Rugged, good laptop
- Pros: -----1. The first impression of the laptop is very nice. Matte looking finish on the cover, satin finish on the keys and the surface, and the general presentation was very nice
-----2. HDMI support - this was a key feature that I as looking for - I bought a HDMI monitor as well
-----3. I bought the 250GB hard drive version. They gave me 254GB, excluding the Lenovo drive (29GB), which includes all the laptop's hardware/software information. Usually, they give you a lot less than what they said they'll give you
-----4. Battery life is average. They say that it'll last you 4 hours, but mine lasts 3 hours max
-----5. And, oh, CHEAP PRICE! I bought mine for $540, since I bought the 3GB memory and 250GB hard drive. version
- Cons: -----1. The first thing that bugged me was the set up of the "Fn Key." This one's on the far left. I have not been used to this ever since I ever bought the laptop
-----2. Speakers are weak. Very weak. Sometimes I cannot hear a thing without using headphones
-----3. The Desktop Manager's music touch keys - the lighted touch keys on the top - do not work with iTunes or Zune 4.0. They only work with Window Media Player. And to be honest, I'd rather have pushable keys than touch sensitive keys
-----4. Most of the pre-installed Lenovo softwares do not work very well. For example - Lenovo's ReadyCOMM 4.0 (Lenovo's internet connectivity software) is laggy and basically replaces Vista's internet center, all the while being frustrating and unnecessary
-----5. Track pad is... hard to get used to. Even after almost a year, I cannot tell the difference between the laptop surface and the track pad (they are made of the same material)
- Other Thoughts: The only thing I can complain I guess is the hardwares.
I can't review Windows Vista because that's Windows Vista's review, not the Lenovo Y530. That wouldn't be fair.
However, the laptop's physical set up of the laptop is average/good.
Perfect Laptop for me !
- Pros: Currently me n my wife r in deep Love with our Y530 that we bought in July 09. Everything works PERFECT except I haven't figured out how to get the HDMI out port to
function with my TV which has S-video. Overall a gr8 laptop. No major issues/complain so far except one i've mentioned below. I feel lucky that i bought this one with much lower price for these specifications, as currently it got increased much.I keep checking back here for that lower price, in case I might grab another one for my relatives. I m sound system lover so this one with Dolby home theater system is at its best.
Also regarding Windows Vista complains, after updating it to latest version i personally dont see any problems. Liked One Key Recovery feature. I m keeping most my data's in external drive so no complain for partition sizes its comes with.
- Cons: 1) After few weeks of ownership, i found that functions (sleep-hibernate etc) that we do normally by closing lid ,stopped working.I got upset for a week bcoz i paid full price. After performing all kind of experiments, finally i had to sent it to Lenovo repair depot where they found that Lid itself is faulty and magnet that work for this purpose is not in right position. So they replaced my laptop's lid, adjusted magnet position and its working fine now. Then after No problem so far.
2) I owned few basic programs Microsoft office suites, Adobe etc. So no problem with me. This one comes with no such preinstalled programs so new users have to purchase them all.
3) Nonrefundable
4) Wish Newegg would have given FREE Window 7 upgrade eligibility. At that time many other sellers were offering it. I guess they bought it in bulk in past so they could not give u for free !
- Other Thoughts: Vista updated runs very well, so no more worry abt Vista complaints u see online.
Norton never worked well for me in past so i've replaced it with McAfee. Also Lenovo forums helps a lot in case of any problems and questions.
Very nice Machine
- Pros: Love my Y530. Everything works except I haven't figured out how to get the HDMI out port to function with projector. Overall a great laptop, very fast, nice screen, good wireless range, very happy. On the complaints about vista, I agree for the version installed, however, updating the large service packs as of about 9/2009 seems to have solved most bugs. Earlier I had to use the one-touch restore because Vista completely died and wouldn't boot... pretty nice feature even though people complain it takes up a chunk of the drive for the restore partition. The incremental backup software that comes on that same partition is very nice. Using it with a 1TB USB drive to backup a restore point for the entire drive with OS & Data - exact total backup with incrementals. Very nice. Also I need to ghost the restore partition and layout in case the entire drive craps out- not just Vista.
- Cons: Best sound I've ever had from a laptop but still the subwoofer is weak and it is'nt going to beat plugging in to amplified speakers. Other people have complained about the rubber tabs over your wrists - they could have put those in the cover instead of the part you touch. Slicing them off with a razor blade solves the problem. I detest touchpads and this on is no exception but being portable you can't always use a mouse anyway... would personally rather have the old thinkpad mini-joystick in the keyboard between the g and h keys but most people don't like those i guess. Also I sacked windows media player and would like better driver support for the multi-media hot keys and reassigning them to work with K-Lite Media Player Classic instead of WMP.
It's not the lightest laptop but my eyesight isn't good enough for a netbook so I'm very happy.
- Other Thoughts: Vista updated runs well. Using VMWare I'm running Centos5 and feels like it is native on the hardware.
Price was cheaper on this when I bought it in July. I kept checking back here in case I might grab another one for my wife but now they raised price a bit.
