1 out of 5 eggsCustomer Service

Pros: This is an awesomely fast laptop with a good look about it. The lighted keyboard is great and the weight isn't too bad.

Cons: The customer service sucks, I tried calling the company to get my win8 product key which they inconveniently put in the bios. Win 8.1 will not accept it that way they want the win key, MSI tech support tells me they don't have it and that I should try to get a win 8 disk from a friend or something to make it work. Then they give me the number to customer service and the run around starts. Love the computer but would never buy again because it sounds a little shady to not be able to provide the product key for programs that they loaded in the computer.

Other Thoughts: It was also suggested to me by tech support that I try another operating system instead of windows, told him if I wanted that I would have bought a laptop with that in it already.

1 out of 5 eggsExcellent, but Flawed

Pros: It is a very powerful laptop, able to run any crytek engine game at full resolution, as long as it is plugged into the power supply. At first, I didn't understand the switchable graphics, but once I figured out how to make sure the computer turned on the AMD graphics card for video games, I was off to the races. It is capable of running any video game I've thrown at it, and shows no signs of losing that edge.

Cons: Durability and battery life are major problems. Two out of the three USB 2.0 ports will randomly stop working. The frame has cracked near the hinge on the screen side of the laptop. This crack has been caused just by moving around this laptop with the screen open. As in, you are sitting on the couch with the laptop in your lap, have to get up, so you set the laptop on the floor. Repeatedly doing this has caused a two inch long crack to form along the lid from the hinge up to the backside.

In addition, the battery life is very, very short. Even when it is not running any video games, and it is in economy mode, you will only get about an hour and a half life span out of the battery. If you run any video games at all, the battery life drops to as little as half an hour.

Other Thoughts: I really do love this laptop, but the crack has upset me greatly. There's no reason for it to crack in this fashion, and I wish this laptop had been more durable.

2 out of 5 eggsMX-70 DOA

Pros: -New Egg shipped this fast from City of Industry, CA to the east coast and it arrived 1 day early.
-MSI gave me an RMA to return the unit.
-MSI claims that the warranty doesn't expire when you remove the "Warrenty Void if removed sticker" on the bottom of the case. In order to change/upgrade your drive, memory, or network card you have to remove the cover. This cover also exposes the video card and CPU. MSI's phone tech support said that removing the panel and breaking the sticker won't void your warranty but their warranty won't cover items that you damage while you're in there or items that weren't originally included with your machine. I hope that this remains true since replacing an HDD with a SDD in addition to upgrading memory is a sure guarantee for anything sold as a gaming laptop.

Cons: -The LCD screen's backlight was INOP. No flash at startup, no flicker of light at any point during startup or on the BIOS screen, no response from brightness. I could still barely see the image on the screen if I shined a light just right on the nice anti-glare screen, so it's just the back light and not the videocard, connections, etc. There really is no glare when there's no backlight...nice!
-I connected an external monitor and the computer recognized it so I could troubleshoot. I've already got a desktop so I don't need to keep a laptop that's a desktop even though it's multi-monitor capable...not really the point.
-You have to pay to ship it back to MSI while under warranty.

Other Thoughts: -NewEgg would have accepted it back, of course but they do not replace OpenBox buys with an identical item and that's stated before you purchase. It was return it with postage paid to NewEgg (or Egg Head if you're old) or return it to MSI with your own postage to repair it and use it.

-So I chose to send it back to MSI's City of Industry, CA location which is exactly 0.8 miles down the road from NewEgg to get repaired vs waiting to get refunded and spend 30% more for a non-openbox buy. Would that one have worked? I'm sure that's what the guy/gal said about my computer before it was returned and resold.
-So why did I send it back vs return?: Because MSI said that I could upgrade/change out the the drive/memory/network card without voiding the warranty which corresponds to another reviewer's report; I have enough gadgets to keep me busy for a month while it's repaired; it's the one that I wanted and I got it for significantly less than full price under warranty; no 69th Level Warlock is going to take over the world while I don't have a laptop; and the only reason I 'had' to upgrade is because my old laptop's hangover to spilling Jack-n-Coke on it is permanent "O-F-F" mode.
-If all goes well and MSI returns a 5-star working laptop without hassle then I'll change my rating.

5 out of 5 eggsDon't believe everything you read

Pros: PROS:

Performance- Simulation software runs perfect

Features- Great customizable back-lit keyboard, non-reflective screen, inputs & outputs

Battery- 3 hours simulation life for a laptop--> (that is great)

Cons: CONS:

Weight- Hefty to haul around every day but I have gotten used to it

Size- same size as most 17.3" screens but quite thick (helps with keeping it cool)

Other Thoughts: I did a lot of research before making my purchase. I chose this computer rather than many other systems around the same price-point.

Here's why you shouldn't believe the lower reviews: Most of the other reviews talk about problems with the operating system, some of the pre-installed software, and very few hardware issues.

First off, if you don't know how to operate PC's (making internal tweaks to improve system performance), than this is not the computer for you; in fact--> get a Mac!! they are pre-configured for people just like you. If you do know how to operate PC's and are comfortable with navigating through BIOS and the OS then this may be the computer you want.

It does take some setup to maximize the performance. Out of the box, the computer comes basically set up for energy conservation and needs many tweaks throughout the OS and few in the BIOS. After making those tweaks, this thing runs BEAUTIFULLY!!! I love it.

I am not going to rant about AMD vs Intel--> there are blogs for that... make your decision based off of that. I will say though that I am a mechanical engineering student and I run simulation software on this and it outperforms the school-provided Intel I5-3550m powered desktops.

Hope this review helps you make your decision!!
Best Regards to MSI

5 out of 5 eggsNeeds Tender Care Forewarned

Pros: I owned this laptop since October and had my ups and downs with upgrading to Windows 8.1. Warning dual graphics card switching to and from APU to 8970m only certain games and programs support it! I knew purchasing this laptop was not a desktop replacement and not a ultimate gaming machine. For price, features and hardware specs its a great deal and I got it on sale for a cool $1000.

Cons: Blue screen of death crawls this laptop during reboot, first boot, resume from sleep and use of webcam. I have updated all my drivers for Windows 8.1 and BSOD still persists. The problem I dont like is that MSI basically locked out the BIOS and is Linux friendly. You can get into the Bios by pressing the Delete key as soon as you turn it on. Last note Killer Gaming Network is not wireless only Ethernet supported.

Other Thoughts: For my APU and 8970m GPU I use Drivers directly from AMD's website. DO NOT USE WINDOWS UPDATE TO INSTALL NEW DRIVER. It loads basic use of the hardware and limiting it to only necessity features.
I think overall its a great laptop.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop, few problems

Pros: This laptop is fantastic and has plenty high points. I bought this laptop for gaming, animation creation, 3d modeling, and music creation as well has programming in Visual Studios.

The GPU has handled every game I have thrown at it!
Planetside 2 High Graphics FPS (Min 25,Max 45) the min comes from the cpu, and only does so when loading areas. I have fine with max 45, but true FPS lovers may want 60 fps.. The max on this game does not really change even when settings set to low(read cons)

Skyrim (Min 35, Max 70) Ultra, 8 AA and 8 AS..What more could you want. Leave Detail Object fade checked!

Far Cry 3/Blood Dragon.. Both ( Min 25, Max40).This game suffers the same fate as PL2 Setting the GPU graphics to low don't matter to much(read Cons)

Civilization 5 High (min 30, max 60) the min represents when fully zoomed out, and it usually at 40, however, I did record a 30 at one point.

Anno 2070 ultra(min 30, max 50) Min comes from fully zoomed out

I have played many more games and used many applications to gauge temps, speeds, and FPS.. I get great performance out of Art rage 4, Photoshop, Blender 3d, FL Studio, and other software programs.

I was attracted to this PC for many reasons, one being the price ( it was on sale for 1000 and I got a 150 dollar rebate) so I only paid 850 for this beast, which was the stupidest steal ever!

Keyboard is great and has held out on WASD bashing. a few cons below!)

Speakers are great for laptop speaker, the sub add little, but a nice small thump when shootings guns, which is cool at least, sound blaster cinema adds a lot! but its software based the actual sound cars is not SB. The lights are great! but lose color when turned up full brightness.

The plastic is great and strong and the metal is great as well!

The fan is great at cooling, I bought a cooling pad that lowers heat by 8 degrees. I feel the fan turned up all the way might not be enough, I recommend a cooling pad, although that's just me!

Cons: The cons on this pc are small, but not knowing how to resolve these cons may ruin your experience with this beast.

GPU; the secondary GPU would not turn on at first, I had to play with ALL the power settings ( Power Management and AMD Catalyst program) Make sure you familiarize your self with these programs, they can save you hair!

This laptop likes to manage power. So you are playing a game to 60 FPS, you are in a large city, lots of polys and the GPU is at 70%..then you look at a door, your GPU goes to 20% and its clock speed goes down as well as CPU. when you look back at the city, you get lag for a few seconds.. This kill in online FPS, if you look at the ground while running(accident) when you look back up to shoot, u get lag and BOOM your dead. Make sure to play with power settings! ( doing so may shorten life, not my fault, do it on your own accord)

CPU seems to limit the GPU a lot, most min FPS come from bottleneck CPU.. You cant go into bios ( have tried, and I don't see an easy way)

Other Thoughts: I love this laptop. I play games comfortably at 30 FPS+, so this aspect does not bother me. I am an AMD Fan boy, so I was drawn to this laptop like flies on dung. I understand Intel is better, cooler, and more optimized, however; I just prefer AMD. Its cheaper and sometimes just as good..

4 out of 5 eggsupdate- issue out of box

Pros: Slick machine- powerful once you unlock it. Help desk replaced my issue out of the box laptop and I'm pleased with the results. I have upgraded to a solid state HD and using the original in the 2nd bay. **YOU HAVE TO UPDATE THE' VIDEO CARD DRIVER IN ORDER TO GET BETTER FPS- go to control panel, device manager, select video card AMD Radeon HD 8650G, right click & update driver! I play wow and I'm getting up to 100 fps while out questing, 50-70 fps doing 5 mans, and 30-40 fps in major cities with a lot of activity. Before I updated the driver I was only getting 10-20 fps max!

Cons: I would like to update to a processor but the socket is very limited. I hope they upgrade the series for this mobo.

4 out of 5 eggsUpdate on my previous Review

Pros: ****

Cons: ****

Other Thoughts: As I said in another review, this thing sometimes just freeze and refuses to boot, saying there's no booting device. Being too lazy to file an RMA, I did some search and find out that windows power configuration (I'm using win7) has one option: turn off hard drive after xxxxxx. the default is 20mins. I am almost sure that this is the reason why when I wake it from sleep, it will freeze, and doesn't even recognize it's OWN hdd while the system reboots. Change that setting to never turn HDD off, and there should be no problem. Maybe this is not a Win 7 compatible hard drive.

Yeah, I still hate where the warranty sticker is. I want dual channel mem......One egg off

1 out of 5 eggsIssue out of the box

Pros: Nice Lights, Laptop looks amazing.

Cons: Mouse and Keyboard didn't respond after turning it on for the first time. I had to plug in my own mouse for the mouse pointer to show up, and I had tried something I learned from other "bad mother board issues" from my past experience and closed the lid and reopened it for the keyboard to respond. Once I got through all the required windows 8 setup junk, I put the provided driver disk in and updated all the drivers. The mouse still didn't work. every time the laptop would restart I had to do the close the lid trick in order for the keyboard to respond. After the laptop was running the screen would go black and flicker. I called MSI tech support (after registering the product) and attempted to do a few things which resulted in the tech guy telling me to send it back cause and I'm quoting" something is messed up" because he was baffled that his very first "press the F3 repeatedly" when powering it on trick to reset the windows to default? didn't do what he expected it to do. Um yeah, cause the keyboard wasn't working! So right out of the gate the tech couldn't do anything for me. I called Newegg and requested a replacement like I was advised to do. I asked her if I was gong to get a new laptop, or will I be stuck with a used laptop for the price of a new one I just bought a few days prior. She told me that it depends on the test they do on the laptop to determine what I will get??? I will be pretty #$@!#@ off If I spent full price on a refurbished junk. It will effect my future relationship with both MSI and Newegg if I do. If I wanted a used junker with whatever baggage from the previous user(s), I would have bought it from #@$!!

3 out of 5 eggsNot bad but.....

Pros: Great performance/price ratio. At this price this might be the best rig you can get.. 8G DDR3 1600 mem taking only one slot provides the option to upgrade to 16G dual channel, unlike some model out there having 12G (8+4) installed (why??) Compared to GT70 which is the intel version, this has a VGA port which you will need if you are going to connect this to a projector and give a talk or presentation (GT70 doesn't have it). Also a BD drive could be useful. Good audio quality for a notebook.

Cons: Win 8 problem has been discussed in other comments. While you could install Win 7 on it, the screen brightness won't change after drivers are installed. Copy everything in other thoughts and past into txt, rename it as a .bat file (eg, brightness.bat). Run this file as administrator. Acknowledgement goes to filippo333 from UK on MSI forum.

Another BIG con is that the warranty sticker. There is no way you can upgrade HDD or mem without breaking it. My laptop had a bluescreen last week and refused to boot. After booting from CD there is NO hdd found. Hours later it can boot but do you expect me to trust that HDD? But I can not change it though I am aware that it might be faulty because that would void the warranty. I think at lease the hard drive should be easily accessible, preferably also are the mem slots. Most users would want to upgrade this single channel mem, and in my case, it is just a problematic hdd but I can not replace it, and I can not even send it back, since it still works now. This great limitation on upgrading cost one egg, and the faulty hard drive cost another. Is the manufacture around? How do I cope with this dilemma?

Also too heavy compare to GT70. But that wouldn't cost an egg, since weight is already listed here, buyers should know that.

HOT. AMD, you know.
