Still comes with XP - hallelujah!
- Pros: After milking an Inspiron for five years, I upgraded now so I could get something that still came with XP factory installed. The ThinkPad is designed for business use, and although I'm a personal user, I'm finding its many unique features very helpful. It seems to be designed with user-friendliness as its main goal.
The ThinkVantage and Lenovo Care software that comes on the machine has dozens of great utilities, and I'm infatuated with the fingerprint scanner.
This notebook seems fairly light for its size (but I'm used to a 9-pound Dell), and it was mostly a breeze to get set up.
I've been running off battery power after a full charge, and I'm over two hours so far, with 50% still remaining. Battery life looks to be good, definitely adequate for my needs.
This notebook has an attractive, classic, no-frills design, not like those gaudy HPs and Dells I see in stores. If I wanted attention I'd cut my hair or something, not buy a purple laptop.
Early verdict: LOVE it!
- Cons: Windows Installer was corrupted right out of the box, and I couldn't get through installing anything or completing Auto Updates until I'd downloaded and reinstalled the most recent version of Installer. Not a huge issue, but for some users that might present a problem.
Built for business use, the system is refreshingly free of the pre-loaded crapware that most home computers come with nowadays (AOL...). It did come with McAfee tucked away inside, but I guess technically that's not total junk. There wasn't an easy uninstall for McAfee, so I had to go hunting through program files to find and delete it (I run ESET NOD32).
The shiny black finish on the lid is pretty, but catches fingerprints and smudges very easily. I'm sure it will also scratch easily. Oh well, even scratched and smudged, it's still a good-looking laptop.
The clit mouse in the keyboard is annoying. (Does anyone really use those anymore?) I keep bumping it when I type, but I'm sure I'll get used to it in time.
- Other Thoughts: If you'll be using this at home a lot like me, definitely spring for the port replicator, too. It's well worth it to be able to hot dock all your peripherals through one USB port.
- Pros: Available with XP Pro. Has a nonglare screen which is important if using in a room with flourescent lights. Keyboard is firm with no flex at my usual amount of pressure. Upgradable to 4 gigs ram if needed in future, altho obviously little need at this point if running xp pro. DVD burner has solid feel, fairly quiet when compared to others. Much less crapware than most proprietary machines. The diagnostic software to monitor the hardware is actually helpful. Touchpad is very responsive. 4 usb slots. runs much cooler than my other laptop, which has a 2.2 gig AMD proc. , very little heat from this machine. Included DVD burning program looks easy and intuitive. Battery life looks good initially. Kensington lock position looks OK. Weight is similar to most machines of this type. Good power for the money.
- Cons: The restore disks are for vista - there are no xp restore disks. Used Acronis 11 to make backup disks, would recommend using Acronis manual option for 1 click install and adding the Acronis software in the options if backing up to DVDs. External hard drive obviously much easier. Had to uninstall McAfee. Speakers are quite tinny; this is probably not a good choice for laptop if selecting laptop to listen to high quality music on speakers.
- Other Thoughts: This is my 2nd Lenovo. 1st was a T61, also very pleased. Cannot emphasize the nonglare screen enough if using with light in your background. Would like to see NEWEGG offer additional battery as a purchase option. Getting a 2nd battery from Lenovo takes a long time - extended life battery for the T61 was about 8 weeks. Be sure to write down xp pro installation key for future reference (use Belarc Advisor). Delivery was prompt and timely from NEWEGG, as always.

Excellent
- Pros: Comes with Windows XP, nice processor, Vista upgrade, 2 gigs RAM. I've used it for a while now and I love it. I have had no trouble with it at all. It comes with all OS software for both operating systems in the even that you lose the hard drive with the pre-install partition

Great Laptop
- Pros: I ordered this with my boss to replace his old IBM. It runs fast and the finger ID is great for security.
- Cons: none
- Other Thoughts: It took a little getting used to with the wide screen, but we like it.
