2 out of 5 eggsWas great while it lasted

This review is from: SAMSUNG Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 Quad Core 2GB Memory 16GB 10.1" 2560 x 1600 Touchscreen Tablet Android 4.4 (KitKat)

Pros: Sufficiently powerful for its time. Aesthetically pleasing exterior. No seriously, it's quite pretty. Slim and light build.

Cons: I purchased the tablet in August of 2014. A month before the warranty expired, the battery started reporting its charge level incorrectly after playing a game. I chalked this up to heat thanks to the graphically demanding game. Outside of the game, the battery life was wonderful. Then I tried less graphically demanding games (think 8-bit games, zero 3D rendering required) and the same thing happened.

Then one day (a week after the warranty expired) Bluetooth wouldn't turn on. Then WiFi wouldn't turn on. The battery still plunged if I was doing anything other than looking at a document. WiFi still works intermittently for a few minutes, but only if I've let the battery discharge completely and left it to sit for a few days.

I've done several factory resets, and was pondering flashing the tablet back to earlier firmware/software versions, but decided not to when I realized that the tablet is warm/borderline hot in the top right corner of the chassis despite having been turned off for hours on a 40 degree (Fahrenheit, naturally) day. Of course that speaks to a deeper issue that I no longer care to try and diagnose.

All said and done, I DID resolve the issue! I purchased a 64gb Apple iPad Air 2, since even my original iPad from 2010 works flawlessly.

3 out of 5 eggsCould have been so much better

This review is from: SAMSUNG Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 Quad Core 2GB Memory 16GB 10.1" 2560 x 1600 Touchscreen Tablet Android 4.4 (KitKat)

Pros: * Great screen
* Weight
* High-end specs

Cons: * Ugly and useless "Magazine UI"
* TouchWiz overlay causes performance problems
* Bloatware
* Redundant "Samsung account" features

Other Thoughts: I've had a Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 for almost a year. It's a good tablet, but it could have been so much better.

It has a lot of good points: the specs are top-notch, the screen is superb, and *some* of the Sammy add-ons are useful.

HOWEVER -- those pros are outweighed by the performance hit from the heavy-handed TouchWiz overlay and their so-called "Magazine UI."

The biggest offender is Magazine (which cannot be disabled without rooting). This consists of several home screens that are only able to show giant, useless Flipboard and social media widgets.

You have to leave at least one Magazine home screen, even if you have killed all of the Magazine widgets. This would be less annoying if the widgets actually worked or were useful, but no. The Flipboard ones frequently don't update, the calendar shows a calendar but not your events, etc.

Since the widgets suck, I removed all of them. I could not delete all of the pre-loaded Magazine screens, though; I had to leave one blank, ugly blue home screen that can only be used for Magazine widgets.

The overdone UI causes performance problems as well. In games, the tablet freezes and stutters. Even in simple apps, there are lags: tap app menu icon > wait a second > menu appears. Sometimes I think an app has crashed, but then it responds. The same apps run fine on my GS4.

Even just in the general UI, the 10.1 feels like it's a step behind: the Home button lags for a second before it does anything, the unlock screen lags for 1-2 seconds before unlocking, etc. (Yes, I have turned off animations in the developer options.)

The problem is too much TouchWiz for the hardware. I briefly had a Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2, which I exchanged for the 10.1 because it was too big and heavy. However, the 12.2 has 3GB of RAM (vs 2GB on the 10.1), and it did not exhibit any of these lag and stutter problems.

My final beefs have to do with bloatware and Sammy "enhancements." There is a ton of pre-loaded crapware, some of which loads at startup, that cannot be removed or disabled. For example:

* "Allshare Cast Dongle Firmware Updater" runs all the time. I don't own that product. Can't be disabled.

* Magazine UI cannot be disabled.

* bundled Hancom Office is mediocre, but updated (through their proprietary updater) 1-2 times per week or more. 1st launch after every update, you have to agree AGAIN to some stupid font license.

* you can disable Hancom Office, but you can't remove it; so it still takes up space on the device.

* they try to force you into setting up a Samsung account, which offers redundant features (app store, backup, calendar & bookmark sync, etc) that are already provided in better form by Android. Just another place for your private info to get stolen from, IMHO.

Bottom line is that I'm disappointed in the Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1. It could have been a great product if Sammy had not been so gung-ho about adding poorly-executed "premium" features. They ruined it with mediocre softwa

4 out of 5 eggsGreat ...until it quit reading SD Card

This review is from: SAMSUNG Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 Quad Core 2GB Memory 16GB 10.1" 2560 x 1600 Touchscreen Tablet Android 4.4 (KitKat)

Pros: Ease of use; clarity of screen
Good price on sale
Large number of free and inexpensive apps
Samsung "Experience" desk at Best Buy stores for Samsung help

Cons: Tablet quit recognizing the SD card after ten days.
Lousy Samsung tech support.
Slow process for Newegg replacement

Other Thoughts: I would have given this Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 tablet five stars except that it quit recognizing my Samsung micro SD card after ten days of use. Called Samsung tech support which just kept telling me to insert the card, which I had already done many times along with reformatting it, verifying that it worked in my laptop, using another card which behaved the same, etc. He finally told me to take the tablet to a Best Buy store because they have Samsung employees at their "Samsung Experience" desks. He tried a few things and confirmed that there was a hardware issue. I phoned Newegg as it was less than 30 days old, and was issued an RMA number with a return UPS label. Now just waiting for them to process the return and verify that it is in fact defective.

4 out of 5 eggsI love it...but

This review is from: SAMSUNG Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 Quad Core 2GB Memory 16GB 10.1" 2560 x 1600 Touchscreen Tablet Android 4.4 (KitKat)

Pros: I've had the Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 for a month and love it!! It's every bit as good as the iPads I used to have. The split screen to allow 2 apps to be up at the same time is brilliant! I always hated that my iPads couldn't do that. The picture is gorgeous. I don't think they can make them anymore clear to the human eye.

Setting up e-mail accounts, Google Play account, and other stuff is very easy and fairly intuitive. Drop Box makes saving/synching Galaxy info very easy.

Cons: There are a few drawbacks to the Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1. There aren't nearly as many cases for it as there are for Apple products. Also, I don't believe they have a tool to manage Apps, Music, Pictures, and App Data as iTunes does for iPads. This means making sure all your tablet data is backed up is a little more work than just letting iTunes manage it. If I find an easy Samsung backup tool, I'll update this review.

Most of my cons are with the Google Play store and their apps, so I won't beat up Samsung's wonderful tablet for Google's shortcomings except to say this tablet is largely tied to the Google Play Store (which is inferior to Apple's App Store IMO). While you can allow apps from "outside sources", I think they advise against it.

Other Thoughts: I've always hated how expensive Apple products are and how they make everything proprietary. Now that the rest of the market has caught up to them in quality, I decided to try out an Android.

I love that Apple is an American company and would rather buy from them, but when I can get a comparable product for 25%-30% cheaper, I'm compelled to try it. They're both made in China, so I presume Apples is more expensive, because it's perceived as superior...and maybe it is. But if you're on a tight budget (as I am), you're willing to settle for something 95% as good (and in some cases better, like the split screen) for 70% the cost.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: SAMSUNG Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 Quad Core 2GB Memory 16GB 10.1" 2560 x 1600 Touchscreen Tablet Android 4.4 (KitKat)

Pros: Solid build, beautiful display, lightweight. Perfect size for me, have been researching for awhile. Lots of features. Quad core processing is fast, no hiccups experienced. Overall, I really like this product.

Cons: The only thing negative that i have found is the micro-SD slot cover could have been designed a bit better...once used, it sticks out a bit, not completely flush with the side of the tablet.

Other Thoughts: Currently, hard to find accessories (case w/keyboard) designed for this tablet, unless you want to go for a generic/universal type.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: SAMSUNG Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 Quad Core 2GB Memory 16GB 10.1" 2560 x 1600 Touchscreen Tablet Android 4.4 (KitKat)

Pros: Responsive, beautiful screen, lightweight. Build quality appears high. Big fan of Samsung products

Cons: Not enough cash to buy the thing

Other Thoughts: Spent over 30 minutes evaluating it in a big box store with a samsung rep. Coming from a Galaxy phone, everything is very familiar. The screen is the best I've seen. Very light weight for it's size. The size is perfect for consuming media as well. Wife has Ipad, I want one of these. Been researching tablets since last month and this one is the best one for me for the price.
