5 out of 5 eggsWorth The Buy

Pros: Build-solid layout location of keyboard lighting, button layout, port locations, and vents.
-air flow design is not designed for a you to have your laptop on with the lid closed. If this is something you do then this is not the laptop for you. Heat blows out at sides of computer while intake comes from above keyboard and front of laptop. The exhaust is nice to have come out the side for the reason that you can have someone sit across from you and not bother them with the heat.

Style- sleek and thin.
-It is compact, durable, and stable. You can take the laptop with you and not worry about whether you put it in your backpack or a duffle bag, the material that it is made with is durable and not cheap, though you may doubt it based on its weight.

Worth every penny

Cons: None.
Seriously, there are no cons because you truly get your money worth.
I did my homework and chose this for my youngest brother who is a heavy gamer.
He loves it and all his friends are all over it.
We have a friend who did a custom build and he loves it.

Other Thoughts: Easy to customize.
as far as storage space and ram that is.
Not much customization you would want to do with it otherwise.

1 out of 5 eggsHardware Issues

Pros: Great laptop in many ways. ok for the cost of the product when it was offered (which was about $1100), but it does have many problems emanating from bad design (see cons)

Cons: Filled with bloatware on arrival
Comes partitioned, with the OS partition not being large enough for updating the operating system.

I've owned it for 6 months now, and the keyboard letter "s", "z" and the space bar don't work or double type about 60% of the time. MSI support is nonexistent, which is why I would NEVER recommend this laptop to anyone or any MSI product. why buy something cheap which you will have to spend money on later to fix.

STAY AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Other Thoughts: STAY AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 eggsGreat computer...but

Pros: Fast. FAST...Dsiplay is nice...great keyboard and very versatile. Extremely professional finish.

Cons: Only one negative. Heat. It has dual fans but they exhaust out either side(the newer models exhaust through the floor of the computer)...this tends to heat up the surface of the computer. That drawback is nice however in the winter in a cold room.

2 out of 5 eggsNot satisified!

Pros: Case, screen, weight is good.

Cons: Backlite keyboard not worth it for night-time use. letters/#'s are not lit, just surrounding area. Still need an external light source.
Number key pad is not functioning properly. Have to try to fix it ASAP, or do an RMA. (Have been in hosp since it's arrival.)
HDD is very slow. Just as you would expect from a 5400rpm.
SSD not up to par.
Boot time = 26 seconds!!! Expected a lot better.
No optical drive. With a 17", would expect one.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We apologize that the product is not meeting your expectations.
- The 1TB HDD is a 5400RPM HDD for storage purposes.
- The SSD RAID 0 array provides 1061MB/s read and 785MB/s write in sequential mode.
- ODD is not included as advertised.

1 out of 5 eggstrouble the whole way through

Pros: nice specs, 1080P 17" screen, nice g. card, processor, and RAM better specs and performance than anything comparing pricewise for an ultra-lightweight and ultra-thin latop. Price was great too.

Cons: day one the left speaker did not work. I despised the trackpad. It is glitchy especially with some of the windows 8 gestures, but that what a wireless mouse is for.

won't stay asleep and wakes up in my backpack and without circulation it gets hot!

wireless card is glitchy: it keeps loosing the network and internet on every network I put it on: Work, school, home, and others.

The newest issue today. The screen turns on bcause you can see that the LCD screen is backlit, but no picture is delivered to the screen. After talking to MSI it is probably the graphics card and luckily it is still under warranty, but unfortunately it is outside the newegg's return policy.

Other Thoughts: MSI has probably lost a customer even if it is fixed, because I have to pay for shipping for a warrantied item, and overall I dislike the laptop build quality. (One example the footpegs come off very easy and I treat my stuff gingerly)

MY friend and I brought the same laptop within days of each other, so I thought I'd mention that he hasn't had any serious issues.

Like mine the trackpad stinks, but we both use a wireless mouse so who cares.

Like mine, his GS70 looses the network from time to time, but his does not seem to be nearly as bad as mine.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop

Pros: Great laptop overall - packaged very nicely. Bootup time was in seconds only. Only thing is that it came with windows 8 which I installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64 over it right after I unboxed it. You will need to change the bIos to Legacy mode if you want to have it work in Win 7.

Cons: LIke every other reviews - touchpad is blah.....but i use a external keyboard and mouse anyway so it doesnt matter to me.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Well built and lite. I like the medal casing and not the plastic which tends to bend. The keyboard seems it can take abuse and typing is no issue (for a laptop) and has the number pad on the side. As far as gaming, it can handle almost anything you throw at it with high graphics, in fact, I was fooling around and had 2 games running simultaneously and there was no lagging. The cooling system seems good, although it does get hot, you would expect that from intense graphics. Basically it runs smooth.

Cons: Windows 8. I see windows 8 for more of a touch screen operating system and does not belong on this machine, but it's the latest OS so they throw it in there. I would delete it but having issue booting with the USB to get windows 7 on (No CD rom dirve which isn't a bad thing).
Blotware. Again I would delete the entire HD, but having issues with the bootable USB and if I decide to keep windows 8, I would need to go through every program and delete what isn't necessary.
Mouse Pad. I knew the buying the machine, but just to reiterate it is a bit funky because the sensor to move the mouse is over where you click the mouse button and if you're using to fingers to accomplish this, for example, the website you are browsing will zoom in or out. Not huge issue though because this is a gaming rig and, well, gaming you use an actual mouse.
Just a minor thing, where the plug in for the power outlet is, the wire naturally goes across the heat vent so it can block the heat coming out. You can easily move it but it is something to mention.

Other Thoughts: I've only had this rig for 2 weeks and so far I'm satisfied. The real test is one year of having it. The case was a bit disappointing, I was hoping for a handle and pockets to fit the power supply and other accessories in, but does protect the laptop fairly well, in that, I can put it in a backpack. It does become hot on the top half of the keyboard but I see this as unavoidable when running games. I gave this 4 eggs for the performance it puts out on such a lite weight machine and they did a lot of good things. But the blotware and windows 8 really get under my skin. I'm going to do more research into loading windows 7 with the USB but I've had many failed attempts for some reason or another (probably because the programs I'm using, but I never discount that they try to prevent you from doing this by making it difficult).
For reference I got the 860M graphics which only comes with the 15" screen, 12 GB ram, SSD (naturally) and the rest is the same.

5 out of 5 eggsThis laptop has everything you will need

Pros: Dell Inspiron (17R i17RM-8389sLV) 17.3-Inch Laptop is a great laptop for 1,299. I was in the market for a great laptop and this one definitely fits the bill. This laptop is lightweight and thinner than previous versions of the Dell Inspiron. Once you boot up this device you will notice right away the sharp images this laptop can display. The screen is large (17.3") and will allow you to do anything you could do on a desktop. The screen displays at 1920 x 1080 HD. This laptop is filled with many more great features. I have listed a few that I felt were important for you to know before making a purchase. They are as follows:

• Processor: Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz)
• Display: LCD 17.3" HD
• Memory (RAM): 12GB Memory
• Storage (hard drive): 500GB HDD (More than enough space)
• Optical Drive: Tray load DVD Drive

Again I think you will love this laptop like I do and I would definitely recommend it.

Thank you for reading my review, if this review was helpful please click yes below it goes a long way.

Cons: Windows 8 can be a bit confusing for some users.

4 out of 5 eggsGS70 2OD-229US

Pros: 5 Second Boot
Speed
Sleek External Design
Price to Power ratio
It's really cool.
Big screen.

Cons: TrackPad (Not as bad as everyone says, but not awesome)
Windows 8 (Not the Laptops Fault)

Full keyboard isn't backlit.... The left side tab, caps, shift and ctrl aren't being lit like the toerhs, same with the right side number pad.... I'm not sure if it's defect or settings or design... sent a tech support form in and waiting to hear back from MSI...
I haven't read good things about their support sooo... who knows...

Their website also only has the 001 and 002 models listed with links to special stuff... like DRIVERS.
The 229 model (with it's measily 12GB DDR3 and 500GB HDD is apparently the disregarded ba***rd of the family. Hopefully I get some response from them soon.

Other Thoughts: That being said. I LOVE THIS THING. My first motherboard as a kid was MSI and I beat it up for 10 years before it gave out... I'm hoping to get the same kind of durability out of this thing. It's a little big to be a daily portable laptop... not sure if I'll be carrying it to Law School or not we will see.... but I will definitely recommend it.

OPEN BOX. I Got Everything with it, can't say anything is missing at all.

P.S. If you register product and take a survey you get a 3 mo extension on warranty from MSI

5 out of 5 eggsNot just a great gaming notebook

Pros: 1) Light & thin with a pretty brushed alloy surface and pleasant looking logo.

2) Keyboard has a great feel and has a very customizable backlight.

3) The screen is super sharp, does not glare, has good viewing angles and colors.

4) super fast & snappy.

5) better specs than the blade or mPro at 2/3's the price.

Fantastic sound for a laptop and the killer network card in here is super. Don't really care much about geforce graphics but its fast. Miss my Radeon 2D color quality.

Cons: Have to press the space bar at the right spot for it to hit. Not too big a deal considering I use a mechanical keyboard for gaming. Track pad is also bad for a high end notebook. Its stiff and seems unresponsive. Again not a big deal considering I use a gaming mouse. Just gets annoying when I have the thing actually on my lap browsing the web

Windows 8 ugh. Not the laptops fault.
.

Other Thoughts: Just an FYI. MSI loads the OS on the SSD. Kudos to them for that. Thing boots up in 3 seconds (after I tweaked what programs load). Other notebooks out there that cost more with less specs. If you ask me, MSI is the best deal right now for gamers. But it is also a good notebook for anything. Plays starcraft 2 just fine for me which is all I play.
