1 out of 5 eggsNice looking, ok performance, bad support

Pros: Nice looking; fair performance for the price (~$120 before rebate when bought in February, 2014). Good experience when it works.

Cons: Unstable WiFi connection in shipped O/S (Andriod 4.2.2); manufacture's online support page is confusing; tablet is easily to be bricked; just because pushing the power button in the middle of low power auto shutdown; short warranty period; expensive out-of-warranty service charge.

Other Thoughts: Based on my past very happy experience with MSI notebook when I was in Asia, I bought this Primo 81 tablet in Feb. 2014.
Now I am totally turned off on any MSI product.

Except for the WiFi connection problem, I have had quite good experience for 12 months on this tablet. I saw the Andriod 4.4 upgrade in MSI's product support page and decided to try in early 2015. Then I found multiple support pages of this Primo 81 which different URLs. Some of them even contains broken URLs. Finally I found one page have both instructions and
the OS upgrade zip file available. The upgrade went smoothly and is exactly matched with steps in instructions. This Primo 81 was successfully upgraded to Andriod 4.4. WiFi becomes very
stable after the upgrade. I was very happy and thinking to enjoy it more.

Three weeks after the upgrade, in one occation when this tablet was in the middle of its 4%-low-power-auto-shutdown, the power button was pushed. Screen went dark as usual. But there is no response when plugging in to charge hence no way to know whether it is accepting the charge. No response to the normal push to power button. No response to the 8-second long push power button to reset as described in its manual. The tablet is bricked.

I think the only solution is to somehow enter the manufacture reset mode by pushing the power and volume +/- buttons
in certain sequence so filed a request in MSI's support page. The response came in on time to direct me to a FAQ page describing the 8-second power button reset. I tried it again and replied it didn't work. Got the response to explain out-of-warranty diagnostic/service process, starting from an expensive $69 diagnostic charge (over the phone, I assume). Given this amount and the possible follow-up "repairing" charge, I would rather to invest to buy a newer, current model instead.

I am quite disappointed to MSI now. And NO, I won't consider another MSI tablet nor other product due to this bad experience.

1 out of 5 eggsVery slow, sluggish, poor screen quality

Pros: The exterior design looks great. As soon as you turn on the tablet it's all down hill from there.

Cons: Unbelievably bad screen quality. Yes it shares the same screen as the original ipad mini, but that screen was awful and so is this one. I had forgotten how bad and low quality the ipad mini screen was until I bought this tablet. It's really a deal breaker.

This tablet is also very slow. Its very sluggish and laggy and I just couldn't bear it.

2 out of 5 eggsGood for the price

Pros: Low cost, connectivity, memory, android

Cons: headphone connection doe not work with mic integrated OMPT standard as listed in specs. Contacted MSI and after multiple factory resets and firmware upgrade, the answer was use a three segment headphone jack. This was disappointing since it didn't match the advertised specification. Unit speaker provides poor sound quality with built in single speaker.

Other Thoughts: MSI site provided a firmware upgrade download which was great. The upgrade process was easy to follow with good instructions. The only issue was it had to be repeated several times before the upgrade actually went through. Almost thought I had bricked the tablet. There does not appear to be an over the air upgrade option.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat for the intended purpose

Pros: Screen is bright and vibrant (and I hear the exact panel the ipad mini uses). 8 inch size is maybe the perfect size for both movies and games like clash of clans. Unit is light, nearly identical in size to the ipad mini. Runs apps really well, but some apps are not available that I would have expected. I left stock Android 4.2 on the device.

Cons: Speaker is quiet, tin-y and would not be good in any room that is not quiet. The front and back cameras are pretty bad. You could maybe skype with them if you did not care about video quality. Construction quality is pretty garbage. There is a seam all around the front where the from plate is connected to the rest of the device, and it is a wide enough seam that I can see light through it from the back light. Battery life is smaller than many tablets, probably between 5 and 7 hours depending on use. As a loose test, I turned on airplane mode at 90% and watched the first two Bourne movies back to back, and it has 23% by the end of that. Food for thought.

Other Thoughts: I bought this for one purpose: entertainment on airplanes. I gave it 4 stars because for this purpose, I do not need the cameras or speakers. The lack of a single star is for the battery life and build quality.

Were I intending to use this product for a broader range of purposes, that would require a speaker or cameras or longer battery life, I would give it 2-3 stars. Also, I would not pay more than $70 for this device.

4 out of 5 eggsNot bad, once you update it

Pros: Great screen, very clear. Nice size, lightweight. Has MicroSD and MiniHDMI ports!

Cons: Battery life is Meh.
Included AC adapter is a universal plug type and had issues with it (intermittent and slow charging). But I have tons of Micro USB chargers, you probably do too.
Had all kinds of app problems (apps wouldn't install right, would go into loops and LA-LA land, apps crashing, etc) until I updated to the newest Android update / Kitkat. See below.

Other Thoughts: First thing out of the box, charge it up (mine came with a totally dead battery). The included AC adapter is kind of flaky, I used my phone charger.

Once charged up a bit, do this android update FIRST! Follow the instructions.

Once I updated android, all my app problems went away. Good thing too, this puppy almost got returned for refund.

3 out of 5 eggsMSI and the epitome of mediocrity.

Pros: LG made screen module (exact unit from ipad mini)
very responsive non-glare screen
snappy quad core processor
host USB port allowing for keyboard/mouse/USB flash (a rarity amongst tablets)
Overall sense of solid build and quality fit and finish (no body flex, aluminum back panel, button feedback, etc.)
Ipad mini screen protectors feet except have button cutout for nothing.

Cons: Very grainy camera, bad color, texture , etc. Unacceptable
Speaker distorts at even medium volumes and is dramatically outperformed by a "mini stereo with foldable jack" that I picked up from my local dollar store.
lastly there's a thumbprint sized shadow where the screen is noticably darker, especially moreso in increases brightness settings, just below the camera location, most likely pressure induced land not yet brought to the manufacturers attention.
Screen occasionally flashes

Other Thoughts: Sadly, what easily would have been the best tablet value on the US market is ruined by a couple of bad decisions and poor quality control...

5 out of 5 eggsvery nice tablet - happy camper here

Pros: This is a good looking tablet and a great value for the price. I mean c'mon, the price is extremely good for a good quality build android device. The size is perfect, can even fit in my jacket pocket. Beautiful screen and responsive touch - I am a happy camper.

Cons: Would be nice if it came with a protective case.

1 out of 5 eggsMay look like the real thing but it’s not.

Pros: Looks nice

Cons: Well having two MSI Primo 73’s tablets (for the kids) I figured I would treat myself to this one. After all it looks just like the big “A”s product at a much more attractive price. However I can confirm it’s nothing like the iPad mini at all, its WIFI performance is dismal big time/huge let down perhaps the worst I have used.

Screen smudges super easy and it can get quite bad no coatings on this one, glare is also quite bad too. Speaker is a joke, my cell phone has a better speaker and that’s not saying much about my cell phone. With a speaker like this it’s not even worth mentioning the device even has one, and yes it’s that bad.

Using the tablet applications seem to load nicely but not all some freeze, when surfing on the net connect to WIFI pages are slow to load, vides even slower. Battery performance seem good can’t say anything negative about that.

Other Thoughts: Based on the poor WIFI performance, lousy speaker, horrible smudge soaking screen I would not recommend this to anyone at $169 it grossly overpriced get a Samsung or an iPad you will be glad you did. Having two MSI Primo 73’s and this 81 I can confirm they all perform about the same less than average with the Primp 73 it’s acceptable because little kids use them but the 81’s performance is just not wroth the price.

1 out of 5 eggsSemi-DOA

Pros: None that we've seen yet

Cons: Ordered this via Newegg for my grandmother for christmas. She took it home, charged it to 100% and then turned it on. It came up and displayed the MSI welcome screen, then nothing. It all went blank. Contacting Newegg today to try and get a replacement. Will then edit review.
