4 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop for the $$$!

Pros: Very nice laptop for the money. 4 gigs of RAM and Nvidia graphics make it pretty fast. Nice large screen for watching video or playing games. Love the lightscribe DVD burner too.

Cons: Vista..ARGH!!! Plus, it's the 64 bit version which makes it worse. Do yourself a favor and wipe it and put XP or Linux on it.

Other Thoughts: I spent 7 hours wiping it and putting XP back on it. The problem is that HP's website is awful and only shows a few drivers for XP. They do exist but you really have to dig for them. I finally did the live chat but the links he sent me only worked for half of the drivers. In the forums a woman named Cheryl G really knows her stuff. Look for her solutions.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing...

Pros: Desktop-like speed and reliability
Large hard drive
Huge screen
Full keyboard w/ plenty of room
Touch media buttons
Solid/sturdy
Wireless N capable
Built in webcam
Built in stereo mic w/ noise reduction software

Cons: A little on the heavy side
Gets a little hot, but not any hotter than other laptops I have owned.

Other Thoughts: I dual boot ubuntu 8.x (Linux distro), but I think Windows Vista is a great OS. Going from XP to Vista is alot better than it was going from 98 to XP. Keep Vista, it is great.

This is the best laptop I have ever bought. I bought it when it was $849 about 2 weeks ago.

5 out of 5 eggsA++ would overwrite Vista again

Pros: Fast. Dual core. Big screen. Appears to be well-designed.

Cons: It came with Vista.

Other Thoughts: First boot on this thing was to an Ubuntu 8.04 amd64 install disc to wipe out Vista and get a usable OS on it. Since then it's been working absolutely perfectly*. If the price hadn't just gone up I might have grabbed another.

* note I do not currently have a wireless router, others indicate ndiswrapper is needed for the wireless adapter to work

5 out of 5 eggsBuy it, ditch Vista

Pros: This machine is extremely powerful, but in case you've missed the news, Vista is absolute garbage. It abuses the ample resources this machine provides you with. Just being on the desktop with no programs running in 64bit Vista takes 1.25 Gb of RAM. That is obscene. Booting takes almost 3 minutes from power on to reaching the desktop in Vista. Do yourself a favor and install linux on this box. I have Debian on mine, and it flies. A browser with 5 tabs, terminal with 3, and and email client takes only 500 Mb of RAM, leaving 3.5 Gb for better use.

Cons: The wired network card doesn't have gigabit speed, and I don't like that the slot is in upside down. Trying to take a network cable out when it is on a desktop is impossible. It is heavy by laptop standards, and does get warm. I'm extremely happy with it however. In a linux perspective, the wireless card is too new to b e covered by the b43 module, so you have to resort to ndiswrapper, but it does work that way.

Other Thoughts: Buy it, wipe it clean, install linux, and be happy!

3 out of 5 eggsOverpriced

Pros: Great Look, Nice Screen, Cool Light-Up buttons, Scroll Function on Mousepad, Decent speakers, built in webcam and mic

Cons: Overpriced, Has Severe Cooling Problems, Can't handle too much at one time, not a good computer for anything other than office work and internet, Somewhat unstable when it comes to hard drives, "Just Okay" graphical capabilities, Pre-Installed HP software causes a lot of problems

Other Thoughts: If you wanted to do anything with this computer, it would be office work. It can't handle much other than a few previous generation games and some office applications. All in all, it's not a good computer for the price.
The HP software does nothing but get on my nerves. If I'm playing a game, or watching a movie, I can't turn up the volume without a very annoying window coming up to tell me that I'm turning up my volume. You can uninstall the software but that causes even more problems, such as Windows not updating without updating HP software, which in the end just reinstalls the software you uninstalled. If you choose not to install it, you get messages from HP saying that you have uninstalled their programs. And those messages on top of the Windows Vista messages just get to be a big problem that eats the system alive. This is a very unstable computer for its price. You can save a lot of money and get a much better computer for two-thirds of the price.
