3 out of 5 eggsDescent laptop, but too many pre-installed apps (and it doesn't come with system CD)

Pros: The laptop itself is ok.

Cons: This laptop has some issues with certain wireless network routers (google it and you'll find it has some weird incompatibilities). Some blame certain types of routers (D-Link) and some blame the pre-installed software Lenovo put on it. I think it's both.

Other Thoughts: Lenovo laptops come with far too many pre-installed applications. So I wanted to wipe out the laptop on day 1 and re-install the OS but Lenovo doesn't ship the CD with the laptop. So I had to call and request it, and they charged me $10 to ship me the Windows 7 CD.

5 out of 5 eggsUpdating my old review

Pros: I am correcting my earlier review on March 15th, entitled Can't access internet. Blushing, but every time I tried to access, I got Error 651 or was told to use ethernet cable and I did not have an ethernet port for my old desktop so I just got befuddled. 200 people on other forums had this Error 651, I stayed befuddled but finally plugged in the ethernet cable and voila'. Otherwise I love this laptop more and more, I've not had a chance to use but one other laptop. I think I might have liked a non-wide screen but I don't know. I love Windows 7, the screen, the machine runs on battery for at least 3 or more hours so I don't have to watch that constantly. ..... NOW, for all those who have trouble with the keyboard vs. touchpad, Lenovo's little skimpy manual does note that one can enable/disable that with the keys fn+F8. I said that on March 15th too. Now we know that males don't read manuals! LOL
It's a pain though, I wish that they had provided a toggle switch.

Cons: I can't think of anything dire at this time. I'm getting used to Windows 7 etc. I like the texture of the case. I got this on NewEgg's very good deal in early March, for $450.

Other Thoughts: Again, trouble with the keyboard vs. touchpad, Lenovo's manual notes that one can enable/disable that with the keys fn+F8.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat for the Price, but not without issues.

Pros: First of all, the value for the price is absolutely extraordinary, I have not been able to find a laptop under $500 that I would rather have than this one. The G550 is fast, lightweight, and the built in number pad is a great addition to an already solid and responsive keyboard. When running a 64bit OS it runs quickly and reliably, however there are some problems, see Cons.

Cons: The biggest problem that this laptop has is the touch pad. It is located partially under the left hand when typing, so the mouse can jump around the screen unexpectedly. When you try to use it, its responsiveness ranges from non-existent, to mediocre, and using a mouse will save you a lot of head aches.

Other Thoughts: Overall the Pros vastly outweigh the Cons, however this laptop is not quite as user friendly as it could have been. The only things that could really have been improved upon are the touch pad and the OS. The OS is an easy fix, the touch pad, not so much.

3 out of 5 eggsPlagued by annoying problems

Pros: Price.
Decent overall performance, excluding graphics.

Cons: Awful keyboard and touchpad. The cursor often relocates by itself, while typing and dragging. The touchpad surface is polished, which makes it difficult to use.
The keyboard is cheap and irritating- many times, if you press a button, nothing happens( the spacebar is the worst).
The display's angles of view don't even worth a comment.
The microphone is practically useless.
The camera is a joke.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Nickel Cigar in America !!!

Pros: Just about everything is great about this Laptop, as well as the G530. We have purchased or "influenced" about 10 of these so far, for ourselves, family and friends. You CAN imporove on a couple of areas from what Lenovo provides us, but not for anywhere NEAR the low cost of these units. The G550's have cost us as low as $399 up to $450, and the G530's have cost us as low as $349. Their overall functionality is superb. Virtually all of the units have been rebuilt by me into Windows XP systems, and at that point, THEY FLY ! That's one of the best things aboutr Lenovo, who is not "tied" into Microsoft like so many other manufacturers. Go to their website and you'll find drivers for XP, Vista (Yuck!), and Windows 7. Kudos to Lenovo for thinking clearly about their customers first !@

And the screen is Bright and Sharp and EASY to use !

Cons: Really none. We love the case, our displays do NOT seem "flimsy, nor do our cases "bend." And the DVD player/burner appears to work well and is rock-solid in construction.

I guess our only knock is we did not get it for Free after Rebate.

Other Thoughts: While the keyboard COULD be a little better, not for anywhere near the low costr of these units. We HAVE (since we all use an external Logitech V220 external mouse (and this little buggar FLIES) taped a small piece of white paper OVER the mouse pad area, and this seems to have mitigated the "touchiness" of the keyboard to make the cursor "fly" all over the place while typing.

5 out of 5 eggsWell worth the price

Pros: Bought this laptop when it was on sale with free shipping. Great specs for the price. Boots quickly and seems pretty chipper during basic use. Screen is nice and bright. I like the matte finish on the top. Was able to get the restore disks for free from Lenovo (although I couldn't get the 64-bit disk without and additional fee of $50 according to the support guy).

Cons: Feels a bit light in the casing overall although I wouldn't call it flimsy. Touchpad a little wonky, but not that bad. No SD card slot. No bluetooth.

Other Thoughts: I loaded Linux Mint on this thing when I got it and most everything worked right out of the gate with the exception of the screen brightness function keys (took care of that by using the Gnome brightness manager applet)

5 out of 5 eggsLove it

Pros: Fast, good quality, screen is clear and bright, keyboard is great, sound is great as well. Battery life is great.

Cons: Lacks 802.11N and a 1GB NIC, but a Rosewill 80211N USB adapter makes up for it.

Also lacks an ExpressCard slot, but for the price you can't complain.

The screen is a little wobbly when tapped or bumped, but not a big deal.

Other Thoughts: Bought this when Newegg had it on sale for $450. Works great. The installed Windows 7 Home 32bit ran fine, but does seem to run a little faster. The touchpad is a little touchy and takes some getting used to. Once I updated the driver, it was like night and day...much better.
