5 out of 5 eggsabout 6 months in

Pros: Great performance/ price ratio for what I need. Its a Apple ripoff for a fraction of the price. I do computational science and use it for making inputs and looking at results and some light gaming. Screen is nicer than many laptops, which I feel is the area that most laptops lack. I'm still waiting for a OLED.

Cons: Case is plastic and not as solid as the machined aluminum that Apple has for its nicer notebooks. The track pad it a bit cheaper construction, it would be nice if it felt a bit more robust.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks great (with some problems)

Pros: The laptop is very fast. I have a model with an express cache (basically a small ssd piggy backed onto the slower conventional hd) and that helps significantly with bootup, and program load times. So far as far as performance goes, the laptop is perfect. I have found very few things that lead me to want more. And so far I have gotten good battery life as well. I have noticed a drop in the battery life since I bought this laptop 6 months ago, but nothing to the point that it is a problem. I did turn off the "light sensor" option and opt to set the screen brightness manually, and that also seems to help. I also love the fact that the keyboard has a number pad. Makes entering data into spreadsheets much easier.

Cons: I will start with the minor ones and work my way up... the smallest problem I have seen is a small 4 or 5 pixel area on my screen that is somewhat brighter than the rest of the screen. Almost like an oily smudge that brightens that area, but it is actually the pixels causing it.

Next is battery life... while I said the battery life is good, it is degrading faster than my old laptop which gets me a little worried about what's in store for the future. Also, since the laptop is sealed to make it more sleek, replacing the battery in the future will be a little bit more of a pain.

The light sensor doesn't work well... I have had too many occasions where the light sensor will pick up the light from the screen and change the screen and keyboard backlight settings. Really annoying when using the laptop in a dimly lit area. Lowest brightness works fine there, but if the screen turns mostly white (such as going to a mostly white website) the light sensor picks it up, thinks you're suddenly in a bright area, and turns the screen brightness up to the max. I eventually turned off the light sensor altogether and adjust the brightness myself.

Last and certainly the biggest problem with this laptop is the trackpad. The placement is terrible, it's too big and is constantly getting bumped by my wrists while trying to type, and will randomly click on things while I'm trying to simply move the mouse around on the screen. The drivers are no help and have no adjustments for sensitivity, although I was able to turn off most of the "extra features" that were causing more headaches. I was also amazed that the trackpad driver download was over 100MB! For a mouse driver!!! In any event, I had to eventually buy a small external mouse to use with this laptop since the trackpad is effectively unusable.

5 out of 5 eggsLove it

Pros: Slick looking. Love the brushed aluminium.
Not being a very good typer, I need the backlit keyboard to see the keys in low light.
The system boots fast considering it doesn't have an SSD. The hybrid drive fills in very nicely.

Cons: Not Ultrabook thin, but much thinner than my last laptop.

1 out of 5 eggsUpdate

Pros: none apparently

Cons: it dies

Other Thoughts: Right after my review laptop refused to boot up. A second laptop in a row! with the same issue! I'll try to get my money back and get another product, not Samsung this time.
The issue is: it doesn't get to POST and fans aren't working. It just powers on and that's it - no POST, no anything.
Deeply disappointed in Samsung.

3 out of 5 eggsNot worth it

Pros: Nice looking, fairly comfortable keyboard, light sensor dims the screen and keyboard backlight

Cons: Drivers don't com with it. It has cd with os, but not cd with drivers. I assume drivers are integrated in os, but what if you want to install different os? Maybe windows ultimate - you have to download drivers separately.
Only 4 hours of battery life if you want actually surf internet... I don't know how people get more, maybe they turn off wifi and all other non-essential devices, thus turning laptop into a brick...
Tuchpad is too large - you can't type properly if it's on.
It doesn't come with an micro hdmi to vga adapter. Why, why, Samsung? It is an expensive laptop, you really can't put 5$ item in the box??
It runs very hot. If I turn it on and don't do anything - 55C is what it runs. If you start do anything - 60-70C. (about 140-158F)

Other Thoughts: For such expensive laptop it is a disappointment. My first laptop died in 2 weeks from receiving it. Second one is still alive, but I hate it. Ivy Bridge suppose to be low power consumption, but laptop failed with design and runs it 20C above what it should be when it's idle! laptops of halsf this price do way better!
I wish I could get my money back and get something else, but Newegg doesn't accept laptop returns.
Also if you think of installing linux on it - don't buy this laptop. Linux doesn't have good support of this hardware yet.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop!

Pros: - Dedicated video card! Not the best on the market but it still runs everything I've thrown at it so far (Darkstriders 2, Skyrim, Guild Wars 2) it's run them all very well.

It's fast, a nice i7 and 8gb ram make it blaze through programs. I run after effects, photoshop, illustrator, and I can have them all open while listening to music and surfing the web practically lag free! Just imagine what a SSD on this would be like.

-Backlight on the keyboard! It's actually very nice to have.

-Sleek and stylish

- The price! I would have loved a macbook pro with rentina for my graphic deisgns but for less than half of the price I got this and it's almost just as good.

Cons: The battery life isn't the greatest but I've got eight hours out of use. You just have to optimize it a bit. I.E. turn the backlight keyboard off and turn the screen brightness down (it does have a light sensor in it for that).

The only other draw back is the trackpad, it's not that it's horrible but when I type occasionally I end up moving the pointer around. Sometimes it will register a right click when I'm just moving around but it may just be my laptop. Not a big problem if you prefer using a small wireless mouse like I do.

Other Thoughts: Mine is a slightly different model (np700z5c-s01ub) and came with a 1TB hdd, which seems to be the only major difference. I also got this as an open box item from a local retailer and talked them down. (Who ever returned this is insane but I thank them) :)

At any rate the samsung series 7 laptops seem to be the best choice for people looking for the power and style that the macbook pro has lead on for a better price! I would recommend this laptop to anyone!
