3 out of 5 eggsHP dv9810us/dv9700 Disappointment

Pros: I love the 17" screen and remote control for watching DVD movies. I actually got it for a good price from Fry's. It was my first and only laptop to date. For the most part I didn't have too many problems over the last 4 years except for it overheating frequently but I didn't push this one to the limits (other than leaving it running all the time) like I did the desktop that I built since I'm a little intimidated by the thought of tearing a laptop apart whereas I'm ok with tearing down a desktop to do hardware repairs if needed.

Cons: It could use more RAM since the name "Entertainment PC" is misleading. It's slow to boot up. You'd expect to do more than it allows without running out of resources. I do a lot of research, photo/video editing and it can't handle games or the 3D feature in Photoshop. It freezes/closes Photoshops when I try to use 3D. Sometimes many open browser windows/tabs causes overheating. I've had the intermittent overheating problem since it was new & even when I'm running only a few small programs. I purchased this laptop as a dv9700 Entertainment PC and that's what it reads in my System Properties but the HP Scan AND the Service Tag on the bottom indicate it's a dv9810us. HP Support said it was an imaging problem. Computer models should be represented correctly so there's no potential problem of installing incorrect drivers. The Sound Card and Modem have failed. Restore factory settings failed because it doesn't see the hardware. I'm very disappointed.

Other Thoughts: I've read where many others had the same overheating and Sound Card issues. Many said the Sound Card issue was caused by the QuickTouch On Screen Display program and that seemed to have been where my problems started. The QTOSD failed and I lost my sound and modem after it (QuickTouch) failed. System Manager restored the QTOSD but the sound card and modem were no longer detectable so Recovery Mgr won't reinstall the drivers for the sound and modem hardware. I haven't researched the Modem issue yet but I suspect it was caused by the same problem with the QuickTouch On Screen Display issue. I can manage for now without an internal dialup modem but I think it's time to do a full backup of my data before this computer completely fails me. The display is starting to show dull colors when watching movies. I suppose that's to be expected over time. I'm very disappointed about the other issues. I will definitely take time to read reviews before purchasing my next PC instead of trusting HP.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat machine.

Pros: Great system. Could use another GB of RAM, which I plan to purchase sometime in the near future. I was able to downgrade from Vista to XP with support from HP, then upgrade to Vista Ultimate when I purchased my copy of the OS with no trouble.

Cons: Base RAM could be higher, video card is good, but not great.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat 17" laptop for the $$

Pros: Great performance for the money
Stylish look and feel

Cons: I wish the outside didn't have such a glossy finish because fingerprints are inevitable and I can be obsessive about that kind of thing.

5 out of 5 eggsSweet

Pros: Great for the money. This computers comes installed with a lot of bloatware. I reformatted the computer and now it flies. Vista is not so bad if you make it look like XP (which are just some settings).

Cons: It does not handle games well, but I dont think it was built for gaming.

Other Thoughts: If you do your research, you can figure out how to reformat your HP without any official Microsoft discs at all and you can delete that stupid recovery partition. If you want to figure out how to do that I would suggest you start at
