1 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: MSI GE Series GE70 2OE-017US Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4700MQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 750GB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M 2GB GDDR5 17.3" Windows 8 64-Bit

Pros: Great specs and worked great for about 3 days.

Cons: Fans have stopped working and it's beginning to overheat. Did a quick Google search and have found this is a VERY common issue with this laptop and other MSI laptops are am very disappointed. My son saved up his money for 2 years to buy this computer and it hasn't even lasted a week. I've tried to get a RMA from Newegg, but the automated process says I have to phone in and I'm afraid they are going to give me the runaround and say to contact MSI directly, who has a horrible reputation regarding customer service. Either Newegg can give me satisfaction or I'll dispute the charge with my credit card company.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop!

This review is from: MSI GE Series GE70 2OE-017US Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4700MQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 750GB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M 2GB GDDR5 17.3" Windows 8 64-Bit

Pros: Fast, Reliable, Runs Cool, Great for College, Quick load times, Lightweight but very strong (does not flex)

Cons: Only one exhaust vent on the side so if your using it on your lap, do not block the vent. Rear facing vents would be better. AC cord plugs into side as well, kind of in the way, again a rear port would be better. Battery isn't very big. Does not have a SSD drive.

Other Thoughts: This is a great laptop. I bought it for my wife to use with her online college program. I wanted her to have a fairly powerful computer to handle everything. She uses a ton of different programs. It's a great multitask-er. She'll have a hundred different windows open at once! Can't comment on the graphics as she has just used it for school work but it runs super fast and everything looks great. Most laptops come with SSD drives now, but you really don't miss it with this computer. Everything loads fast, including Windows when you first start it up.

4 out of 5 eggsFirst Gaming Computer

This review is from: MSI GE Series GE70 2OE-017US Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4700MQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 750GB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M 2GB GDDR5 17.3" Windows 8 64-Bit

Pros: Fast, simple, and easy to handle. Not sounding like a gaming computer? Well, maybe not a super high end one, but surly a decent one. All I could say when I opened the computer for the first time was "wow". Everything down to the details were amazing. Also, this is a fast computer. Mind you, I'm not an average Joe when it comes to tech. I've played BF4 on Med., Bioshock infenent on Med., and COD, all with no FPS drops. Graphics are no problem at all. The keyboard, also, is to die for, almost feeling like a mechanical at that. The RAM and the hard drive are, also, well kept.

Cons: The only downside that i can foresee would be, of course, windows 8. But now with 8.1, Its not bad at all. I would recommend 8.1 over 7 all day actually. Also, its ether the ram or the hard drive, not sure which one, that will give you some problems, going to max capacity for no reason. But do not fret, it does not hinder the computers life expectancy of preformence at all.

Other Thoughts: I recommend This computer to anyone who needs a high quality computer but does not want to be limited by a heavy desktop. Also, if you are expecting this to be top of the top, High preference beast, look elsewhere. As amazing as this computer is, it is caped at the highest preformance a mobile graphics card can put out. (In this case, a GTX 765m is not bad, even better than most middle-end desktops.)

4 out of 5 eggsGood laptop - horrible OS

This review is from: MSI GE Series GE70 2OE-017US Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4700MQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 750GB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M 2GB GDDR5 17.3" Windows 8 64-Bit

Pros: -Backlit keys
-Manual turbo fan (extends laptop life)
-1080p
-Beautiful 17.3 screen
-Super fast CPU
-Super fast video card
-BLU-Ray player with DVD/CD burner
-Has mSATA slot(s) for expansion (like to UPGRADE to Windows 7. Windows 8 is actually a downgrade IMO)
-7200 RPM HHD. Most laptops give a junk 5400 RPM drive.

Cons: -Windows 8. Microsoft's fault, not MSI's.
-I wish the arrow keys were moved slightly down, or they had some physical thing that will make it easier to feel for. You know how the F and J keys have a little feel thingy? Seriously, MSI should have done the same for the arrow keys. My Acer laptop moves the arrow keys slightly down.
-It doesn't make me breakfast.

Other Thoughts: I first bought the MSI G Series GE70 2OE-017US, but then realized the MSI G Series GE70 2OE-071US not only 95% identical, but was better. The 71 version come with a 1TB 7200 RPM hard drive (vs 750GB for the 17 version), but the best part: it comes Windows 7, 64-bit and not the Windows 8 junk Microsoft tries to shove down all their loyal customer's throats!!! I think the 17 version comes with 2 mSATA slots. I returned the 17 for a 71 for $1,050 from a different retailer on sale!!! and installed an mSATA drive and have been rejoicing since. 10 seconds to boot into Windows 7. You can still find the 71 version for a similar price as the 17 version. I seriously don't know why anyone would buy the 17 version when you can buy the 71 version.

For my mSATA SSD, I installed a fresh copy of Windows 7, 64-bit, using the activation codes on the bottom of the laptop. I had to use the Microsoft automated system to activate Windows after the first time it attempted to auto activate online and failed. But, I found all the drivers and apps on MSI's site, except for the BLU-Ray playing software. Oh well. Can't win it all.

If you're smart, you won't break the warranty sticker. *wink wink*

1 out of 5 eggsMalfunction screen. DO NOT BUY

This review is from: MSI GE Series GE70 2OE-017US Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4700MQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 750GB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M 2GB GDDR5 17.3" Windows 8 64-Bit

Pros: Run well before the screen messed up.

Cons: Screen messed up after 6 months and MSI charged be $245 to fix.

Other Thoughts: When I call MSI tech support, they told me to send it in and they will fix for free. I paid $30 to shop to them. Week and half later they ask for my credit card and said it will cost $275.00 to repair. Will never buy from this horrible scamming company again. Very unhappy customer. I am still paying payment on the laptop and now have to pay more. Wishing so much that I didn't purchase this laptop, but hopefully can warn others.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat deal for a gaming laptop

This review is from: MSI GE Series GE70 2OE-017US Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4700MQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 750GB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M 2GB GDDR5 17.3" Windows 8 64-Bit

Pros: Price/performance, build quality, keyboard is awesome plus it is backlit (more on this on down), Expansion ability, display, NVidia graphics.

I bought this at a competing online store on sale (currently pretty much retail here). I had purchased the GE60 for my son to replace his ageing Asus i3 that just doesn't game at all with integrated graphics. I was so impressed with the graphics performance that I bought this for myself to replace my Sony VAIO that has the NVidia GT540M. The GTX765M is a LOT faster. For expansion, there are two msata connectors. Has the ability to run RAID 0 when both msata connectors are used, or they can simply be used as separate drives. Comes setup in the BIOS as EUFI and the HDD is GPT rather than MBR. Nice recovery program to allow you to create a 5 DVD recovery set or a USB recovery key (this requires at least 14.92GB usable space, and a 16GB USB key has around 14.8GB which isn't enough, I had to go up to a 32 GB USB key in order to create one). Has a button to allow you to boost the cooling fan should a person wish to run it on maximum all the time, otherwise it is regulated as required.
The backlighting can be all on, all off, or partially lit, over the typical gaming keys on the left side of the KB. The keyboard on this laptop is the best I've used, the construction of the laptop seems to be top notch, and the style is one of the nicer looking ones IMO.

Cons: touchpad. The one on my GE70 isn't 'bad', but the one on my son's is horrible. Very inconsistent with required touch. Sometimes a light touch works, other times it seems it need to more pressure. I don't like the touchpad buttons as they are simply pressing down on the lower corners of the touchpad. This is pretty much moot for both of us as we use a wireless USB mouse. But seriously, the touchpad could be a LOT better. There were complaints about the touchpad on my Sony VAIO VPCF233FX, but in comparison, the Sony touchpad is far better.

Other Thoughts: I debated on whether or not to reinstall with windows 7, I dislike windows 8. From reviewing the MSI forum, I noticed some people were having driver compatibility issues with windows 7 so I am staying with windows 8, just adding the Start8 to get my desktop menu back.
I had upgraded this laptop to windows 8.1, it was pretty much straight forward and worked fine. However, after upgrading to 8.1 I noticed some features about windows that I use (according to Microsoft it's not a fan favorite so they did away with it completely in windows 8.1), namely the Windows 7 Backup that allows a system image to be created. While windows 8 did away with the windows 7 backup and chose to go with file history instead, they at least left the windows 7 image creation ability in there, it is totally gone in 8.1. Also, I have a WHS2011 server at home in which I use to backup all laptops and PC's at home. The upgrade modified the system partition, and actually created a new one. Doing so would not allow the laptop to be backed up to the server so that a full BMR could be performed if necessary. This was another unacceptable to me (it's an upgrade issue, if you had 8.1 full install, this would be a problem). While I was able to go back to windows 8, and it allowed me to perform a BMR backup, it left a directory that I just couldn't remove, yet was useless. I used my USB recovery key I had made and did a total system restore which puts the notebook back to as if it were brand new, turned on for the first time. Life was all well and good again...

There isn't much bloatware as some have claimed. You get trials of Norton internet security, laptop theft protection and online backup. I removed all of this. Then there is also Magic MX, and Microsoft office. I don't know about magic MX, but MS office was even a trial version. It asks for a key, or allows you to buy a key and install. Also come with an app to allow you to play android apps in windows. Removing all of that cleans it up nicely and unloads a few items from loading at startup to speed things up.

I've ordered a Crucial 240GB msata drive from here and will restore the software to that drive, then use the HDD for program installation.

3 out of 5 eggsPretty Decent

This review is from: MSI GE Series GE70 2OE-017US Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4700MQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 750GB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M 2GB GDDR5 17.3" Windows 8 64-Bit

Pros: Pretty fast laptop, great CPU and awesome video card. The keyboard is very nice and the sound is actually pretty good. Great for gaming and its not too heavy.

Cons: Had an issue with updates taking hours to complete. I had to run some odd command in a dos box to fix it. Windows 8 sucks, I installed a program to bring back the start menu. The touch pad is awful. It really bothers me, it takes lots of pressure to press down. I would rather have a normal pad with 2 buttons below it. Too much bloat ware. Awful battery life.

Other Thoughts: I shouldn't have to run commands out of the box to get it to work correctly. But after a few days of tinkering and using an external mouse this is a pretty good laptop. Just keep it plugged in.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Hardware, Bad OS

This review is from: MSI GE Series GE70 2OE-017US Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4700MQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 750GB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M 2GB GDDR5 17.3" Windows 8 64-Bit

Pros: Thin, Powerful, Nice non-glare screen and the sound is not bad either. In the price range only Asus offers any real competition. I think bang for the buck this Laptop is a very good value comparatively. The Video card is tough but does run pretty warm get a lap cooling pad it does wonders. they can run pretty warm as long as there is fresh air moving the overall temps stay manageable it is quite a piece of hardware they have shoehorned into this thin chassis expect the aluminum to get warm if you are taxing it.

Cons: Windows 8 I would seriously suggest to anyone buying this laptop purchase a copy of windows 7 with it. I am currently referring to a fresh windows 7 install as my windows 8 laptop repair kit. MSI does supply a full array of windows 7 drivers that work very well. I also plan on adding a msata ssd those additions make this a complete powerhouse of a machine. FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD AND RIGHT IN THE WORLD MSI SHIP IT WITH WINDOWS 7. It would save me a lot of time. Also took a little bit to get the blueray working properly I may look into some different player software.

Other Thoughts: Over all a good buy the OS is not my cup of tea on a laptop. To clarify I am not a windows 8 hater it simply wasn't developed to be a good desktop/laptop OS it is for touch applications. That is just the truth of the matter and it is reflected in the architecture. That being said add a ssd with fresh win 7 install and you have a very premium collection of components for the price. N'uff Said.
