1 out of 5 eggsIt's a junk laptop

Pros: Remote included, crisp screen, beautiful case.

Cons: Keys hard to read, overheated and went into thermal shutdown while watching movies, which is part of what I bought it for, overheated doing almost anything. HP support was less than helpful.

Other Thoughts: Avoid HP products. I have had two printers and a laptop made by them, and all either fail or have major design/engineering flaws with them. The experience with this laptop sealed the deal for me, I will never be buying an HP product again.

3 out of 5 eggsDecent Desktop Replacement

Pros: Notebook feels solid. Keyboard is full size and responsive. Volume control is convenient. Speakers are ok. Bright display.

Cons: Keys are difficult to read. Color and gloss finish is annoying. No protective travel case. Bloatware. No Windows installation CD.

Other Thoughts: I read all the reviews of this notebook before I purchased it. The only common complaint I can validate is that the keyboard is hard to read. The key lettering color is similar to the key base color. At some angles the key lettering is hard to see. I can usually read the keys. But at times it is annoying. Also the gloss finish of entire notebook is distracting under bright light. This is a major design flaw. I can't imagine that this case color was properly field tested.

I do not find this laptop to run especially hot. It does produce some heat. but it is similar to my previous laptop that also included a video card. I have not had any issues with heat, but I have not played 3D games. One fan vent is on the bottom of the case. I keep my notebook on a hard surface to prevent the vent from becoming blocked. I would prefer no vents on the bottom. But no design is perfect.

Overall I am satisfied with this laptop. It isn't perfect but it seems to be a reasonable value.

3 out of 5 eggsBuster: Extra Note

Pros: N/A

Cons: Panels on underside warped with the heat these laptop generates.

Keys VERY hard to see, but it does help you learn to touch type as another user said. I don't notice it too much as I rarely look at the keys. Still annoying when I do have to look at them. Poor design, I don't how on earth it went to manufacture like this. Going to contact tech support about this.

Other Thoughts: Overall, I do recommend this laptop, but think of it as more of an easily portable desktop replacement that is in serious need of better cooling.

3 out of 5 eggsGood Laptop, Runs HOT

Pros: This laptop runs great. Fast processor, great video card, plenty of ram and a crystal clear screen. Fast transfer rates on the memory card slot, I have used SD, xD, and a microSD (using adapter) and had very fast speeds on the read, faster than either of my desktops. The included remote is great, and two headphone jacks help out a lot. The wireless range is pretty good, but I have not done too many tests on the range yet. The weight is not too bad for the size. the buttons under the screen are all touch/heat sensitive, and quite sensitive. Webcam is crystal clear. Touch pad is heat sensitive instead of touch sensitive, so you don't have to press hard at all or worry about it wearing out. It can also be turned on and off at the touch of a button to prevent accidental movement. Handy when running benchmarks, watching movies, or to mess with a roommate who uses the laptop. = ) Some of the pre-loaded software is actually worth the space on the hard drive.

Cons: RUNS VERY HOT. I'm always propping my laptop up to try to keep it cool, without much luck. At home it sits on my table atop jar lids to allow better airflow so it stays a little cooler. I tried a laptop cooler, but it didn't help much. It my be poor cooling design, or a defect. Whenever I watch a video the laptop fan goes to full very quickly, and the RAM compartment is ROASTING hot after the movie. It takes around twenty minutes after the movie to cool off. Have burned myself a few times handling my laptop after a movie or gaming session. Does not take too much to heat up. RAM seems to get the hottest, but the air blowing out is also very warm. I keep my laptop dusted out, but it doesn't help much. This laptop has poor cooling. Video is choppy when playing games. Volume slider works as a slider, but doesn't work too well as a slider. Works best using the + and - at either end of the slider.

Other Thoughts: If you buy this laptop, you definitely need to buy a really good laptop cooler. Stay away from the collapsible types, they don't work well with this laptop. Game played with choppy video was Supreme Commander on Med-High detail. For comparison, my desktop with a Athlon64 X2 4600+, 3gb RAM and a GeForce 7600 (much older than this graphics card) can run it very smoothly on highest detail. The graphics could be a cooling issue, or it could be slightly defective. Not sure, but leaning towards cooling.

5 out of 5 eggsajaxx keyboard update

Pros: HP Warranty service will replace the keyboard under warranty. the notebook is a decent gamer
also. Needs a notebook cooler under it, though.

Cons: The keyboard that came with it.

Other Thoughts: I'm getting a keyboard with white lettering under waranty. HP pays shipping and was responsive to my complaint. I'm very pleased with the purchase and HP.

4 out of 5 eggsPretty good laptop

Pros: Good battery life (with 6-cell, planning on upgrading to 12-cell soon). Fast and responsive. Keyboard feels just right. Monitor is pretty good. Vista runs O.K, especially if you tweak it. I installed Ubuntu 9.04, and everything works out of the box except the audio, which I'm still working on.

Graphics card is pretty good, for a laptop. Does exactly as I want it to.

Price is excellent; definitely worth it, and when I purchased it, there was a mail-in-rebate. That made it all the sweeter

Acceptably light. Not the lightest laptop, but for the price and what it does, its great.

Amazing hard drive space for a laptop.

Cons: Can't easily install XP (i still haven't gotten it to work). I have spent over a week trying to do this, and it just doesn't work. The BIOS has the SATA AHCI feature enabled, and does not allow you to change it. I have tried slipstreaming the drivers, installing XP on a Virtual Machine, and imaging it over, etc. The CD cant even load all the way, it BSODs.

Keyboard is slightly hard to see, but since its comfortable, I can deal with it (plus, it makes you a better typer, since you cant watch your hands a lot)

Other Thoughts: For the average user, or a person who can deal with Vista, its a great machine. For me, I want to use Vista to learn how to make it run better, but not as my primary OS. Thats why i installed Ubuntu. I use Vista just to familiarize myself with it, and to watch movies (the remote is awesome). If you go down the Linux path, Ubuntu found everything fine (again, minus the audio), even the gig network card. I recommend downloading the graphics drivers, and playing with Compiz Fusion, not only is it pretty, but makes work (like school work or research) a lot easier with the multiple desktops, and the interface to switch between them. I know windows has many programs that offer a variety of window management, but the way this works, its just smooth as glass

Biggest warning is XP. At the time of this writing, I've been told a dozen times i cannot install XP on this laptop, and i've spent the time on it to prove it. If you need XP DO NOT BUY. A Virtual Machine should work, but its not the sa

5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

Pros: Nice looking, great specs, crisp screen, runs well. Best use is as a desktop replacement.

Cons: Can't read the keys unless you have really good light. See below.

Other Thoughts: I called HP after getting the laptop to see if they had a solution for the keys. Had to escalate past the T1 tech. However, they called the next morning and offered to replace the keyboard free of charge. It will take a few days, but will have a readable keyboard. Can't say enough good things about HP tech support so far. If you have this laptop and it is under warranty, you can get the keys replaced. Just get past the first level tech guy.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop!

Pros: Sleek design. Has a heat-sensitive touchpad with an on/off button. The webcam is pretty good for a laptop and the speakers and microphone work better than I had expected. Very fast setup and quick connection to my pre-existing wireless network. Great for multitasking. I've burned several cds and used lightscribe and they look great, lightscribe cds only cost a bit more than normal cds.

Cons: The battery gets pretty hot while charging, so you need to keep the area around the vents open. Also contains several useless programs that take about ten minutes to remove.

Other Thoughts: I've read alot of complaints about the keys being hard to read, but I haven't had a problem with them, even in a very low-light area. Newwgg is the best, it arrived in a day with the free shipping.
