1 out of 5 eggsWiFI didn't work out of the box

Pros: There were none

Cons: Awkward to open, keyboard area to small, WiFi would display available networks until trying to make connection than all networks would disappear. Would not accept my WiFi password, which worked on 5 other computers in my home. Upon boot and first time logon found that one of the system USB devices was flagged as having a problem and was not installed correctly.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Hybrid PC

Pros: Extremely sturdy feel to the entire device. I used to carry around a tablet so I could draw equations and also as a multimedia device. I then had a small business laptop that I used to type out papers and do most of my day to day engineering work. I now just carry this device with the extended sheet battery and my large mobile powerhouse workstation for when I need extra horsepower or projects rendered quickly.

Everyone I have let use this comments on how sturdy yet light it feels as a tablet. Then when I open it up to show the keyboard their mouths drop at how gorgeous it is with the aluminum base and backlit keyboard with IPS 1080p screen. Being able to do all the useful advantages of a tablet and then being able to open when you need to use extended keyboard time is both a time, money, and space saver compared to carrying a second laptop.

This tablet has some serious power with the i7, 8GB, 256GB, HD4000. The turn on is literally almost instant. From pushing the start button to the Windows Interface is 3-5 seconds maximum from a dead start. 1-2 seconds from sleep. The Screen is drop dead gorgeous and with my Bluetooth mouse I can even do some light gaming. USB 3.0 Ports are very fast with a constant 380MB/s write to a USB Thumb drive. Writing to a larger 4TB External HDD was roughly 175-235MB/s.

Cons: Battery life without the sheet battery is just so so. When drawing equations and typing a bit connected to wifi I was getting just over 5.5 hours of battery with brightness at 85%.

I was able to watch Iron Man 2 and then the Avengers on it both on 100% brightness at 1920x1080 and had just over 5% battery. With the sheet battery connected I had roughly 45% battery left after that same activity.

The other annoyance is there is no place to hold the stylus unless you get the bigger battery.

Other Thoughts: If you are like me and want to consolidate the amount of devices you carry around without a doubt this is the device to get. If you do not need a powerhouse laptop this could be your stand alone device for everything.

My only wish is that it had wireless AC, a place to hold the stylus(in standard form) and a bit more battery but it is an amazing machine as it currently resides.

5 out of 5 eggsBest in Class

Pros: The more I use the SVD11215CXB, the more I realize Sony has hit this one out of the park. This is one TUNED machine... the SSD, the IPS HDMI panel, the optical studmouse, excellent WiFi (has not dropped the connection once in the first two week of daily use).

Cons: None. I don't think it's expensive for what you get. Normally, there's a premium for high power in a small package. The nearest competitive model (i7 3517U, HDMI), the Aspire S7-391-9886, costs $150 more, has half the RAM, a so-so 13.3" touchscreen, and major WiFi problems.

The VGPBPSC31 battery slice has doubled the battery life, and solved the pen garage problem.

Other Thoughts: Previous poster... you should have a second pen nib in the acrylic package the stylus was packed in. It's easy to miss.

I lost, and found, the stylus three times on a 9-hour airline flight. Crawling around the deck with a flashlight was no fun. The first thing I did after landing was to drill a hole in the stylus end and attach a mobile phone wrist strap.

5 out of 5 eggsGorgeous, Slim, Solid, Functional

Pros: Screen Build: Sliding screen feels sturdy, slides effortlessly, and props open to an excellent angle for viewing. The IPS panel removes any issues of viewing angle that might be apparent had the panel been a TFT or some other junk. The unit's weight well balanced when the screen is up and sits in the lap comfortably.

Keyboard: I'm so happy with this keyboard. I detest touchpads and am glad this doesn't have one. The size is excellent, with the key spacing perfect for typing. I have normal sized male hands and have Zero problem typing on this keyboard. Moving from a standard keyboard (PC) to this keyboard doesn't pose any typing issues. The included mouse buttons below the spacebar are handy for a Right-click, well placed, and not in the way. The back-lighting is a real huge plus. While the keyboard looks Minimalistic, its fully featured. I imagined the keyboard would be "obvious" and "bulky" - It isn't. The unit is well engineered and screen quickly hides the keyboard. I would never know the tablet had a keyboard that could be exposed by looking at it collapsed.

Fast: It's fast. Super snappy computer.

Stylus: Would rather have a Wacom stylus, but so far the Sony one included is OK. Its pressure sensitivity works on a quick initial test using Sketchbook Pro. The weight is nice, and it feels pretty good. It doesn't come with additional plastic nibs.

Weight/Size: I expected this to feel heavier and bulkier. I am pleasantly surprised at how light the unit is and it feels plenty thin to me when used in tablet mode. For 3 years I've been using a 13.3" Acer that is lightweight and doesn't have a DVD player. This thing feels small compared to that unit. Small in a good way (weight, thickness).

Quiet: This unit is VERY quiet. I only have heard the fan once when it ramped up a bit during an install and that was briefly. Even then, the fan was not loud.

Cool: Has a cool temperature in the lap. Much cooler than my old Acer laptop which wasn't that bad anyway.

Touch: I'm a mouse guy. Haven't had to hook one up yet. That feels weird, but it's nice you can get away with not using one easily. Because of the screen size and high-resolution, back-buttons and menus can be a bit hard to "touch" in applications, though. The stylus is handy for this, or the integrated mouse-nub on the keyboard.

Cons: Battery Life : So, this "con" is only from what I have read in reviews and from the Sony website. A max battery life of around 4 hours. I'm ordering the sheet battery from Sony's site ($149), but I'm ok with 4 hours, considering the versatility of the unit with its keyboard and extremely fast CPU/HD/RAM combination. While I'd love for this to last 6-9 hours, I'd rather have the CPU power and features that demand the battery.

Stylus: the end-cap doesn't fit onto the non-writing end of the stylus so you'll have a loose cap to contend with. Stylus is OK so far. I had a nice pressure-sensitive experience with Autodesk Sketchbook Pro, easily making marks that varied in value and width via the pressure alone. However, the computer frequently quits responding to the Stylus. This is easily remedied by touching the screen with your hand, then it recognizes the stylus again. I wouldn't doubt this being more of a Windows 8 issue and hate to list it as a "con" There isn't a dock integrated in the unit for the stylus. However, Sony sells a $49 sleeve for this unit that includes a place to store the stylus. I have it on order so I can't comment on whether it's worth it or not.

Cost: Pretty expensive. But, with so few options that are viable as far as a fully powered hybrid tablet, I thought the price was fine. I was down to this unit or the Samsung i5 tablet with docking keyboard. To me, the quality of this unit and its features makes it well worth any additional cost over a competing product.

Other Thoughts: Can't comment on battery yet and I've only had this a few days so this is essentially a love at first-sight type of review. I've installed Adobe Creative Suite 6 Master Collection (which was a remarkably fast install), Adobe Lightroom, Corel Painter, and Autodesk Sketchbook. Not issues at all on installations and everything runs great.

Fingerprints: I see people complain about them a lot. I can see some on the screen when the unit is powered off, but otherwise I don't notice them. The screen is completely covered in a sheet of glass that also covers the bezel. The keyboard and edges are matte black and do not show fingerprints.

I was pretty apprehensive about this design (sliding screen / keyboard). After feeling and using it, I realize I wouldn't want any other type of design. It's perfect.

5 out of 5 eggsConnector name corrected

Pros: see below

Cons: see below

Other Thoughts: References to a DB-25 video connector in my original post should be to a DE-15 video connector (commonly known as a VGA, except on the 'egg VGA means a video card for a desktop).

5 out of 5 eggsFollowup

Pros: see below

Cons: see below

Other Thoughts: The battery slice (VGPBPSC31) for the Duo 11 series has a pen garage.

Also, Win/D and Alt/Tab work in Win 8 to dump the Start screen when Esc doesn't.

The "two external screens" comment in Pros means you can connect an HDMI and a DB25 display... not that two external screens come with the SVD11215CXB (before someone flames me).

Screen protectors for the MacBook Air 11.6 work OK... they're about 0.5mm too small on all four edges, bit workable and have a broad price range. I'm in the "buy cheap protectors" and replace as needed camp.

5 out of 5 eggsThe best of the "two in one" models

Pros: Replace a notebook PC and a tablet with one device.
Lots of I/O, even a DB25 video and Ethernet connector ... not found on tablets. Two external screens!
A great way to learn Win 8. Hit ESC and the Start screen vanishes, leaving you essentially with a faster, touch/pen/studmouse version of Win 7.

Cons: None from my POV. I knew battery life would take a hit from the i7 CPU and the full 1080p screen. Weight (2.87 lb) ... knew that going in, but instead of toting around a (slow) Fujitsu Q550 tablet AND a Thinkpad laptop, I have one device (and one PS to pack). The only real con... no pen garage (but I've got a jacket on order with a pen holder). For more juice, buy the slice (when it ships).

Other Thoughts: The Duo 11 recognized and drove my Hanns-G 27" at 1920x1200 via DB25 as a second monitor. Add an external HDMI for a twin big screen setup. The reviews of the SVD11215CXB are in two camps: tablet reviewers whine that it's too heavy; notebook reviewers complain that the keyboard is cramped. Evidently NONE of those reviewers are in the target market for a two-in-one device. I don't see how a slider-ultrabook could be done much better than the SVD11215CXB. Unless the MSI S20 comes in under a $1K, the Vaio Duo 11 with its i7, big SSD, 8GB of RAM, and full 1080p will rule.

If the 'egg had them in stock, I would have bought through Newegg. Love the 'egg.
