1 out of 5 eggsBroke

Pros: Looks nice and has lots of good specs

Cons: Does not work . . . turned it on a few times as this was a backup. Tried one day and nothing . . . bad motherboard. That, of course, right after the warranty expired. I guess the saying "you buy Sony you buy problems" turned out true with this model. Won't do that again.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible Laptop

Pros: 1) Nice looking

Cons: 1) Arrived with a bad screen and keyboard
2) After those got fixed, the display was still bad and the second keyboard went bad.
3) The wlan crapped out not too long after.
4) Sent it in to sony, got it back, and they only fixed the wlan. Still has issues and I am severely not happy.
5) Customer service is oversees and NOT helpful at all, and are terrible to deal with.
6) This laptop runs way slower than it should for its specs.

Other Thoughts: Do not buy a Sony laptop. Take your business elsewhere. I used to be a big Sony fan but I no longer am; I will never buy another Sony product again. This laptop is that bad...

2 out of 5 eggsUpdate - SONY Tech Support Came Through

Pros: When I (the Dad) called SONY Tech Support the rep couldn't have been nicer, and totally fixed the problem via a conference call with my away-at-college daughter. Took over an hour with us on the phone. A total manufacturer reset of the HD wiped out all data stored on the HD, but at least the computer didn't have to be sent in for repair.

Cons: 1) To me "can't find hard drive" error shouldn't have occurred with a new computer to start with. 2) When my away-at-college daughter called SONY the agent told her if she didn't have a backup disk they could not help her (we tried when we bought it but the unit would not allow us to make a backup disk). He just blew her off. Took an "angry Dad call" to get to a good rep who WAS a great help.

Other Thoughts: Too many negative reviews on this unit - buy something else. Mixed success dealing with SONY tech support. Whatever you do make sure you are calling the laptop tech support number 239-245-6310 not the "help line", stress the unit is under warranty, and don't accept a blowoff.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy!!!!

Pros: fair price, good feature set

Cons: Screen cracked while opening the top, with no sign of damage--Sony would not cover under warranty, repair cost gross exceeded purchase price. Sony very unresponsive not company I would ever deal with again.

Other Thoughts: Would not recommend Sony laptops at all, service was unacceptable!

2 out of 5 eggsDied 8 days after Return Policy expired

Pros: Attractive, nice keyboard, fast and good graphics - when it works.

Cons: Bought this for my away-at-college daughter for Xmas, got the panic call today that the computer "Can't find operating system" 68 days after purchase, 8 days after Iron Egg Replacement-Only Return Policy expired. Googled it and this seems to be a common problem with these units. Reason I bought Sony was for reliability. DOH!! Guess I'm about to find out how good SONY's customer service is - let's see if they will fix it. I'll update.

2 out of 5 eggsPrice was right.

Pros: The notebook was at a great price when I bought it.

Cons: It died on me after a couple of weeks of normal usage (web browsing, word processing and video streaming) Not sure what the issue was, but the laptop wouldn't boot and hung with a blinking cursor during bootup.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Daily Use Laptop

Pros: 1. Sony VIAO
2. Comfortable to work on and brilliant display
3. Sleek and well Built Laptop
4. Decently fast at regular laptop tasks-Surfing the net, Uploading photos from Digital Cameras, watching a CD
5. Zero Bloatware-I count this as a very user friendly feature.
6. Killer Pricing- $369 for this laptop is a very good deal, however, would not call it a steal

Cons: 1. Slow Processor
2. Low Webcam resolution

Other Thoughts: Got this during the BF sale for $369. This is my second VIAO. If you are looking for a daily use laptop at a decent price-look no further. For me, daily use means surfing the net, downloading stuff from the web, uploading photos from digicams, watching an occasional DVD and storing songs/media. If gaming is part of your daily use, look elsewhere. This is a well built laptop which will take a fair amount of abuse and still go on strong. Quite user friendly-no bloatware, easy to start up (install the Windows updates, please) and quite fast to boot. Gorgeous display. And yes, it looks like a laptop much more costlier than what it is.

The cons-not many that i see. The processor is not a very fast one. Multi-tasking would slow it down noticeably. In my case, I could feel a slight lag when I had 6 internet windows open with 2 of them being video downloads. Does not stop, but the brake light is on when you overload this lappie.

For $369, it is an exceptional value.

4 out of 5 eggsGood budget laptop for everyday use (After bloatware is taken care of)

Pros: Keeping in mind this is clearly not a top of the line gaming or video-editing machine...you are getting what you pay for:
-4GB of RAM and dual core CPU make for good multitasking
-Solid keyboard. Number pad included...I had to carry a separate battery-powered one before with my old 14" HP laptop so this is a big convenience.
-Good touchpad. Has multi-touch with some gesture-support. This allows you to do things like pinch-to-zoom, double-finger swiping, and making circular motions to scroll up and down which are all pretty handy.
-Video & screen looks good but HD results will vary depending on source. 720p trailers on Youtube and Gamespot looked GREAT and ran smoothly. HD on Netflix however was sadly choppy every time...but videos looked good at standard def. anyway. (All over Wi-Fi, one room away from router)
-Eye-catching shell and interior...will definitely get some attention at the coffee shop.
-HDMI out could be very handy when travelling

Cons: -Sound from speakers is fairly tinny. Nothing a pair of external speakers couldn't fix (or an audio cable leading to your stereo). With headphones sound is good of course.
-No lock/latch mechanism to prevent accidental opening.
-As mentioned, HD over Netflix was basically a no-go (standard def. still looked good though so not a deal-breaker)
-Comes with needless SONY software (bloatware) that slows down performance until removed or stopped permanently. It may have sorted itself out naturally after it was finished indexing files (music/video) from the laptop AND my network (!!!), but I wasn't waiting any longer to find out so I made some deletions. I've seen much better performance since I tinkered around with it for a bit.
-You have to create your own backup discs if you wan an external backup (can use 3 DVD's or USB, but you need *11GB*!!!)
-No dedicated volume or media control buttons

Other Thoughts: So as I mentioned, you're really just getting what you pay for here..not too many extra frills, which for the price is to be expected. It's *great* for everyday use...watching videos, emailing, listening to music, and surfing the web.

It doesn't come with backup discs, but as the instructions clearly state, the software gives you the option to create your own...so definitely don't go deleting the "VAIO Care" program since that's the starting point of the backup process.

I wanted to upgrade from my old laptop because things started to take forever to load, and when listening to Rhapsody while surfing online, the music would stutter while scrolled in Firefox or Internet Explorer. This laptop has definitely taken care of these things...certainly not as powerful as my desktop or a high-end laptop but for everyday usage I'm happy with it

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Black Friday Deal on a Pretty Decent Laptop

Pros: --black friday deal--20%+ off
--looks great (you really have to see a closeup pic or the unit in person to appreciate the textured look/feel the case and wrist rest has)
--awesome keyboard was a pleasant surprise

Cons: --trial-then-buy software loaded (MS Office, Norton, etc)
--4gb ram, when the laptop will take 8gb (easy fix)
--processor is slow-ish, even when not under a heavy workload
--garish chromed branding (on what reminds me of a stealth fighter influenced body)

Other Thoughts: you get what you pay for...and for a black friday deal (i paid $370), it's not bad. it is by no stretch a stellar laptop--certainly not for gaming on anything like a serious level--but then, i didn't buy it for that. i wanted to spend less than $400 for a computer that would fit in my camera bag so that i could have on-the-spot access to a screen bigger than the one on the back of my camera (sometimes you miss focus, but it can be hard to tell on the camera's LCD.) i can easily upgrade to 8bg of ram and stay under that $400 limit. now, if only i could buy a processor and stay under the limit...

the VAIO branding on the outside of case is huge (more than an inch tall, 4 inches or so wide), and shiny. that's going to have to change--for me, at least.

the 320gb hard drive is of course not exactly 320gb...which is fine, because i only need enough room for the OS and Adobe CS5. it might be an issue to other people, though.

haven't had it very long yet. we'll see how it goes.
