5 out of 5 eggsOutstanding!

Pros: Love everything about this even the "Bloatware", but I wouldn't call the software that comes with this "bloatware". This thing is solid as a rock and still going strong after a year and a half of heavy, daily usage. The performance is outstanding, but I did uberize it a bit (see other thoughts). I got the only open-box Newegg had for 600 bucks and nothing was missing!

Cons: NONE!

Other Thoughts: I loaded this up with the full 8gb of memory (Crucial 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Laptop Memory Model CT2KIT51264BC1339), and I put an SSD in it too (SanDisk Extreme SDSSDX-240G-G25 2.5" 240GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive). If you want to give your laptop a huge boost, buy an SSD. I love this laptop! Best and favorite computer that I have owned/used so far! When this thing dies, I'll be going straight to Samsung's sight to see their latest offerings.

5 out of 5 eggsSamsung RF711

Pros: Easy set up, great resolution and video, fast processor (i5)
The keyboard has easy press keys so you don't have to pound them to type.

Cons: It is a 17 inch screen so be prepared for it to weight a little bit, but not bad overall.
There is no indicator, or I haven't found one, that shows when caplocks is on and I find myself hitting that frequently.

Other Thoughts: Great system, great computer and the delivery and service from Newegg was outstanding. Very pleased with this Samsung RF711

5 out of 5 eggsGood laptop when on sale

Pros: Works nice and i bought it on sale for 750. Plays games at decent resolutions and frame rates. Does the basics good without problems. Battery is good for its size.

Cons: Not worth the full price for the specs that it comes with out of the box

Other Thoughts: Available spot to change ram is nice. Another hard drive bay is also a plus.

3 out of 5 eggsAnother one with occasional screen errors

Coming Soon!

Pros: Fast laptop. Especially with new 128 GB Plextor SSD (as boot/OS disk) and +4GB RAM (8GB total now; nice of them to leave an empty slot). Speakers sound way better than on my previous Acer laptop.

Cons: Minor: It's bigger than I imagined it would be (1st 17" laptop; not really a con, but it's less portable than my last 14" one). Also, color shifts in screen very evident when viewing edges, or anything from an angle other than straight on. The delete key is small and horribly placed... need to hunt for it constantly.

Major: Occasionally, the laptop completely freezes with a garbled/jumbled mess wiggling itself about the display (likely same error as in one of the 6/20 reviews!). Needs a hard reboot to fix it. Has happened half a dozen times to me now (3 of them today, hence the review/warning). No idea what might be causing it, but if it gets worse, it'll likely be on its way back to Samsung for repair/replacement.

Other Thoughts: I'll try to attached a video showing the screen problem I get when it locks up... which looks a little worse in person than in the video (screen unreadable).

5 out of 5 eggsGreat

Pros: The size of this laptop is great. The screen is high quality and very clear and very bright. Brighter than your average laptop screens. I work with laptops and all sorts of brands and this is by far the brightest I've gotten to work with. The i5 CPU in it makes it responsive, I can have a lot of apps open at once and not have my system lag. The venting is high quality too, they are on the sides and can have the laptop sit in your lap without a problem. The nvidia Optimus is fantastic. It will switch to the intergrated video when no program calls for video hardware making your battery last longer and less HEAT. the 540M runs very well and I don't have any problems running anything. I can't run the new games on high, but for a laptop of its price it was a steal on my part. I got it when it was on sale for 750. Oh the weight of it isn't too bad either. Full keyboard, keys are high quality and spread out. Favorite feature is the extra HDD for another HDD. Blu-ray is great in it!

Cons: I can't find any really.

Other Thoughts: It came with 4Gbs of RAM. Someone may argue that this laptop only supports 1333 RAM which is average speed, but if your going performance then spend performance price. I bought the corsair 8gb kit then had on sale. Works great with it and runs a little bit smoother.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Beautiful screen, big screen, great newegg support (as always)

Cons: keyboard began malfunctioning after only a few days. Shortly thereafter, it stopped working entirely. Already spoke to newegg today about it... Shopping for a new laptop soon.

2 out of 5 eggsNice laptop, very poor customer support

Pros: Large clear screen with good horizontal viewing angle, fast cpu, nice videocard (not the best but it is a lot better than the 9650m GT I have before), not much bloatware installed (Skype, Norton, Microsoft Office Starter), good looking design, second hard drive bay, has drivers for Windows XP on Samsung website.

Cons: Screen has horrible vertical viewing angle, outercasing is plastic, included automated Samsung programs can get annoying (slows down start up time), unreliable hard drive (see below), poor customer service (see below).

The laptop is defective from day one. After using it for a while the screen will become garbled and the whole system will freeze, requiring a forced shut down. No matter how I try to solve the problem (updates, reinstalls, etc) it persists. Finally I decide to send it in for repair. I was told by Samsung's phone support that the shipping will be covered, but it was not. Samsung's website stated that it has a real time update of the repair status, but it is a lie. Nothing is updated. I had to check in with USPS's tracking system and call into the service center just so I can rest assured that they received it and to find out the problem with the laptop: faulty Samsung brand hard drive. (continue in Other thoughts)

Other Thoughts: If I had known it was the hard drive I would have fixed it myself and not have to go though Samsung's support. After a few days I went to check on the update to my laptop and saw that it was repaired and was shipped back to me on June 16 2011 and that the service request is closed, but no shipping company or tracking number was provided. I waited until Monday, June 20 and called the service center when no package showed up. It turns out the laptop was never shipped! The service center said that the laptop was ready and told me to come in and pick it up! After clearing up the confusion they finally said that they will ship it back. If I had not called in to check, I would have never received my laptop back! This experience had left a very sour taste in my mouth. I took off one egg rating for the cons of the laptop, but I took off two eggs for Samsung's horrid customer support.
