5 out of 5 eggsSmoking Hot Laptop

Pros: Beautiful 1080p display
Runs fast, cool and quiet
No bulky DVD/CD drive
Gorgeous mac-like design
Backlit keyboard is very nice to use

Cons: Mouse/touchpad is tricky
Battery built into machine

Other Thoughts: So far, I absolutely love this laptop. I bought a refurbished model here on newegg for under $700...which is an amazing price.

I've been shopping for a laptop for awhile now and finding a fast machine with 1080p resolution is very tough as the market has been flooded with low resolution displays.

It didn't have any bloatware (possibly due to being refurbished), although the Windows 8.1 upgrade had some hiccups. Make sure you visit Samsungs Download Center to get the latest upgrades for 8.1...after I upgraded my display brightness controls were disabled, but the update on the samsung site got everything working.

1 out of 5 eggsUpdate Win8 Immediately

Pros: Nice hardware. Its pretty. I think the hardware might be ok. But I haven't had much of chance to use it because Win 8 keeps installing updates and going into recovery mode and rebooting....again and again.

Cons: Windows 8 comes installed and you need to be very careful how you upgrade it. There are two completely different tools for updating windows on Win 8. Do not use the Win App version. Use the older Windows application version. If it open in a full screen its the wrong one. You have to install a patch to Win 8 before you can upgrade to 8.1. If you don't you might end up wasting an entire day the way I just did. This has been a major productivity killer.

Other Thoughts: Win 8 has serious challenges due to the multiple paths to upgrade but only one actually works. If you go to the Microsoft.com site to get help the site detects you are using Win8 and says you need to update from your machine. But here there are two tools. Pick the non-Metro (none Windows App) version is essential. You need to install the patch first.
Then you can upgrade to 8.1 from the Windows App store.

This is all very confusing and time consuming. I am very concerned about the amount of time I am spending on this machine. (Actually I am on a Win7 machine because the new laptop with Win8 is STILL installing updates and has been for hours. :(

1 out of 5 eggs2 days to lose restore

Pros: Its pretty.

Cons: The problem is that its brand new and its already crashed and done a complete reset on its own. It lost all the work I did. Win 8 started a "installing updates" without any warning, and then it failed to complete and automatically started a recovery which never completed (several hours). It was rebooting itself periodically through this. And finally a Samsung (bios) message said that it was going into repair mode. The next morning Win8 was back but all my work was gone. How am I supposed to use this machine?

Other Thoughts: I can't tell if the problem is the hardware or the software. Is this Win8's "installng updates" failures or the hardware. Looking on MSDN it appears that lots of people have the same issue with Win8 failing to complete updates and crashing. So perhaps I just need to install Ubuntu or Win7.

I'm kicking myself now because I should have bought a MacBook Air. Same price and I have never had this happen on my Mac Mini.

4 out of 5 eggsgreat!!

Pros: great design, and a beautiful responsive touchscreen. the touch pad is great and the keyboard is a pleasure to type on.

Cons: slow...for the specs you would think it would be speedier.

2 out of 5 eggsDecent laptop, but it should be better

Pros: The laptop is fairly lightweight and has a pretty sleek design to it. Samsung has been gearing towards a more "Mac-like" aesthetic professional look lately and this one doesn't disappoint. The display is quite pretty with its 1080p resolution and the touchscreen is more practical for general web browsing than I originally thought it would be. The touchscreen also works quite well with Windows 8's interface. USB 3.0 transfers are fast and there is more than enough space for the average user. Generally, it functions as a good laptop for web browsing, media, and school/business purposes.

Cons: While there are some good features about this laptop, they aren't good enough given the price. 1080p resolutions are more or less industry standard as well as USB 3.0, the speakers, although decent sounding, tend to be on the quiet side and are prone to crackling, the touchscreen, although neat, is still a bit of a novelty, the battery life is a little on the disappointing side even with maximum battery life saving features enabled, coming in around 4 to 5 hours, no physical media drives, no SSD, upsettingly slow 5400 RPM HDD, and overall slow response time.

Given all of this, I'm left wondering what I paid for at the current price. The things that make this laptop good can be found at much cheaper prices and the things that make it bad come as a result of it falling short where it should have excelled. The most frustrating thing was easily the slow response times which, although heavily affected by the sub-par hard drive, was still ranging in the realm of unacceptable. A laptop at this price and with these specs should not make its user wait several minutes before it can manage to launch a web browser or use the function keys to adjust the brightness. Speaking of brightness, it was usually messed up as a result of "power saving mode" which not only barely benefited battery life but also slaughtered the laptop's performance. Ultimately, this lead me to believe it was a problem with the Windows 8 on this particular machine. I have other Windows 8 machines and they run flawlessly, but it was not the case on this laptop. In the end, I purged Windows 8 from the laptop and installed the latest version of Ubuntu which lead to a phenomenal increase in general performance and usability. However, I would not buy this laptop again.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat but not perfect!

Pros: Outstanding hardware for the price:
-You get a touch screen with great colors and contrast.
- Core i7 in a laptop rocks!
- And most important to me: dedicated video card (FTW)

The touchpad is very nice. I usually don't like using them but this one is very well designed and looks nice too - great addition

Overall this is a solid laptop, not very heavy and a bunch of nice extras (hardware wise) that should keep this baby running for a long time.

Cons: Now to the dark side of this laptop:
*BLOATWARE! This laptop was crawling when it arrived at my doorstep. I couldn't even run flash based websites because of the junk Samsung decided to install on this laptop.
*TPM - this has an integrated TPM that gets linked to Windows 8 which can be annoying. Yes it's "supposed" to make your PC/Laptop safer but all I can see is this thing causing trouble (since I love to install software that hasn't been "approved" by Microsoft).
*No Blu-ray drive. I know it wasn't advertised that it would have one but I really think that it would have been nice addition to play Blu-ray disks.

*Windows 8 key: This is my biggest concern. The key is embedded in the BIOS. you can't disabled it or remove it or replace it. No matter what happens this key stays with the laptop. I can see this being a nice feature for people who have no technical expertise but for tech savvy peeps like me that's just horrible.

Other Thoughts: I tried to install a fresh copy of windows 8 without the recovery or restoration image that Samsung installs onto the hard drive. However the embedded BIOS key is not something that can be used with any of the Microsoft images you can legally obtain. This windows 8 BIOS key is completely useless and only works with a special Samsung windows 8 image that any normal human being doesn't get its hands on. Samsung wants you to use the restoration image and only that image.

I would love to post the workaround to actually install windows 8 if you have bought another windows 8 key from Microsoft but Newegg's product review guidelines don't allow this :(
Anyhow let me just say if you search around the net you will find it and there is nothing illegal about it - just a PITA.

*Hard drive:
Yeah it has 1TB which is great but it's a standard low rpm laptop drive. If you decide to get something nicer (like SSD) you will be facing the same issues as described above with the embedded windows 8 key.
Either you pay Samsung to reload the partition recovery bloatware image to your new hard drive or you pay Microsoft for a new Windows 8 key and do a fresh install.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop

Pros: -Nice Responsive touchscreen
- Nice GPU and CPU combo
-Amazing Speakers for a laptop
-Screen is sharp with little light bleeding
- Great standard mic and webcam for skype and other software that require such things.
-Full Backlit Keyboard is nice to type on
- Alluminum body is nice
- 1080P display
- Runs Cool

Cons: - Not very friendly when it comes to disassembly, Only RAM is easily accessible.
- Aluminum body and the surface in between the keys are fingerprint magnets.
- Screen is a fingerprint magnet ( Though this is really only noticeable when the LCD backlight isn't on very high or off)

Other Thoughts: When using any Graphics intensive software make sure that the switchable graphics knows to use the discrete 8770m instead of Intel HD 4000. This tripped me up when I first ran 3D Mark and received a ludicrously low score compared the average with 8770m.

If you don't see the 8770m under the dxdiag don't worry. So long as the switchable graphics is configurable your Windows is recognizing the 8770m, though I would run speccy just to make sure that the 8770m is functional.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid machine, annoying quirks

Pros: Fast, beautiful screen, touchpad configuration is intuitive and natural, chiclet keys feel great.

Cons: Stupid crapware and settings rendering OS a bit unstable, HDD is relatively slow, battery life is low

Other Thoughts: It took me two weeks to figure out why the wifi was dying on my machine. After uninstalling reams of programs, updating drivers, removing intel drivers, I finally figured out that the Samsung power-saving settings were getting stuck somehow and turning the wifi off within 5-10 seconds of turning the computer on. I changed all the power management settings to leave the wifi on, and now it's fine.

3 out of 5 eggsGood all around but the HD brings it down

Pros: Price for the performance, form factor, physical quality. Like the keyboard, touchpad and display is sharp.
Performs as you would expect with the CPU, memory, GPU level.
Size is easy to carry without compromising features and readability. Not sure on battery life yet.

Cons: Hard drive is big and slow. Case is not designed for end-user access.

Other Thoughts: Instructions (same as series 7) and a little effort (~17 screws) for a newegg type made it easy to swap in Plextor m5p. Made it the complete package and now I have a 1tb external drive for backup.

Warning you better know what you are doing for bad things might happen.
