4 out of 5 eggsreview after several years

Pros: Hardware was what I was looking for.

Cons: Three keys are becoming very unresponsive on the keyboard ('e', '1' and 'i' for some reason). For gaming or regular typing, an external keyboard has started to be come a requirement.

The load time for games was surprisingly worse than I was expecting. Even when the laptop was brand new, the HDD was performing worse than the previous generation of MSI laptop (3rd Generation Intel Core i7 versions) when both were loading into the same game of League of Legends. Over a year later, switching in a SSD resolved that issue.

Some games ran slower than expected for the type of game. Had to change Windows settings for performance before I could play Don't Starve without having some points of the game bring the framerate to a near standstill.

Other Thoughts: I still like MSI's hardware, and I'm writing this review after placing an order for MSI GE Series GE72. I do hope the steelseries laptop keyboard last longer on the next one. Same for the HDD performance, since I don't want to swap out the HDD until after the warranty has expired.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat hardware, horrible software

Pros: good performance for this price range ;

very customizable: 2 empty msata SSD slots, 1 empty Ram slot, so you can add more hard drives and Ram, even change your wifi card if you like;

I like the keyboard;

Touchpad is ok, although not great but it works with Linux.

Graphic card is good for most of the large 3D games.

Cons: windows 8 is a piece of *. I don't know why msi preinstall this * instead of windows 7.

Some windows 8 default drivers doesn't work well.

Bloatware in windows 8 again...

Hard to configure BIOS to choose between which graphic card you use, intel or Nvidia. In Linux you have to install bumblebee to run steam games with optirun.

Other Thoughts: Everything is great, except for the horrible windows8.

If you're a linux user, you need to find your own way out for all the drivers and other stuff. Fortunately I found every piece of driver in linux community and works great now, but it'll always be nice to have bare minimum support from manufacture, like driver downloads, which shouldn't be very hard.

4 out of 5 eggsPentest and VMs

Pros: Laptop was onsale and had a rebate when I bought it.
Works great for various labs and practice for infosec and pentesting.
Not that heavy or bulky of a laptop

Cons: MSI had a rebate that took about 4 months to get to me. I wasn't really sure if I was ever going to get one.
Standard amount of bloatware.

Other Thoughts: This is the first laptop I have bought to use for running multiple VMs and it excels at the task. There might be better laptops out there for this job, but getting it for sub $900 was a great deal.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for the Price

Pros: Computer definatly has a nice design. I see what people were talking about with the mouse pad however, once you get used to it, its not bad. The turbo boost fan is pretty cool, it pulls alot of heat from the computer when being heavily used. I purchaced this computer mostly for the price, and for Engineering CAD work.

Cons: People were definatly correct about Windows 8 or even 8.1. I figured once I bought the computer, I could test it out for a while, that OS seems to consume alot of resources. I believe thats generally why some say they get the BSoD.

Other Thoughts: I've installed Windows 7 on it and it works amazingly. If you can get past the terreble OS that it comes with, this computer will be fine. If you are a real die hard gamer, I would suggest buying this computer for the price, and downgrading to Windows 7 OS. MSI website has all the drivers and Utilities needed. If you call MSI tech support, they definatly know there stuff.

4 out of 5 eggsSo Far So Good

Pros: -Outstanding specs
-keyboard lights
-good sound

Has been able to play any game I've thrown at it with no glitching at all.

Cons: -Mouse pad really sucks i dont know why they would put something like this on such a great computer its really frustrating

-it doesnt come with bluray

Other Thoughts: If i experience any problems i will update but other than the mouse pad this computer is a definite powerhouse

4 out of 5 eggsupdate to previous review

Pros: Installed Skyrim as per previous review, and the game initially set it for ultra low quality. Restarting the game after updating the drivers for Nvidia, it now detected the Geforce 765M and re-set itself for "high" quality. For comparison, my desktop with a GeForce 480 and Intel i3 sets for Ultra High.

The fans have always been super quiet, I don't know what the other reviews are talking about.

There is absolutely no stuttering while watching a blu-ray rip of Pacific Rim. Audio is great, as well. Fairly loud for laptop speakers, though having a nice 3d Soundblaster Tactics 3d Sigma headset is better.

Cons: Took me awhile to figure out how to turn on the webcam, since Windows could not detect it and nothing showed up in Device Manager. It's just not "on" by default. It uses Windows native drivers.

Other Thoughts: The button to turn the keyboard lights on is at the top left, above the "steelseries" logo. Also, the webcam is enabled through fn+f6.

All things considered, it's a nice device for the price, but I think if I could do it all over, I'd get the Apache version with the 17.3" screen and Geforce 860.

5 out of 5 eggsPerformance

Pros: Expandable, it supports two msata drives and a regular sized drive The bios also support raid setup. The keyboard lights up blue, and you can light up only half if you want. The fan has a manual button for high speed-VERY useful.

Cons: trackpad is a bit frustrating and takes getting used to. I found I could not play the simplest game with the default ELAN drivers, they are terrible I unistalled em and use the default mouse drivers for the laptop.
Battery life- obviously terrible

Other Thoughts: Overall I love it, it's like a heater while gaming but still plays great and for the price of $880 where could you get a better laptop, alienware with lesser features is $1700. This is a great deal.

4 out of 5 eggsHave had it a week, just now took it out of the box...

Pros: I received the product less than 30 hours after placing the order, even using the free 1-week eggsaver shipping.
I installed Ccleaner, Chrome+Drive, Defraggler and a few other popular programs, then uninstalled the ubiquitous Norton software infesting it. I have yet to *actually* install any games on it yet, but it definitely feels like a very sturdy laptop as far as laptops go. The keyboard is a dream. The network controller is blazing fast as well. After defragging and running Windows Updates for a couple hours, the Windows Experience Index has the following scores:
CPU 7.9
RAM 7.9
Desktop Graphics 5.0 (using the Intel HD 4000 chipset, I believe?)
Gaming Graphics 6.8 (using the Geforce 765M)
HDD data transfer rates 5.9

Also, you can't really go wrong with a new laptop that is after a rebate cheaper than a refurbished model ( admittedly with more ram and HDD space, or an open-box model with extremely similar specs (

Cons: 1) Out of the box, the touchpad requires multiple times of dragging a finger across to get the cursor from one side of the screen to the other. Adjusting cursor speed in Control Panel to the maximum helps this a lot, so it feels more like a normal mouse. At maximum speed, the cursor will just barely go from all the way on the left side of the screen to the right side by dragging your finger from one side of the pad to the other.

2) It isn't a touchscreen, if you like that sort of thing. That could be a pro for some people.

3) Doesn't have a SSD... yet.

4) Also no Blu-Ray Disc drive... yet.

Other Thoughts: I will come back and update this review in a few days once I install a few games. I anticipate Low Video Quality on Skyrim, which seems to be the popular benchmark. I also have not used it to watch any movies yet.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop for a low price!

Pros: + Fast laptop all around and can game with high settings on most games.
+ Beautiful finish on the laptop lid

Cons: - Touchpad can take some getting use to but I think its just a few gesture settings that I need to tweak
- Battery only last about 2-3hrs with normal use. Can last around 30mins-1hour gaming

Other Thoughts: Newegg happily refunded me the difference when the price of the laptop changed the day after I ordered! Always great service Newegg!

2 out of 5 eggsRegret buying this

Pros: The specs
the keyboard lights up
looks cool

Cons: first excuse the typo, i am writing this in a hurry
the first day i got it, it already had a blue screen. saying windows ran in to a problem and had to restart. Throughout the week this happened more
i also hate windows 8. when i first got it , it was so confusing because i my previous one was a windows 7.
the touch pad is annoying.
and the key board is the worst. everything is jammed together. the arrow keys LITERALLY invades the number pad on the left side. it you look at the pictures provided youll know what i mean. it is VERY inconvient because i keep misclicking due to the awkward placing of it. they decided to add an extra "\" button on the bottom of the keyboard for NO REASON. that literally made no sense.

Other Thoughts: Im a college student who is going through finals and essays right now. this laptop caused me so much unnecessarily stress.
