3 out of 5 eggsPretty Good But...

Pros: What can I say? Its a Beef Supreme laptop that beats most if not all of my friends desktop PCs. Runs every game on ultra that I've thrown at it so far with no issues. Boots very quickly.

Overall I am very happy with the laptop, Now onto my complaints about it.

Cons: Its advertised as a 1080p HD webcam, yet the quality is terrible. I took a small clip of it, but the rules says no URLs for this review, and made a support ticket with MSI and their techs said this picture is the same quality on the machine they tested. When I told them its not true 1080P and its grainy they said its working fine. I have a 1080P webcam at home so I know what the picture is supposed to look like.

My next problem is, the killer doubleshot ethernet/wifi controller on this laptop is glitchy on windows 8. if your connected with a lan wire when trying to play certain games, windows 8 crashes and you must force reboot the laptop. it works fine with just wifi but when im at home and at my desk, i want to use my lan to ensure the best speeds. I've googled this problem and it seems nearly everyone complains about this yet no resolution has been made to fix/correct the problem. When I mentioned it many times to MSI support, it was pretty much ignored.

Next problem I've noticed with this laptop is the battery. I think I was provided a semi-dead battery as this cannot hold a charge for nothing. If you fully charge it, and shutdown windows, and try to turn back on the laptop after 3 days of it sitting, its completely dead. I have yet to play this on just battery as it doesnt seem to hold its charge. I would submit a ticket to MSI but i feel they would say this is normal. and ignore it like all my other problems.

my other laptop which is a 7 year old acer holds its charge like a champ, it can be charged then unplugged for a month and the charge is still around 100% when I go to use it. I find this is unacceptable for a brand new laptop to not even hold a charge for a couple of days when its off.

Other Thoughts: Other than the issues listed above, the laptop runs great. Only high end PCs can compete with it, And since I own a high end PC I mainly use my laptop when im at work or wanting to game with friends at their house.

Very disappointed with the horrible support given by MSI and how they just ignore my issues and tell me this is normal. it seems like false advertising to me.

if someone from MSI wants to provide me a replacement battery for my laptop, I may say this is a 4 egg product, but currently I'm only going to give it a 3 for these issues.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We apologize for the issues that you are having with this product.
Webcam was advertised as 720P camera but not 1080P, see below spec page.
http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GT70-0NE.html#?div=Specification
We have updates from Qualcomm to resolve issues for their Killer devices, see below for driver updates (be sure to run driver cleaner utility first).
http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GT70-0NE.html#/?div=Driver&os=Win8%2064
The system's EC (Embedded Controller) still drains power while the system is off, therefore if you should remove the battery if you do not want the system to drain the power, but the EC settings may be lost thus need to be reactivated.

If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch with our tech support team directly at 626.271.1004 for assistance during regular business hours from M to F, 9am to 6pm Pacific Time.
Or you can email us at usreview@msi.com, thank you.

5 out of 5 eggsWorth every dime.

Pros: Every single thing about this laptop! If you're a dedicated gamer, and you have the money, give that money to MSI. This laptop is the Mona Lisa of gaming laptops (as of right now). Great internal cooling system, backlit keys, i7, GTX 680M, full touchscreen board, Blu ray disk drive, bluetooth 3.0 (x3), etc. It's a beautiful machine.

Cons: Storage and Windows 8. If you own an external HDD and you're skilled at BIOS configuring, you should not have a problem with either or. Installing Windows 7 isn't the easiest feat, but I will say this; I HATED Win8. I actually love it now that I'm used to it (besides compatibility issues with windows live games). Overall, the pros outweigh the cons tenfold.

Other Thoughts: Have the money? SPEND IT ON THIS!!

5 out of 5 eggsGT70

Pros: Awesome notebook, looks good, runs fast, plenty of features. Speeds are right were I expected them to be around and this machine runs all the games I play at maxed settings without any issues.

Cons: This is a great machine but let me tell you, the OS that came installed on my computer was all messed up, wouldn't let me install updates or even install apps. I wiped the partition not realizing the implications of UEFI and of course it would just tell me that the product key entered didn't match the iso since apparently its embedded into the firmware/bios. I was trying to install win 8 pro upgrade mind you. A 2700$ notebook telling me I cant load what I want to it. ... $#! So after playing around with a few things I managed to figure out how to load a new OS and figured I would post it here. First get your ISO image of win8, burn it to a disk unmodified, make a bootable usb flash drive and copy all the files to the flash drive. Next open notepad and copy this into it.

[Channel]
volume

[VL]
1
then save the file as (ei.cfg). Make sure the .txt is not on it and put that into the sources dir. on your flash drive. Set your bios to boot from CD then USB as 2nd, and start the install, I did this in uefi mode to, windows sees a legit disk and starts the process, then it sees the usb with the modified image and a glitch kicks the install source over to the usb drive, this bypasses the auto input of a KEY and gives you the option to choose your install, I used a third usb drive to load my raid drivers and presto! all the drives showed up and it was a typical windows installation from there on, I skipped the key input field just to be on the safe side of any problems and put it in after windows was installed. She's up and running like a dream and no looking back. Thx for noting MSI/Microsoft.... Hope this helps anyone with a similar problem.

Other Thoughts: Its pretty dumb I had to install windows with a install DVD in the drive and a bootable USB drive but heck, at least its nothing to complicated, I originally called their tech support to see if I could get my CD key for windows 8, ... The guy I talked to tried to tell me they didn't load windows 8 to this model. .. seriously MSI were do you find these people.. But I must admit, now that this thing is up and running I don't have a single regret. The Bookbag and the headphones it came with are pretty nice, at least I was impressed.

5 out of 5 eggsThe SSJ4 Goku of Laptops

Pros: - Great construction. The overall build quality is excellent. Is it too heavy? Not to me. This is not an ultrabook; nor is it supposed to be. The brushed aluminum is not only beautiful, but it's also essentially FINGERPRINT-PROOF! As is the palm rest
- Trackpad is spacious, with nice accents
- Speaker system is top notch, loud, distortion-free and even pleasantly bassy (due to the subwoofer)
- SteelSeries keyboard is well-sized, has solid feedback and is above average in quality
- Keyboard has nice backlighting which is fully customizable by using the onboard KLM software
- Win8 is pre-loaded onto the spacious SSD, which makes OS functions and bootup lightning fast
- Gold-plated audio jacks make it a breeze to connect this bad boy to external speaker systems
- Fairly quiet to my ears
- The backpack and headset bonus items are a combined value of just under $200, and are both high quality extras
- Gaming performance is as good as it gets, as of this writing
- The wireless module (Killer Wireless) comes with some pretty wicked software. According to some demonstrations on YouTube (which seem legit), it provides better and more consistent latency than competitors

Cons: - Windows 8 UI blows for desktop users, but this is easily remedied by third-party software, and the OS is speedy and does have some improvements
- Though it has 3 USB 3.0 ports, they're all on the left side (with 2 USB 2.0 on the right). No big deal though.
- The display (which thanks to MSI's engineering, can be easily swapped out by the user if you prefer a different configuration, look this up) has a slight grainy texture to it when viewing solid colors under certain conditions. However, it's big, fairly bright, and glare-free. More of a neutral than a con.
- Left-side Windows key has been removed (there's still one on the right) in order to avoid accidents while gaming. Thus, if you used that key a lot, you won't have it (though you can always map out alternate shortcuts).

Other Thoughts: This thing flies, is quality construction, and looks awesome. No, it isn't too big. It's the perfect size for its purpose. It feels very solid and appropriately weighted when carried (but again, I'm not after ultraportability; this is a desktop replacement). Feels good when used on my lap too. I had to use MSI customer service due to a minor issue, and they were extremely responsive and helpful, which is a good sign. I've not used the Alienware, Asus, or any other competitor, but honestly, I don't need to. My expectations were pretty high and this laptop exceeded them.

4 out of 5 eggsVery nice and heavy laptop

Pros: Backlit keyboard,
higher end mobile GPU,
Core I7 quad core processor
16 gigs ram,
raid 0 of 2 128gig SSD's and a storage drive of 750gig
Bluetooth built in,

Backpack type bag is the Demolition model from Targus, just embroidered with MSI's logo. This is a really nice bag. I thought a free bag with any item would have been a cheep P.O.S., but not this bag. it's built very well, with lots of padding and a good bit of space. If you wanted to carry the large headphones that came with the laptop, it will fit nicely in the bag with everything else.

Cons: battery life is around 3 hours, but if I'm going to be gaming, I'm going to be plugged in.
really heavy,
Windows 8 Standard,
no display port or DVI connectors and no port changers

I had a few problems with the Nvidia drivers. Make sure to get the MSI SCM product updated as I started to have problem with the pre-installed version, and it may be connected to the issue I had where it would allow me to log in, but then would automatically log me out. Not reboot, just log out, but it was a cycle I couldn't break without doing a restore/factory reset.
I was able to make a ghost image using a UBCD4Win disc, but I had to change the BIOS settings to legacy instead of UEFI and then back to load Windows 8. This saved me from having to go all the way back to factory settings. Windows restore point didn't fix the issue. Don't think it's a problem with the hardware, but I am wishing I could get Win 7 drivers for this machine.

I also had a hard time switching the default GPU to Nividia instead of Intel's HD 4000 built in to the CPU, which is what caused the first factory reset. The second reset was when I was trying to update to the new 314 version of the drives from Nvidia. I got things squared away, but very strange behavior from the machine/driver combo

Really big con. I was unable to use the built in Windows backup utility to make a drive image because one of the partitions didn't have enough space for VSS to do it's magic.

Warranty sticker on the bottom, preventing me from opening it up and working on my own laptop. Guess I won't be updating the storage drive to a 1tb any time soon.

Other Thoughts: I wasn't expecting all the items I got with it since I bought the Dragon edition.

I feel that the headset works better for a desktop then a laptop. Why provide such a large headset with wires when the laptop has bluetooth capabilities. The headset could have been bluetooth ones and it would have reduced the amount of wires.

Power supply didn't have any velcro straps so I had to get some myself.

The stickers for Intel, Nvidia, and THX are on the left side. They could have moved these to the right side under the number pad and my hands would not have been on top of them. This also allows them to be seen more when typing normally. On the left they are under my left hand when I type and play games.

I spent close to 3 grand on this laptop and it doesn't come with Windows 8 Pro? Seriously? I have to spend another $100 to get the Windows 8 pro pack? :/

I really thought turbo mode went out back in the 80's or 90's. That's on intel and not on MSI

I wish the backlit keyboard had a way to save the profile of what my color choices are. I would like to see the keyboard light up at start up so that I can see the keys when I type in my password. seems that it doesn't light up until I am logged in and the KLM software starts and loads up.

Be sure to get the MSI Live Update 5 software to help update the firmware and other software provided by MSI

5 out of 5 eggsgreat

Pros: everything not in cons, also not sure if they're still doing it, it wasn't listed on newegg, but a set of amazing headphones come with this baby, wish I had been sent the red dragon edition ones though

Cons: windows 8, no dedicated media keys, headset color, windows 8

Other Thoughts: if I had known they use adata ssd's and didn't care about waranty I probably would have had mine custom built

1 out of 5 eggsHardcore laptop should have higher Q/A

Pros: When it is working it is a very fast machine.

Cons: I have not had this computer working for more than 48 hours. The system keeps loosing one of the SSD's in the raid setup. The first time it happend the computer locked up and I thought I messed up by deleting the raid setup. It took a week and a half for MSI to send me a set of recovery discs. This happend on the first day I got the computer. It is not fun to spend almost 3000 on a computer and pay for faster shipping and having it break on the first day. Well I managed to get the computer fixed before the recovery discs came in. Not a day and a half later I am back in the same boat with it saying it cannot see one of the sdd's again. Now I have to ship it to MSI to get it repaired and I have to pay for shipping.

Other Thoughts: This really should not happen with a new high-end computer. So all in it looks like I will be waiting a month to get my BRAND NEW computer back to use it.
