret this purchase

5 out of 5 eggsGreat chassis, good performer

Pros: Build: Very solid build. The keys are sturdy and have a texture, so they avoid smudges/grease spots from fingers. The keyboard does not flex. The keyboard goes the length of the unit and has a number pad. The touchpad is accurate with individual right and left click buttons.

Performance: I was hesitant about the i3 processor at first, as some i5 models (slightly higher frequency and turbo boost) were close in price if you give up the blu-ray. I am very happy with the i3. The dedicated 5470 graphics card is a big plus. The is a very noticeable difference between on-board graphics (shares cpu cycles and memory) and a card that has its own GPU and DDR5 memory. The blu-ray drive loads fairly fast.

Cons: Battery: The standard battery (3500 mAh) that comes with the unit gets between 3 and 4 hours use for web browsing, photo editting, listening to music. Around 2 hours for watching a movie. I highly recommend an upgrade to the high capacity battery (5000 mAh) which now gives me 5+ hours for common usage and the ability to watch a 2 hour movie and have a couple hours of battery left after it is over.

Builded Software: No disks. I miss those days when you bought a computer and your copy of Windows was on a disk for reinstall. Now you get to take out your own DVD's or an external hard-drive and make an image for reinstallation if need be.

Other Thoughts: I thought there was a lot of spamware. Lots of free trials for this, would you like to buy that. I have no tolerance for that, which is why after a couple days of getting to know the computer I put in my own SSD. After fresh install of Windows 7 and installation of my own programs and files, that SSD allows the machine to boot in about 15 seconds as compared to 40 with the HDD.

4 out of 5 eggsGood value

Pros: Easy to set up and not a lot of bloatware. I feel the price was acceptable for the features I received. So far so good.

Cons: Windows 7 home premium is missing some features I wanted so I knocked a egg for that.
