4 out of 5 eggsAmazing Laptop

Pros: Amazingly fast, has a great gaming grade build and specs. I didn't have to spend much time tweaking it and yet the best thing is the single touch overclocking.

Cons: Very large and very heavy, the power supply alone is huge so it makes it a little akward to carry around in normal laptop bags.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop

Pros: very Fast
Runs almost all games with more than acceptable settings and framerates
Runs pretty cool for how powerful it is

Cons: Large so not super protable

Other Thoughts: It was an excellent value. I got it end of life when it was discontinued and got a great deal on Newegg. I use this laptop everyday. and while it does not completely replace my desktop for gaming, it does an excellent job.

3 out of 5 eggsFried in 11 months

Pros: Overall this was a good laptop. I purchased it to replace the desktop I had built 3 years ago. It played all my games on max settings, WoW, Diablo 3, STO, Black Ops. Good frames per second. Screen is large and looks great. The overclock feature is nice also. Onboard sound is excellent for a laptop.

Cons: Constantly over heats while playing games and shuts off. Keys on the keyboard feel cheap and have even poped off. Constantly have to update the drivers for the onboard wi fi because for some reason it keeps droping the drivers and does not recognize the wifi.

Other Thoughts: Purchased this thing for over 1400 back in February of 2012. Today when I went to turn it on I heard a pop, smelled burning plastic and electronics. The laptop turns on but when I plug in the charger it will not charge. To make matters worse I forgot to register the product and now seem to be out of luck. Overall I would say this was a decent purchase. Would be nice if it did not have the heating issues and I even used a laptop cooler while playing but it still over heated and shut off constantly. Now, its just a 1400 dollar paperweight. Maybe someone else will have better luck than I did but if your going to spend that much money better be sure you register your product.

2 out of 5 eggsBSODS and disc checks kill it

Pros: It's a beast . . . when it works.

Cons: BSODS, memory dumps, games constantly crashing, and the disk checks on reboot are insanely frustrating. It doesnt have every time, but it happens multiple times daily. I cant even check the ram because the warranty is automatically voided if I open the thing up. Ridiculous!

Other Thoughts: Seemed like the price with the components couldnt be beat; but, that's probably just because the @#$%ing components dont work. Stay away from this one.

Pros: great desktop replacement, i like the design although....who cares...it has to work as described and it does, play games and then some, love keyboard!, really good speakers, stable platform all around, added 256gb ssd which is almost must have to complete this machine.

Cons: soft key for opening dvd tray

Other Thoughts: my second one, own a 215 model i bought almost year ago and it never dissapointed me though almost paid $700 more fot that one. Got this for $1,000 and even more mem and lil higher cpu....awsome deal! Adding ssd to this one too...for sure!

3 out of 5 eggsWhy this keyboard?

Pros: Awesome machine that losses it's appeal because of the keyboard. See below.

Cons: The keyboard is the worst I have ever used!!! I've owned this laptop since 12/2011 and and I finally must comment on the extreme frustration level of the Steelseries keyboard on this model. I haven't read any recent reviews so perhaps the keyboard has been redesigned.

But, keys will not engage requiring the keyboard to be forcefully pounded, and words rewritten or corrected. And the slightest touch to the mouse pad sends the cursor off to some unknown location. Is it a coincidence there's an off button above the mouse pad?

4 out of 5 eggsMost power for lowest price

Pros: It's really inexpensive and has the highest power per dollar I was able to find by far (as of 9/2012). Can run pretty much any game at the very high settings that I've tried so far (when plugged in and set to high performance mode).

I hooked up some wireless PS3 controllers to it and it makes a great media center (using XBMC) that I hook up to my big screen with an HDMI cable.

Screen is huge and the adjustable lighted keyboard is really cool (you can make it any color you want/multicolor) and helpful when working in the dark. Screen also looks amazing.

Surprisingly light for size.

Cooler booster is a neat feature and it comes with an overclock program for the graphics card.

Overall very happy with the performance and haven't had any serious problems with it so far.

Cons: Not sure if this is actually a problem but the battery will pretty often indicate that it's "plugged in but not charging" sometimes but only when the laptop is at 90% charge or greater. I ran MSI's built in battery calibration tool (very good program by the way) and it seemed to indicate that nothing was wrong however I still get that message every now and then (though it's yet to really be a problem). It charges just fine most of the time. There's at least a year warranty on it so I'm not too worried about the battery but will be keeping tabs on it in case it needs to be replaced before the warranty is up.

The build seems really delicate so I'm careful not to be too rough with it. When I bought this it came with a backpack deal (which I didn't think I would use) but I would definitely recommend getting a nice padded backpack for this laptop due to how fragile and huge it is.

A lot of the keys are in weird non-traditional places (e.g. Windows key is on the right instead of the left). It's a minor inconvenience however I got used to pretty fast.

Laptop (obviously) is really huge and need to be plugged in to really get a decent amount of performance. I wouldn't really say it's super portable due to this + it's size. I mainly use mine as a desktop replacement so this isn't a problem for me at all though.

OS comes installed with some minor bloatware but it takes only minutes to remove them all. There's a thing called the S-Bar (it's like a menu that floats at the top of the screen) that I didn't really like so I disabled it. Unfortunately a lot of the features the special keys use need the S-Bar open to work so that kind of was disappointing.

These are all very minor problems though and I'm overall very happy with this laptop so far.

Other Thoughts: I've heard that having 12GB of ram isn't great since having an odd number of sticks means it's not taken advantage of dual channel speed. I have no idea if this is true but heard you can fix this by removing or adding a stick. I heard this may void the warranty though.

I personally don't have a very huge RAM bottleneck so I don't care but just wanted to let other people know.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Brent,

The battery behavior is normal since there's a built-in protection circuit to prevent overcharge, see below for our FAQ on this topic.

4 out of 5 eggsgreat laptop

Pros: great pc.
even without the turbo or the cooling fan cranked up it runs all my games with med to high settings without getting hot.
backlit keyboard is easy to see in the dark.

Cons: 2 hdd slots, but no second hdd retainer. msi website has no info on how to obtain another.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Saul,

The bracket is not included on every model since the secondary drive is held using a rubber block in between the side wall and the drive itself.
The rubber piece itself is not included for models with single drive such as the one you have.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the product, please do not hesitate to contact us directly at usreview@msi.com and we will be more than happy to assist you, thank you.
