2 out of 5 eggsDont Buy

Pros: This Laptop has great specs, it has a good graphics card, a good cpu, plenty of ram and vram. Runs great when its cool.

Cons: HEAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not only is it hot but it throttles its graphics after about 25 minutes of playing games. Once it hits about 92c expect significant fps losses as it tries to lower its performance and cool off. I mean like 20-30 fps loss. The single fan cooling both the cpu and gpu do not work well enough for a product of this price.

Other Thoughts: If you want to play games look elsewhere

1 out of 5 eggsSCAM

Pros: Works flawlessly for 30 days

Cons: First off, a green vertical line on the right side on my monitor covering 1/4 of the whole monitor appears 30 days after purchase and the line is on all the time. During bios, windows and even when the computer is off indicating the monitor is damaged. The problem is that the warranty states that they are not responsible for monitor problems after 30 days, how convenient.
Second, they ignore my calls and e-mails, I have called hundreds of times and NO ONE picks up. Another trick is forcing you to register the product in 30 days of purchase in order to provide technical support for laptops but the product coding required does not work. Multiple codes and attempts were done to no avail.
3 months later I am experiencing problems with overheating and a faulty sound card in which the built in speakers and any external speakers/headphones connected to the PC give off static.
This is clearly not supposed to happen to a new laptop and is a clear sign of poor quality.

Other Thoughts: I will never buy anything from MSI ever again and advise everyone to avoid this company.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,
Based on the symptom you reported, we suggest you checking following steps below since many reasons can cause the situation like this ,

4 out of 5 eggsAwesome gaming computer

Pros: 1) Super fast.
2) The game I play is SC2 and LOL. It works perfectly without any problem in Ultra Setting(No frame down)
3) You can adjust your keyboard light to different color
4) It was upgraded to 4810MQ (2.8GHz) instead of 4800MQ(2.7 GHz)
5) Overall I love it. Much better than asus I had for few days.

Cons: Heat
Just like other people, the heat is a bit matter. When you play a game or do something that requires graphic card, the temperature rises up like to 70 degree. Highest it ever reached was 71 for me. It's not as bad as like you cannot touch it, but rather like a human body temperature.
Loud Fan
There's a feature where you can speed up your fan 3 times faster and make RPM 1700 to 5000. It helps a lot to cool down your laptop but it feels like a jet engine.
Little tricky to replace more Ram
There's two empty Ram slot but it's UNDER the cooling system. A copper rod(or stick whatever it's called) that's used for transfering heat to fan is blocking half way through so you gotta be careful when you replace more Ram. Replacing additional SSD was piece of cake. You just stick in, screw it and done!

Other Thoughts: I replaced 16GB ram and 480GB Sandisk SSD on this machine and it works perfect. There's warrant void sticker on one of the screw. I called MSI and asked it warrant will be voided for replacing more parts. Their answer was that in US, MSI don't enforce that warrant void. In other words, if you live in US, they dont care about that sticker when it comes to wararnty. When your computer is causing a problem and sent to MSI, they will only check original parts. Of course they are not responsible for parts added to system.

5 out of 5 eggsMSI GT Series GT70 DominatorPro-890 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4800MQ (2.70GHz) 12GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M 8GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: First thoughts- This laptop is amazing! It has run everything I have thrown at it, at high or ultra graphics settings! This is my first gaming laptop and I am very impressed with the features. Runs Skyrim with all the 2k texture packs easily at 60FPS and looks fantastic. Watchdogs runs at Ultra around 40-55. Guild Wars 2 runs 60 90% of the time, with drops down 45 in heavily crowded areas.

Bonus upgrade- My laptop came with the 4810 i7 which was a nice surprise, which I have also read the same reviews of others laptops coming installed with the same.

Bluray writable drive

Price- for the money, this is the best laptop you can get. It doesn't come with a SSD, or boat loads of Ram, but both of which are upgradable. It has 3 slots for SSD, and up to 32GB ram. Best bang for your buck! Definitely considering that the ASUS version of this laptop is 2,250$, and comes with a less powerful CPU.

Cooling- The cooler boost 2 works very well, when I start playing a high demand game, I simply turn it on. Yes, it is loud, but your buying a laptop. Yes the fan is within feet of earshot. Get over it. I have only hit the 93C limit a few times, with out a cooling pad. It mostly stays in the 70C-85C range.

Battery- You can watch or surf the web for up to 4 hours on a charge, not to bad. Has different power modes that are on the function keys, makes it easy to switch between the different options.

Speakers- They are very clear, and sound great when turned up.

Webcam- 720p and looks great. No complaints there.

Screen- Great for sitting in bright or sunlit rooms. The "matte" screen does great at not showing reflection. Full HD, looks good when gaming.

Cons: Nothing yet. Will update if/when something happens.

Other Thoughts: Overall great laptop. Started playing games on it right away, and they were running at a very low frame rate. (Skyrim 25fps Ultra) All I had to do was update GPU and CPU drivers, and update BIOS. Which I should have done first, but oh well. Ran amazing after that!

Also, payed the 3$ for Newegg to expedite order processing, and it shipped the same day. I was very pleased with this.

MSI's rebates are very easy to accomplish, and the instructions are clearly written on their website. Not an overbearing amount of hoops to jump through for 100$.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Impressive!

Pros: I was looking for a system that I could take with me on trips, overnight stays, etc. that would allow for me to make good use of my steam library. This thing does not disappoint in any way.

I have a pretty solid Windows 7 desktop (i5-2500k, Radeon HD 7970). I have been gaming on it for the last few years. I was always skeptical of the performance prowess of notebook gaming machines, but my mind has been changed.

While obviously not quite as powerful as the OC'd 7970, this thing absolutely holds its own on the latest and greatest games. Watch_Dogs was included with the purchase (though I already owned it for PS4), and it looks fantastic, and runs pretty darn well.

The keyboard is fantastic, and the track pad (while small) is excellent.

The build of the system is solid as can be, and I'm incredibly impressed with how solid it is.

The Dynaudio speakers also do a great job. They're plenty loud, even with the cooling fan at full spin.

Cons: This isn't a concern for me, but the system is obviously a bit on the large side. That said, it's not really much bigger than any other 17.3'' laptop.

Other Thoughts: This is a very safe purchase. For the price, the specs are incredible, and the performance is remarkable.
I think it's a solid bet, and I would absolutely make this purchase again.

5 out of 5 eggsBig, Quiet Gaming Powerhouse

Pros: Great gaming system. Beautiful 17" display. 2x 2.5" drive bays for future expansion. The installed 1TB drive is 7200 rpm instead of the slower 5400 rpm drives so many manufacturers use. Came with BD-RE drive for creating Blu-ray movies standard. I can now play Company of Heroes 2 on high settings instead of medium without any lag. Fan is relatively quiet, much more so than the GE60 it replaced. $100 rebate was promptly processed and tracking provided.

Cons: As nice as the system is there are a few gotchas you should be aware of. 1.) the included ram is mounted under the keyboard and requires a bit of surgery to get to. 2.) the 2 free ram slots that are available once you remove the bottom access panel are obstructed by the heatpipe for the GPU/CPU. You get one module in without removing the pipe but that's it. 3.) There are no mSATA slots. This was particularly disappointing since I was coming from a MSI GE60 which had 2x mSATA slots in addition to the single 2.5" drive bay. The GT70 only include mSATA if you but it configured with mSATA drives. This lack of easy expansion in such a thick laptop was puzzling.

Other Thoughts: I was able to take my 1TB mSATA drive from the GE60 and install it into a 2.5" adapter and have it boot immediately. Once I used a USB stick to copy over drivers from the different WiFi card and was able to get online to update any other drivers the system was up and running and the original HDD was filed away until I put it back in for eventual sale next year when I upgrade . All in all a nice machine but really wished the various components could be more easily accessed and that mSATA was included as a standard.

5 out of 5 eggsRE: Dominator pro 890

Pros: Read other Thoughts

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: This is an update to my previous review. i have now played some more intense games. Skyrim will not move from 60fps fully maxed with mods. as will ESO. this laptop does get pretty hot the peak temp ive seen is 86C. I would still recommend to anyone and everyone.

5 out of 5 eggsMSI GT70 Dominator Pro 890 Gaming machine/workstation

Pros: Best price/performance you can get
Solid build
Great keyboard (quality wise, colors are neat but wish there was just white)
Speakers aren't loud loud but very clear while loud (my asus g750 was louder but after 3/4 not very clear, msi only gets to that 3/4 but is 100% clear)
Programmable keys are really useful
All the 'bloatware' that comes with. Eats up some resources yes, but they give you more than you could ever use.

Oh, and this things upgradable up the wazoo.

quick buttons above the keyboard are a very welcome addition, as well as the turbo fan when you need it, that was ingenious and makes the single fan work that extra bit when you really need it.
Speaking of single fan 13v, spins slower moves more air than dual smaller fans 2x5v. But it does get loud under max gpu load, and audible while gaming.
Gpu throttles while heavy gaming, runs 80% time at 989mhz, 10% at 920mhz, and 10% time 840mhz. but gpu boost is 989mhz, stock 920mhz for reference. Hasn't effected gameplay yet.

Cons: Battery life while gaming 60 min, battery life while office use 4 hours. The 60 min is category average, but asus g750 and alienware 17 managed to get over 5 hours of office battery.

Backlight keyboard is software controlled, meaning the software must fully load before the backlight comes on (meaning its dark until your fully into windows). The alienware somehow managed to get it loaded right away, asus g750 is on as soon power is applied.

Trackpad is small, I'm the kind of guy who needs a trackpad. I also came to use all the windows 8 gesteres which are almost all non-usable on this trackpad.

The bottom is full of vents, so cant use on your lap without blocking the much needed airflow.

Single fan design means its got its work cut out, and is loud under full gpu load, audible while gaming, and prolonged gaming increases temps the longer you game, throttles under heavy load, loosing performance.

But this said, the components are the best you can get, and there isnt a laptop out there that can calm the 880m yet, alienware and asus try and make it a little better, but theyre still not perfect either.

Im sure you knew this going in, but laptop weighs 8lbs, cant say its a pro, cant say I didn't know that fact coming in, but it is a con. That said, its the best laptop components you can get, and they need all the airflow they can get.

Other Thoughts: I went through many laptops before this one, wrote a review which was cut in half I guess, so im remaking a new one.

Coming from the Asus G750, the MSI had a lot of work cut out to prove it better. And, while the quality, keyboard, cooling system, trackpad, and battery weren't up to the Asus top notch quality. The MSI does give its own exceptional areas which in my book make it my laptop. Also, the Asus couldn't cool the CPU enough while rendering to stop thermal throttling at 100c (went through 7 Asus laptops all the same). The msi without turbo fan 85c, with turbo fan 75c.

I play video games yes, but workstation is what I really bought this for. I have a $3000 beast custom built laptop which can more than play games on. I needed a 3d rendering/4k video editing machine on the go. And that's what I got.

Received this laptop with a i7 4810 cpu, which was just icing on the cake.

First thing I did was use burn recovery and swapped in my 1tb Samsung evo. While I had bottom cover off, I added another 2x8gb sticks of ram, and swaped out the thermal paste on the cpu/gpu (took 20 min tops). I used antech formula 7 diamond, see about a 5-10c difference on cpu at full load, and gpu still hits 93c limit, but far less often. Yes, you have to break warranty sticker to open bottom, but I called MSI tech support 3 times, and they said every time that as long as I don't physically damage the laptop while opening it up, the warranty is still good.
Using sony vegas pro 13, this thing is a beast. If you have a specific question on it I think you can post a question and I will answer.

Gaming wise, this laptop is unstoppable. Again, specific questions, just ask. But Almost every game, max settings and minimal dips if any under 60 fps. That's, titanfall, bf4, cod ghosts, Borderlands 2, just everything. Crysis 3 and AC BF were the only games that max settings ran 35-45fps,
but there was no lag or glitch in any game ive played.
Fans and nosie
Turbo fan, yes its loud. To put it easily, lets say your bathroom is next to livingroom, someone in the bathroom is blow drying hair. Best way to put it, if you have a tv on in the livingroom drowning out some of the noise, its just like that with the laptop.
Gaming fan, while not turbo fan, it is audible in a 'quiet' room, and barely noticeable in normal room. But every 20ish seconds it ramps up just a notch for like 5 seconds then back down.
Rendering fan, barely noticeable in a 'quiet' room, normal room you cant even hear it.
Idle fan, barely barely noticeable in 'quiet' room, normal room cant even hear.
'quiet' room - bedroom at 10pm, no tv, windows closed, nothing
'normal room' - livingroom at noon, no tv on, windows open, maybe a bird chirping in background

When is turbo fan needed/does it do anything?
Turbo fan isn't needed, as fan curve is great, and max fans under fan curve slower than turbo fan. When gaming, cpu 65c gpu 85c (turbo fan cpu 60c gpu 80c). While rendering, cpu 85c gpu 65c (turbo

5 out of 5 eggsMSI GT70 Dominator Pro 890

Pros: Components, Price/performance, average battery, speakers, keyboard, boost fan cooling

Cons: boost fan fan noise, still 8lbs but worth it

Other Thoughts: Review MSI GT70 Dominator Pro 890
-My laptop purchasing experience -
First thing, I have over the past 6 months gone through over 10 laptops trying to find ‘THE ONE’. This all started at Best, eventually led to Ama, and finished at New.
Starting with the Asus G750JX from last year (current year when purchased). I really liked the laptop, but it was heavier than I had originally wanted, and battery life was around 2.5-3 hours. But I had my eye on the Samsung ativ book 8. So I exchanged the ASUS for the Samsung.
The Samsung was light, 8 hours of battery, slim, touch screen, i7 and discrete video chip. Just great. But while rendering, I was getting insane heats, which ultimately lead to frying several core components and leaving the laptop unusable.
After the Samsung, I went and spent $2500 on the MacBook pro retina with discrete graphics. I was trying to stay under $1500, but figured if I wanted the best, I had to pay for the best. Well, the apple boot loaded to windows, was pretty much just a better build Samsung at twice the cost. While rendering, heats got unbearable, horribly throttled, and laptop felt like a frying pan.
When having these troubles with the apple, Asus came out with the newer versions of the G750, with the 800 series graphics and optimus which almost doubled the battery life. I figured, weight wise id have to deal with if I wanted the cooling I needed, and the battery complaint vs my first ASUS was now fixed. So I started off with the JM series with 860m. Overall awesome laptop, everything was just quality, top notch. While gaming, temps were cool, fans were quiet, and it was just awesome. But while rendering, CPU temps easily got to 100c and the computer throttled the CPU to cool it down. Which is great, but every throttle during rendering, led to my final rendered video having a glitch or artifact of some sort every time it throttled. Which was about 100 times during an hour movie. Brought it back and exchanged it for the same model. (I really liked/like the ASUS). Next laptop same thing, so exchanged it for same model again. Same thing.
So I returned for money back, and went to ama. Thinking maybe best - buy models were all of same shipment, maybe something wrong with that production line. So went and stepped up to the JS model on ama. Which was awesome, bought at 5pm, and paid $10 for next day shipping, had by noon the very next day. Just wow ama.
The new ama purchased JS series I immediately ran stress tests instead of downloading and installing all my programs to figure out the heating issues. Well the first JS laptop excelled. Reached around 90c, still warm but 10c away from throttling. I though, just great. Within a few weeks, temps were back to 100c and throttling. So I called ama, and they sent out another one for replacement. I received next day and had 30 days to return mine via provided USPS prepaid shipping box. Again, ama, awesome.
The very first thing I did again, was stress test 100% CPU, and temps w

Pros: Fast, Superfast! This laptop comes with the i7 4810mq not the 4800mq. which is a 2.8ghz processor vs the 2.7. 8gbs vram?!? I dont think anything can utilize even half of that. I love the steel-series keyboard! The lights are cool and its super comfortable to type on. Decent Battery life.

Cons: Gets kinda warm. Just use the fan boost every once in a while. The stock Hdd bottlenecks this laptop a little.(I bought a samsung 840 evo for it) ultra fast. Really no serious complaints.

Other Thoughts: i can run minecraft completely maxed out with optifine at 60 fps and i can go to about 80 if i turn off the fps limiter.

I haven't played any graphically intense games yet. I will update when i do.

I have owned this laptop for about a month i will update this review if i find any problems.
