IBM hasn't failed me yet
- Pros: * Straightforward
* Simple and underrated look * Does what it is supposed to do * Defines the virtues and characteristics of a "true laptop" * Not slow or laggy
- Cons: N/A, unless you are going to hook this laptop up to a mega-church's video system of 15 to 30 meters of VGA cabling that splits to two projectors -- doing something like this would put a heavy strain on the video accelerator/central processing unit (CPU) and you would notice very noticeable and ugly latency between audio and video, or extreme video chugging, or unsynchronized chugging of audio and video (depends on whether you are using Nero Vision, Winamp/Windows Media Player, or MPlayer respectively).
- Other Thoughts: Mom sponsored me $500 to buy a laptop and I chose to look for an IBM laptop because of the history and experience I have with using the older laptops. IBM makes their products with high quality craftsmanship, durability and reliability. The government also purchases from IBM to get much of their laptops, computers and servers.
Unless you intend to use this laptop for a scenario like the one I mentioned in the cons, you shouldn't have any problems with this laptop. Your average computer user does not need a notebook more powerful than this, unless they are gamers or developers (for which they would not be average users).
I highly recommend this laptop! =D IBM hasn't failed me yet.
Good Buy
- Pros: Works well with Linux (PCLinuxOS) - All components I've tested are compatible, including the built-in webcam.
Solidly built, fast enough dual core 64 bit CPU, plenty of RAM, plenty of HD, good display, inexpensive
- Cons: No HDMI, No FireWire, No eSATA, No Bluetooth - None of these are deal breakers. HDMI is preferable in some cases to the VGA port it does have but VGA is still more common and it *IS* a *mobile* device. Those who want FireWire probably already have a Mac but USB -> FireWire converters for PCMCIA slots are easy enough to come by (get one here on Newegg). Same with eSATA (though you'd lose the transfer speed of eSATA). Same for Bluetooth USB dongles. As low as 10 bucks here on Newegg.
All ports are on the sides of the device, none in the rear. The USB device connected to the same side which you are using an external mouse, instead of the touch-pad, the USB device may get in your way.
- Other Thoughts: Audio is mediocre, neither good nor awful - use headphones or a dedicated music device if you are an audiophile.
Webcam is also mediocre - good enough for home/mobile web conferencing but don't shoot movies with it; but that's the trade off for a fish-eye on the top edge of the screen.
If you're not a mobile gamer and your preferred data transfer method is WiFi or USB, then this lappy is definitely what you want.
Solid Laptop
- Pros: great, solid laptop. Doesn't come with a lot of annoying software. Great display and no dead pixels.
- Cons: Battery Life. Battery only lasts about 2 hours, and the volume control is a little annoying.
- Other Thoughts: It's a great laptop for the price. I'm using it for college and it works great.
