5 out of 5 eggsMSI Wind U100

Pros: Despite its small stature, the keyboard is mostly full-size, with the exception of a few symbol keys. This takes a bit of getting used to, but nothing to complain about.
The unit is extremely lightweight and portable. It is by no means a desktop replacement ... and it doesn't feel like you're carrying around a desktop.
After setting up hundreds of computers while working at one of the "Big Blue Box" stores, I can honestly say I have never seen a laptop ship with a cleaner install of Windows. There was literally nothing installed that I would classify as "bloat."
The battery life and battery management is fantastic.
The installed hardware was immediately recognized and handled by Ubuntu 8.10 and above.

Cons: I have had no experience which would prevent me from purchasing another.

The touchpad is less than 1/4 inch below the space bar and is quite sensitive. This isn't a problem in and of itself, but I have noticed that when I am doing a significant amount of typing I will occasionally tap the touchpad accidentally, which usually moves the cursor, which is a minor annoyance. Thankfully the touchpad can be turned off and on using Function-F3, so it's really not problematic.

The screen's resolution is 1024x600. Again, not a problem in and of itself, but problems can arise when programmers choose to use rigid window sizes. While working with some financial software I found that the program was using a window larger than 600 pixels high, throwing all of the window control buttons off the screen. An annoyance, but hardly the fault of the computer.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend this netbook to anyone who is looking for an economical computer with portability in mind.

On the off chance that anyone does have interest, I would like to point out that the Intel Atom processor that this model uses does NOT support hardware virtualization.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Note/Netbook purchase ever

Pros: Small, Lightweight, easy to carry. Runs all I can throw at it as well as some mild gaming (Think Counter Strike:Condition Zero, not Half Life 2, though I'm sure it could on all low).
Battery life is great on this, about 5 hours if you don't use wireless and have the screen turned down.
Easy to type on also

Cons: Stutters a little bit on 720p Hi-Def video
Battery sticks out
Case it comes with holds only the netbook and nothing else and comes with no strap whatsoever (aka, its zippable padding)
Click"bar" is one bar over 2 buttons so you can't simulate a middle click by pressing both at once.

Other Thoughts: I originally purchased this to take with me on a trip to Washington DC with me. I chose the MSI wind because it was one of the only netbooks to have an almost full size right shift key and a 92% full size keyboard which made it really easy to adjust to. I found this netbook great to have beside my bed to play internet radio or movies on hulu (not Hi-def :-/) as I dozed off.

If you are going to get a netbook, get this one. Plus it runs OS X REALLY well (okay, kind of well. It cuts off parts of larger windows and some drivers are missing)

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I’m rather impressed with my MSI U100 (1.6 GHz Intel Atom Proc.). It runs XP reasonably well with its standard 1 gig. of RAM. I did add a gig of memory (Mine is PC2-5300/667 MHz; I used Kingston’s KVR667D2S5.), and it’s noticeably quicker. I’m an old-time hardware guy, and the only other netbooks I’ve had a lot of experience with, are the Asus models. Unlike the Asus units, it has an available memory slot, so expansion is a snap (9 underside screws). Unfortunately, the upgrade will void the warranty (There’s an anti-tamper sticker.). My 1.6 GHz model is much faster than my Asus PC901, and it runs much cooler. You’d be crazy not to use an underside, fan-based cooler, with any netbook.

Cons: RAM upgrade voids warranty.

5 out of 5 eggsU100 - Great netbook!

Pros: - Nice screen
- Runs Win7, OSX, and Ubuntu fast and without problems
- I got the Synaptics touchpad and OSX compatible webcam, so even better.
- Faster than my Core2Duo PC!
- Upgraded the ram to 2GB, and runs even better.

Overall you can't go wrong with this. It's the best netbook you can buy, and is making me consider selling my regular PC!

Cons: Battery life isn't quite 6 hours as advertised (more like 4.5) but isn't that true for all laptops?

Other Thoughts: Great laptop, great price. Get it.

5 out of 5 eggsit's crazy :-D

Pros: This laptop is the best I seen of the mini's I took it and upgraded it. I added a 200gb hard drive 7200rpm and 2GB of DDR2 667 mem and also changed the wireless card to a intel 5300 wireless adapter as well this thing is flying. Even stock it runs great but I have a need for speed as well. I bought this as an open box and the only thing was the battery it came with was not working. I put in a 9 cell battery and it's just sweet now thanks newegg.

Cons: NONE AT ALL

4 out of 5 eggsDecent Laptop

Pros: This laptop is very easy to type on for a mini, it can also handle the hackintosh OS very nicely on tri boot, recognizes all the hardware including the built in camera. XP runs very smoothly and gentoo linux runs like a champ.

Cons: the computer cannot maintain an accurate system time in the XP partition. It is accurate in both gentoo and OS X but every time you boot into XP the clock will be off by up to 3 hours every time. It drives me crazy and is the only reason I gave it a 4 and not a 5=egg

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Netbook

Pros: Beautiful Bright LED screen
Blew my expectations out of the water in terms of performance.
Very fast and responsive for it's modest specifications.
Keyboard doesn't feel too small most of the time.
Plays WOW (a little better with 2 gig's of ram)
Bluetooth built in
Wireless N
Tons of power options and auxiliary device on/off controls to further increase battery life.
Easily overclocks out of the box
Black system came with a black carry bag instead of the ugly white one pictured.
WinRAR and Adobe Reader preinstalled.
Minimal junk/trialware included.
I especially appreciate that they left the Norton Internet Security trial uninstalled with a simple link pointing to the install files should you want to put yourself through norton hell. There is also a link to winzip install files. Don't know if they are a trial or not. Who needs it with a full version of winRAR?

Cons: Keyboard feels slightly cramped, and will take a little getting used to.
Mouse buttons are a little stiff to click, but that is better than too easily clicked.
Overclocking 24% doesn't work for me for some reason. My system locks up and I get graphic abstractions. 16% seems to work fine though, and still nets me 1.86 ghz and 667 mhz ram.

Other Thoughts: This netbook is amazing. It is small, light, and boots/resumes windows xp faster than my HP laptop with a 2 ghz core2 duo with 4 mb ram does. It makes the HP feel slow, which really surprised me. I wish the overclocking to 24% worked, but I can't complain too much I guess. I am about to start dual booting windows 7, which I have heard runs amazing on the wind as well.

Overall, I feel it has been a superb investment.

4 out of 5 eggsGood, but maybe not the best

Pros: I bought this netbook to install OS X on it. I was able to get all of the hardware to work on OS X just fine. You will have to go to the Ralink site to download Mac driver for the RT28xx cards to get wireless working. From my reading, the U100 is the most compatible with OS X. I ran Windows 7 RC on it for a while and it ran quite well, actually much better than OS X. It had all in-box drivers in Win7. The screen is quite bright, with good color. I get maybe 3-4 hours of battery life which might be considered a con compared to other 6 cell netbooks. The keyboard is a good size for a netbook and other than the Fn key, the layout is great. I can touch type just fine.

Cons: I was hoping for better battery life than 4 hours. The speakers are kind of anemic, but I guess this is a netbook. The wireless card is kind of weak. My laptop gets twice the reception with its Intel 2200 b/g card. OS X does not recognize it as wireless so the OS will not treat it like wireless, but it works that is the most important. The keyboard is a little bouncy, and over all the build quality is a little flimsy. The body seems kind of fragile, but it is good enough.

Other Thoughts: I think the MSI U100 is the best choice if you you want to run OS X on a netbook since all of the hardware works. If OS X was not my goal I think there are other netbooks I would have picked first. The Acer Aspire One Asus 1000HE feel much better built. The 1000HE has a nicer keyboard, much better battery life. If I didn't need to run OS X, I would have bought an Asus 1000HE and ran Windows 7 on it. I have recently read that MSI is coming out with a U100 plus that has the faster FSB which will give it much better battery life like the Asus 1000HE has.

4 out of 5 eggsFor the wife

Pros: Bought this for my wife and she loves it. Small, compact, good battery life, big keyboard even for my hands. Great for word processing, internet and streaming movies (DVD and BluRay mkv's).

Cons: The wireless network is a bit finicky. Sometimes it won't connect or takes a while to connect. The "," and "." keys are small. Crtl and Fn are flipped in my opinion. The screen and keyboard are not balanced and tends to fall over. No scroll on the touchpad.

Other Thoughts: The system is solid with the exception of the wireless card. There is NOT a lot of bloat wear that comes with the system so you don't have to spend much time uninstalling junk or trial wear like you would with a Dell. I usually would do a fresh install but not with this machine.
