2 out of 5 eggsCaution

Pros: Once the honeymoon period ended, it is now hard to find many pros about this system.

Cons: Intel i7-2760GM, 16GB Ram, With Windows 7 Ultimate The system seemed fairly stable except for the KLM (Keyboard LED Manager), several times after doing updates had to remove and reinstall KLM for keyboard LED's to function properly. HDMI Video output is extremely poor, and thought THX you only have 2.1 speakers in laptop so not THX and been several forums HDMI on this system does not output more than stereo so again no THX?

Worst part about this system is MSI Support! They have ZERO support for LINUX and well check it out for yourself http://www.msi.com/support/nb/GT780DXGT780DXR.html#down-utility&Win8 64 toggle between Win 7 and Win 8 utilities. I recently upgraded to Win 8 but Drivers and upgrades are extremely limited!

Mater of fact, I did several clean installs just to get KLM (Lighted Keyboard) to work. IF I installed all the Win * drivers the KLM would not work? IF I skipped installing all the drivers from MSI site and manually updated what found in device manager only then would KLM work. Support just told me my system is really old. LOL, 2 year old $1,500 machine and not supported anymore???

In IT Security field and just wanted a beast to run VM's and specs on this machine looked grand but can only say it has brought nothing but disappointment. Raid failed twice so upgraded to OCZ SSD but that failed and replaced by OCZ, remanufactured drive keeps hanging up? Many times in Windows explorer when searching for data it hangs up and recourse monitor doesn't show any activity, close and reopen then most times fast.

Now with Win 8 I can not even connect to TV VIA HDMI, TV Just keeps turning on and off? Might be due to not installing all drivers but install all drivers and something's don't work, install and others don't work.

Every time I have tried MSI's Live update 5 and/or 6 and do all driver updates on WIN 8 it toasts my machine. On Win 7 seemed work alright unless there was an update for MSI Live update, then would have to reinstall SBAR and KLM each time.

If just a gamer and do not care about security or updates, system might be ok? lol

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,
Based on the symptom you reported, many reasons can cause the situation like this. Please note you purchased our GT780DX-215 "complete system" which comes with Operating system/ hardware's, there is no Linux support on complete pre-loaded laptop systems. If you have any other question or concern, Please do not hesitate to contact us directly by email at usreview@msi.com or by phone at our toll free number 888-447-6564 M-F, 6AM to 6PM PST. 5 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop

Pros: This is a very nice laptop as it satisfies most of my needs: 1080p, 17", matte display, GTX570 and backlit keyboard. It also provides quite a few extras that I use a bit such as the display off hotkey, cinema keys (video), button to turn on/off touchpad and the overclock key. The sound on this laptop is excellent also! I've had this for about a month and its been absolutely rock solid. I also like that I can eventually upgrade to an SSD and I also have two memory expansion slots vacant.

Cons: HEAVY! BULKY! It's not a very portable laptop to say the least. I traveled with it twice so far and it's not a light thing to carry to work and home with the A/C adapter.

Other Thoughts: I would highly recommend this to a person that needs a powerful pc for gaming, video, photography, etc but if you are looking for decent portability, I would recommend looking for a different laptop as this is just too large/heavy to be toting around very much. For myself this is a perfect fit as I don't travel often (3-5 times annually) so the laptop sits in one spot often but I do like that it is portable vs. a desktop.

4 out of 5 eggsVery good laptop

Pros: The laptop has very good sound and the screen looks really sharp. The webcam is a lot better than my old laptops and is noticeably better through Skype. The touch keys near the monitor work very well and are a neat touch to the laptop. Ran the system through 3DMark11 and it scored a 2986, from my experience, with laptops that's pretty good. This isn't really a pro on the product but the MSI Live Update does a good job at scanning all hardware/software on the laptop and looking for new drivers

Cons: Mousepad seems to be the biggest con on the system. Need a lot of work. Tracking is fine but scrolling and tapping to click are really bad. Sometimes tapping to click jumps the mouse a good 2 inches from where it was. Scrolling is really choppy and it jumps lines it doesn't actually scroll. Though it was just a driver problem so i installed the drivers for the mousepad and made sure the device manager read the mousepad but it still remains the same.

Other Thoughts: Other's have said the screen is very flimsy and the whole construction for the laptop seems very cheap. The screen is not flimsy and does not show any more flex than any other laptop i've worked with. The rest of the construction does not seem cheap, it's true is almost all plastic but holds up fine in my opinion.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Gaming Laptop

Pros: Awesome performance. Geforce GTX 570M graphics and a great LED-backlit display. Quad-core/hyper-threaded i7. Steel Series keyboard is very durable and works very well. I have been able to run all of my games at the highest settings with the beta Nvidia 285.62 driver installed. The Dynaudio sound system produces the best sound I have ever heard, from a built-in sound system on a notebook! The Cinema Pro mode makes movies and games sound great! I also like the switch that turns the touch pad on and off, so you do not accidentally hit it while playing games.

Cons: Battery life is not great (I expected this, as this is a gaming machine, not a ultra-portable low-power laptop).

Other Thoughts: This laptop is full of hardware potential! In a price vs. hardware comparison (what you get for your money), this laptop has to be at the top. Quality hardware at a very competitive price.
