Hard drive died in less than a year

Pros: Great laptop. Love the screen width and hardware setup. It is plenty fast enough for a normal user, (Work/School).

Cons: Hard drive died after 9 months. Sent back for a replacement, (which was fast) and hopefully this one will last.

Pros: + Usual high quality Lenovo form factor design & fabrication
+ Usual high quality Lenovo physical durability
+ Good touch pad
+ Better than average built-in speakers
+ Four USB ports (three is more common at this price point)
+ The Pentium T4200 performs adequately (I feared it may not)
+ Cooling exceeds expectations. Fan mostly off under regular use and common ambient temps (65-75 F), case stays remarkably cool to touch. This is a very pleasant surprise.
+ Access to hard drive is deadsimple. Upgrades to a 7200 RPM drive or solid state storage can be easily performed by anyone with general drive handling knowledge.
+ Keyboard keys have a nicely curved/lipped contour, large & high contrast markings which is helpful under low-light conditions (function keys excepted). See the KB negative in below list of Cons.

Cons: My Cons are limited to negatives unexpected prior to purchase and reflected in the 4-star rating. Negatives in 'Other Thoughts' section below do not affect rating.

- Shiny reflective screen. Aids in cleaning but an annoyance under certain lighting conditions.
- More installed junk apps/promos than one should ever be subjected to. Of course this lowers purchase price but brace yourself for more time than usual to uninstall the mess. Be aware most of the junk will reappear if Lenovo's restore feature is used (on hidden partition). Recommend reliance on some other backup/restore tool.
- Keys require a hard-touch to assure they register. Probably aids in switch durability but light-touch typists will be disappointed. See KB plusses in above list of Pros.

Other Thoughts: * Linux-ready. A major consideration for me. Most laptops require major fiddling to get all hardware working.

* Face recognition software is enabled to login. Fortunately it's easy to disabled whilst retaining Explorer context menu option to lock individual directories.

* Battery life is not great. Specs show it so no surprise. Not an issue in my usage, others will want better. Haven't eval'd under linux.

* Vista Home Basic = no upgrade to Win7. This would have been a deal killer if I didn't already have an Win7 license. Plans are dualboot of Win7 & Ubuntu Desktop Ed.. Win7 not yet installed.

* No HDMI port. At time of purchase I could not locate a laptop of similar quality, price point, and of desired functionality that did include HDMI. By the time you read this options may well have improved as HDMI is rapidly becoming ubiquitous.

* Over all I am very pleased. Principle reason for (reluctant) demotion to 4stars is the shiny screen. Matt option may exist; I have not

Pros: good looking design. i like the matte black instead of the glossy black. i like the heavier feel. i like the smaller keyboard and the feel of the keys. got it at another place on sale for 350 after tax.

Cons: the mouse is flaky. it does not move smoothly around the screen. when you scroll with it the scroll bar does not move smoothly but it spurts. its just the way the mouse works. sampling rate or something. next the screen. you can see the meshing in the screen. its like looking through a screen door. lastly all the ports are forward on this laptop. kind of awkward plugging stuff up front rather than in the back and out of the way.

Other Thoughts: i just figured a laptop should get the screen and mouse right. if all you care about is size of screen and that you can see stuff on it and that you can point and click at stuff - then this will work. but what laptop doesnt do such?
