Another Great Buy from HP
- Pros: First, I'd like to start with the keyboard. HP was able to fit this model with a number pad which is really useful for me. The buttons are easy to type with and aren't as hard to push as some other laptops. The hard drive is big enough for just about any use. Even if it is not big enough for you, this laptop provides you with an extra hard drive bay in case you want to install a second drive. The easy access buttons are touch sensitive and only need a tap of the finger. I haven't had a chance to give the graphics card much of a workout but it seems good to me. USB ports on both sides ensure you always have one where you need it. The screen is bright and colorful, in fact it was so bright I had to turn the settings down a little. The buttons on the touch pad are also easy to press, and the pad has a button at the top that can shut it off while you type, which works really well so you don't inadvertently move or click the mouse while you type...or spill something on it ;)
- Cons: The biggest problem I have experienced is the OSD freezing Firefox when I adjust the volume with the easy access buttons. I solved this problem by removing the HP Quicktouch Onscreen Display (HPKBDAPP.exe) program from the startup list. It takes away the OSD but at least it still makes the click noise when you use the buttons. I plan on leaving it this way until HP releases a fix. The buttons on the touch pad are too close to the pad. Sometimes I will rest my thumb on the button as I move the cursor and if my thumb touches the edge of the pad as I move the cursor, it results in unpredicted movement of the cursor. I've also figured out that I have the habit of resting my left hand above the keyboard when I'm not using it. This causes the HP Quickplay application to start and is quite a distraction.
- Other Thoughts: Over all, this machine has no hardware issues that I can see and seems to be rigidly built for having such a large screen. It also comes with so many options that it is quite a challenge to use them all. Regardless of the problems I've had, I gave it 5 eggs. Most are problems that not all users will experience and I am not going to let one buggy OSD program bring my rating down. I recommend this laptop to anyone looking for a great media center that is also portable. I haven't been able to test it with any high-end games but looking at the setup this machine has to offer, I'm sure it can handle it.
AWESOME!!!!!!
- Pros: Before I start here is a little story, my desktop computer I built(most parts came from newegg) decided to quit on me and I just dont have the time to troubleshoot it with school going on, had to look for a computer as quickly as I could, and knew i had wanted a laptop so I started to search for laptops. Came across this laptop which was listed as $999.99 with $50 mail in rebate. So I had this next day'ed for $47 came out to 1047.17....definetely not bad for a laptop with this much specs. This one = best bang for the buck.
-Screen is big and perfect -Audio is good for a laptop... --Keyboard: The only thing that bothers me is that the right shift button is the same size as the other keys, but ill get use to it
-No payments until november 2009!!!!
BUY THIS LAPTOP!!!!!!!! I absolutely love it and it plays movies and games perfectly
COD4 - runs real good CSS - 50-80fps It keeps up with how good my built computer played...well it holds up its own thats for sure
- Cons: -Vista x64..not a fan of vista but im actually liking it with the widgets and what not,. It does have SOME bugs but i havent came across any that couldnt be fixed.
-Keyboard: The only thing that bothers me is that the right shift button is the same size as the other keys, but ill get use to it
-Bloatware - Compared to most retail ones..this didnt have as much as most people would thing...granted it sucks to have it but seriously..this laptop was easily cleaned of the stuff that I didnt want in 30 minutes
- Other Thoughts: If I wasnt a broke college student then I would probably have purchased one more...one for my apartment w/ a docking station and one for on the go..sounds dumb but Im beginning to learn how convenient laptops are now...especiall for school.
along side that, some people were complaining about the mousepad on thhe laptop whatever you want to call it and how it acts up? I dont see what they are referring to....had no issues at all...i would at times accidentely put my hand on it but other than that its perfect.
-The laptop case has some fancy designs and what not on it..so its not completely black...fingerprint magnet for sure but it comes with a what seems to be heavy duty microfiber towel...works wonders
Best Laptop for the Money
- Pros: I searched for a month looking for the most features for the money and this laptop is what I came to - comparable laptops were priced $300-500 more. It's a great laptop for gaming - plays WoW fine at max settings and I haven't had any problems with any other games yet. I wish the screen resolution was a bit better but since this is a pre-packaged non-customizable laptop getting that change means you must go with a customizable version and the price increases quite a bit. The extra features such as a TV tuner were a nice plus, though I don't really use them. What sold me on this was having a nice 4gig's of RAM with the x64 OS and a 512 meg dedicated vid card. This laptop is definitely quite the deal.
- Cons: The NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS was recalled by NVIDIA sometime around April-June 2008. I called HP Tech Support about this and they gave me the manufacturer's date on the laptop and assured me that the batch my video card was taken from was not recalled. Now, there is no way of knowing for sure other than trusting HP, but it's been 2 months since I bought this laptop and I've had no problems so far. I bought the 4 year warranty just in case.
The volume touch pad buttons freeze up WoW, Firefox, and a few other programs. HP really needs to patch this. I just use Windows to adjust the volume so it's avoidable.
My last problem with it is the incredibly tiny right side shift key. They had to make it the size of a normal key to fit the arrow buttons in. After 2 months I still haven't gotten used to it.
- Other Thoughts: This laptop also comes with a lot of preinstalled software. After I booted it up the first time before Vista loaded I got a software installation screen which I could not bypass. After 1 hour of installing HP's software it took me 3 hours uninstalling it. Of course, on any Dell, Toshiba, etc you would get this problem too.
I bought the combo package for the cooling device. I would say for such a large laptop with a possible but unlikely video card problem it is a solid investment. Touching the base of the laptop while it is with the cooling device is warm but not hot - which is good.
