4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Light, fast, good price, quiet and runs cool. I had it with Dell, and I decided to try Lenovo because my repairman said ThinkPads were built the best. So far so good.

Cons: Some terrible user interface decisions. The Fn key is at the lower left, where just about all other keyboards have Ctl. This slows me down tremendously. The USB ports are on both sides, at the front, which gets in the way of mouse usage in a small space (I always use a mouse, the touchpad is just way too slow and inaccurate, no matter how much I practice). The Home and End keys don't exist, you need to use a Fn key combination. I've had two other laptops, and none of them had the above limitations. If this ends up being reliable, the above objections will end up being tolerated, if not entirely tolerable.

Other Thoughts: I miss the old screen format. New laptops are all going for wide screens, as if the only thing we do is watch tv and movies (I never do either one on a computer, and have no desire to). For working with content (i.e. writing), tall and narrow is much better. It's hard to find a laptop screen with enough lines of resolution.

1 out of 5 eggsNice laptop, terrible hard drive.

Pros: Pretty zippy, comes with XP Pro, runs great when it works.

Cons: Purchased 5 of these, had 3 die within one week, all with dead Seagate hard drives. Hoping the other 2 hold out until the replacement drives arrive. I also purchased one of these about 4 months ago, it is still working fine, so it must be a bad lot of drives. Thanks Seagate!

4 out of 5 eggsMore than adequate for home office

Pros: I found this machine easy to set up, with all the functionality I need for various business and music publishing software.

Cons: The only major problem is that the only audio output port -- the headphone jack -- is on the front of the machine. That means that if you want to plug in better speakers than the not-so-hot onboard ones, you have a jack sticking out into your face and impeding your use of the track pad.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Value!

Pros: Low price, XP Pro with all necessary drivers loaded for out of box functionality, Wireless Adapter functions well (someone posted this as negative, they may have just needed to boost their antenna signal, mine worked great), touchpad worked fine, solid performance for a lower grade laptop.

Cons: No major flaws.

Other Thoughts: The touch pad came disabled on arrival, do not panic. There is a button at the top right of the keyboard near the volume controls. This gives the ability to enable/disable the touch pad without having to go into the Control Panel. Some people see this as a design flaw, I see it as smart device management with less fiddling in the OS.

3 out of 5 eggsWireless is weak

Pros: Decent laptop for the money, has XP Pro instead of Vista. Has both the eraser and touchpad.

Cons: The wireless adapter is so weak I had to put the laptop in the same room as the Cisco WAP to get any sort of connection. I ended up adding an external USB wireless adapter - so plan on spending extra $$ to get decent wireless

Other Thoughts: I think I may get another brand with Vista home in the same price range and install Linux on it instead of buying another one of these. I'd rather have employees using anything but Vista, and the weak wireless is annoying.

4 out of 5 eggsIt COMES WITH XP PRELOADED

Pros: I already wrote review but forgot to mention that the reviewer that titled his review "It comes with Vista" and claimed high computer knowledge, obviously never turned the notebook on! YES and if you read original description it says it IS VISTA but comes with XP PRO loaded but you can roll back to VISTA ! GEEZ ! YEs the sticker is there, but did he even turn the notebook on to find out that XP IS THERE PRELOADED !! GEEZ ! COME ON. DON"T claim High knowledge and mislead folks ! Review should be removed for totally false information.

Cons: Same as before -- minor design flaws that one needs to learn about from other users as manual doesn't help with much.

Other Thoughts: Remove the review that gives 1 egg as it is totally misleading people by a careless reviewer. Info should at least be factual -- even if you disagree with other aspects of a computer.

4 out of 5 eggsLenovo 3000 N Series Review

Pros: Nice size, great that comes with XP installed and with the specs it has VERY nice. Hard to find such specs with XP these days ... at least not for this price. WE need the XP for some Legacy equipment & software that only supports XP, and of course Vista is a pain at times. Screen resolution is beautiful and BIG. It's fast and solid build...much like old ThinkPads we learned to love -- not sure it could survive the drops on cement floors our old TP's took though. All in all, a lot of bang for the buck! Highly recommend.

Cons: The CONS are obvious and have been referred to in previous reviews. Yes, an unfortunate design flaw is that some of the buttons don't light up when they should and are hard to find. Most notably: 1. THe touchpad enable/disable key comes with default disabled !!! That was dumb idea! AND it's hard to spot - even in full light and a magnifying glass! If you get one just go back and read these reviews to find that it can be enabled by pressing on right most recessed button in row of 4 buttons in upper right corner of KB! It only takes once to learn this, but it is hard to find in manual too. 2. Same thing for CAPS key -- it is counter intuitively linked to 4 hard to see status indicators on right side of KB (and CAPS Key does have corresponding icon right on it, so that helps). BUt it was a pain when setting up and wanting to enter Administrator pw and couldn't tell if in CAPS or not and NO help in the manual. 3. Which leads to manual being poorly document for some basic info.

Other Thoughts: All in all, once you get over the intitial design flaws it's a lot of notebook for the money and XP PRO. SO don't let the design flaws dissuade you!

1 out of 5 eggsIt came with Vista!!!

Pros: A lot of laptop for the price...

Cons: VISTA!!!! I chose this model due to the advertized XP installed. And it came with Vista...

Other Thoughts: I would not have ordered this if I thought there would be a chance Vista would have been installed. It clearly said it came with XP. There is a "Vista Home Basic" sticker on back... that's not cool!

5 out of 5 eggsTouchpad Does Work!!

Pros: Laptop is fast and energy efficient. Plus it comes with XP instead of Vista.

Cons: DESIGN FLAW: The touchpad has a disable button located at the top right of the keyboard. It looks just like an indicator light and it's hard to tell it's a button. Because of this, some people have thought the touchpads are defective. They work properly.

Other Thoughts: I repeat, the touchpad works perfectly. Make sure your disable button in the top right corner, above the keyboard, is turned off. The light does not stay on even when the touchpad is turned off. Aside from this little, yet confusing, design flaw the laptop works great. Highly recommended for the price.

2 out of 5 eggsWhat Happened Lenovo?

Pros: The laptop came installed with XP Pro. That's a plus for anyone who has dealt with the woes of Vista.

Cons: A tad bit more than I wanted to pay for a laptop, but was worth it to have XP Loaded and ready to go without having to do a downgrade.

However, we've had the laptop for 3 weeks and the touchpad has stopped working. I ask myself, what happened to Lenovo? They used to be a great product. They still have the higher price tag, but the quality has been downgraded.

Other Thoughts: If I had this to do over, I would get an Acer for much less and downgrade to XP. Sure it's a little more work, but I've had numerous Acers and have worked on many of them. They are well built machines. For the money, they can't be beaten in my opinion.
