The Q1 Ultra from Samsung is the laptop that doesn’t need a lap. It comes with an Intel A100 Ultra Low Voltage CPU, but it still uses DDR2 memory with a 400MHz bus speed and has 512KB of L2 cache, so you don’t have to worry about being able to run your software. This version comes with Windows XP Tablet PC Edition and is fully XP-compatible.
A 7” WSVGA screen displays an amazingly crisp 1024x600 resolution. Since it's a touch screen, navigation is easy, just use the stylus to point and click. To the sides of the screen is a full QWERTY keyboard that you type on with your thumbs while holding it, just like on your smart phone. You can also use the mouse/joystick and left/right buttons on the sides of the display for navigation if you don’t want to let go.
Connectivity is key in an ultra-mobile application. That’s why a USB sync cable is included to keep everything the same between your Q1 Ultra and your home or office computer. Built in Bluetooth and 802.11b/g wireless LAN keep you connected without wires. There’s also a 10/100 Ethernet connection for fast, secure data transfers. Samsung keeps you connected, no matter where you go!

Great travel pc
- Pros: I bought this to replace a Vaio T350 with a flaky sound circuit. I use it for travel, mostly Velcro'ed to my touring motorcycle dash for GPS (Delorme) and music. When not on the road it pops off to manage and store photos, check web and email, and watch movies. It does all flawlessly even with the A100 processor and gives an honest 3 hours+ on the 4 cell battery. The touch screen terrific and can be used with gloves if you practice. It is bright enough to see in sunlight. Movies; both picture and sound are much better than the T350 even though the screen is smaller. I love the fingerprint ID to eliminate typing passwords. The limited keyboard is really not a problem. The thumb controls on each side are well designed and have a choice of uses. The touch screen is invaluable and I'll never have another laptop without one.
- Cons: The processor is fast enough for the above tasks but not much more. XP tablet is fine but I wouldn't try Vista. It can't handle wireless streaming video such as Slingbox or watching a movies off another computer's HD via wireless connection. You have to download first, then watch. Wireless reception is poor compared to the sony but adequate for web surfing. Important: download the new driver to stop the wireless card from using 100% CPU. I think an extra or better antenna would help too.
- Other Thoughts: I bought the open box version and saved $250. No problems, and everything was there and perfect. Newegg promised to take it back if anything important was missing. It was obviously checked and restored by Samsung.
The faster U1500 processor version undoubtedly helps greatly with the limited mutitasking, but it uses more power and cooling. For me, the extra weight and thickness, not to mention double the price, makes this A100 version my choice.
Great for small thin kiosk
- Pros: XP instead of Vista
Vista has much better tablet functions than does XP, but XP has a much lower resource footprint, translating to better performance.
- Cons: XP instead of Vista - see above ;)
- Other Thoughts: I use these in remote locations as data collection terminals for employee time and attendance.
It gives me realtime collection and display by logging into our server via rdp.
Works great - zero problems.
For my usage, it doesn't matter which OS is installed, but if you want to run Vista, get the unit with the faster processor and Vista preinstalled.
I did do some testing, and using vlc to play avi's, I was able to pull streams from two different lan sources and have them play acceptably.
Web browsing is fine, and the wifi is very stable - the way I have these installed, my phone would be ringing right away if there was a connectivity problem.
Don't try to do any serious gaming - but you knew that, I hope.
The touchscreen is as good as it can be on a screen this small.
I agree that the buttons are pretty close to useless, but that's a matter of form factor. For our managers to do any serious manual edits to our timesheets, I picked up a usb kb and mouse.

GOT A PROBLEM
- Pros: BRIGHT SCREEN-- EVEN IN SUNLIGHT-- XP TABLET GOOD OPERATING SYSTEM--
- Cons: POOR RELIABILTY-- SCREEN WAS INTERMITTANT OUT OF BOX-- FINALLY QUIT AFTER A WEEK-- KEYS ON FRONT A REALLY UNUSABLE--- REAL HARD TO ENTER DATA
- Other Thoughts: VERY DISSATIFIED WITH SAMSUNG QUALITY-- NO 1000.00 DEVICE SHOULD FAIL BASICALLY OUT OF BOX-- WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF IT HAD 6 MONTH VERSUS 1 WEEK-- WHAT A PAIN. UNLESS YOU NEED THE SIZE-- BUY A TABLET LAPTOP THANK GOODNESS FOR NEWEGG.
