5 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop; awful customer service

This review is from: MSI GE Series GE70 Apache Pro-012 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: This laptop has amazing everything. I love the keyboard, speakers, low noise (even when the fan is high), screen is almost too bright haha. So much about this product is amazingly crafted and well thought out.

Cons: There are only 2 things that I have found that I dislike. One being a small thing, the right side shift key. It is smaller than most to fit the keypad I would assume. It does take some getting used to.

The other thing is MSI's tech support. First off I would like to say that at the time of this review there is a page on MSI's website that says that you can break the warranty sticker on the back and NOT void your warranty as long as you do not break anything (which was helpful information to someone who was wanting to upgrade to an SSD). The bad thing about this laptop is MSI's customer service.

I had received this laptop with a broken battery casing (meaning that the battery is fully functional but the case that makes it fit flush with the laptop case was broken), the battery did not fit flush up against the laptop and there was visibly a piece that had cracked off and was missing.

I contacted MSI 3 times. The first time I got a gentleman who said that the warranty does not cover the battery (even though I only received the laptop 3 days prior and it was that way out of the box). So I asked to speak to a supervisor who ended up being 'at lunch' and I left my phone number and asked for him to give me a call in the next 2 hours. I never received a call back and after 3 hours of waiting I called again.

The second person told me that if I wanted them to help me I needed to register my product (which had a million questions about myself and why I chose the laptop I did) and proceeded to usher me off the phone as quick as possible.

The third person that I had talked to was at first disagreeing with me on how the battery was broken and I explained that Newegg would return it if he couldn't get me a battery and that they would be getting it back and lose money on it selling it as refurbished or whatever (I am the assistant manager of a major retailer so I know how this stuff works). The gentleman then agreed that they could take the battery back and exchange it for a new one.

I would think for someone who just spent 1300 dollars on your product that you would be a little more willing to help them out.

Other Thoughts: This laptop is amazing. I have not seen a speck of lag in anything I throw at it (ie Battlefield 4 on Ultra settings). If you are confident that you won't need to worry about dealing with MSI customer service, I would say go for it. Just be careful purchasing from them because they literally will find something to be able to tell you no if they can.

2 out of 5 eggsUpdated Review 3 Months In

This review is from: MSI GE Series GE70 Apache Pro-012 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Fast PC
Fast Graphics
Ability to Easily add 2 SSDs (mSATA)
Great Keyboard

Cons: Design Flaw with Power Config
Wif Fi Drops Out with Heavy GPU Use (Power Issue)
Runs REALLY Hot. I mean burn your leg hot.
HD is in 2 partitions as shipped (Hate that)
The machine does not have enough power to run with the current components as configured.

Other Thoughts: I originally gave this a 4 star review afer a couple weeks of ownership but reported issue with Wif Fi Dropping out. When I say dropping out, I mean losing connection over and over. Yesterday during a 2 hour play session, I lost connection more than a dozen times. I am writing this today on my old Acer notebook and have not had anything other than 5 bars for the last 3 hours; same network and same chair in front of the TV....

I have tried everything to remedy this..

I am finally convinced the problem is power-related. When the GPU is at high use, the wif fi drops out. Turning off bluetooth helps as does throttling the wi-fi connection. MSI support has been non-existent and there are many posts on the topic. If I am right, the problem isn't fixable. If you plan to play with an Ethernet cable, you'll never have an issue. You won't have a problem just using Intel HD Graphics either. If you actually want to use the note book to play high quality games in a wif fi setting, you are going to be very upset. Strongly recommend you look elsewhere. I wish I had. Based on how the company has addressed this, it will be my first and last MSI product,

2 out of 5 eggsJunk

This review is from: MSI GE Series GE70 Apache Pro-012 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Worked great for the 1month it worked. Handled games at decent settings with multiple windows open and streaming.

Cons: After one month the fan starting making horrible noises and the computer stopped functioning well (wouldn't open team speak without locking up, wouldn't open dragon gaming center, wouldn't open basic programs). After being told by tech support to "blow air into the vents" they are allowing me to send it to the for repair. 1month old and I have to pay to ship the computer in, which they say they can keep for 25days + shipping. This is my only computer at home, so they are expecting me to be computerless for a month on my dime. Disgusting.

Other Thoughts: It's a shame. I saved up to purchase this gaming laptop. I wish I would have went with a brand I have more confidence in.

4 out of 5 eggsReally really nice.

This review is from: MSI GE Series GE70 Apache Pro-012 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Good computer. Nice but not so bright keyboard backlight.
Comes with minimal bloatwear (any bloatwear is pretty well manageable, like your SCM system which changes your power by pressing a keyboard set). It's really nice, comes with a nice driver disk. I'm using the computer as a development computer so I can make heavy duty programs and still debug on the side. Maybe even graphics processing. As stress test, I tried out a few games. Can run a lot of modern games really well, but on low settings (watch_dogs low is 60 fps+, high is 30), but with some it plays really nicely (Star Citizen Alpha 60fps max settings) so it has a pretty nice card. It also comes with an integrated chip as well (Intel HD Graphics 4600) which was not expected. Also has a very nice matte display, and it's noticeable as well. Speakers are beautiful, and the built in mic actually cancels out anything that isn't you pretty well, so VoIP like skype is really nice, even without a headset. On the other hand, it has gold 4 usb's, one is flipped and has a plug under it showing that is the "super charger" but I don't really have a need to use it. A cooling pad is hit or miss, but I haven't exactly required one to keep it cool. Processor and ram wise, it is great. Really couldn't of asked for a better computer, compared to alienwares and their boxy design, I'd pick this over any of them with such a slim chassis. Windows 8.1 is pre-installed and it functions well compared to 7 (dual booted, and in comparison, windows 8.1 plays a lot better than 7) I suggest getting use to it, because in all reality it does beat 7 any day. Start screen might be a pain, but after understanding it's the same thing, then it actually is quite nice because built in mail client.
There is a very nice start of computer program that tells if you would rather use chrome or IE, or set the desktop as boot default.
NVidia shadowplay is available for both streaming and manual video's.

Cons: At high heats the left side of the keyboard starts to get a tiny bit hot; that's where the cooling pad comes into play.
Keyboard is a bit weird because the windows key is on the opposite side that I'm use to.
Left handed mouse not recommended.
Every now and again, the computer has a miniature panic attack where it just does not want you to type anything (that could just be Avast! going crazy, or it could be NVidia going crazy. I have no idea) but that is very rare.
Windows 8.1 (I like it, but putting it here because people don't like it)
There is a lack of instruction on what is going on with the custom MSi apps, but they are pretty explainable what they do.
A few reviews stated that the graphics card goes bad, but it has a backup in case.
You MUST go into nvidia control pannel and activate it manually. Do not think that having it set to auto will make it come on when it's a good time. It is a very illogical function sometimes, and even when one half of the program state's it is something, the other half that controls the graphics card will not kick in.
The chrome feature that comes "pre-installed" if selected, is 32 bit, and not 64. Java 64 bit will not play nicely with that, so you'll have to upgrade.
You must update the system. Do not think you can go without updating, or you'll find it without wifi sometimes.
The wifi card is a bit funny and after a few failed attempts at connecting to an AP, it just quits. I don't know why, but it is not a windows issue, for Linux has the wifi driver, and it does the same.
Some of the key's will have a different function on boot sometimes, and I believe it is the Steelseries engine. It can run just fine without it, but then you have a lack of led color.
The led's for caps lock and num lock are at the very front of the computer on the edge past the trackpad. It's a bit annoying to check if you have numlock on or not.
Bluetooth. I hate bluetooth. Always have, always will (that is not because of this computer)
The hard drive is partitioned into an OS drive (500 gig) and a Data drive (450 gig) so I suggest combining them.
Battery life is low, but this is expected.

Other Thoughts: This is a great computer, and I really suggest getting it if you have a choice of this or the one before it. It's a sturdy computer, and will do as you need.
I take care of this computer as if it is my child, and I have not damaged it at all in any way shape or form. I spent good money on it, so i'm taking care of it dearly.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible experience

This review is from: MSI GE Series GE70 Apache Pro-012 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: The laptop looks great, however.......

Cons: I just purchased this laptop and guess what: the gpu is faulty. I'm having HUGE difficulties to get my replacement since that the MSI support service is at least... well.. terrible. It took almost 1 week just to open the RMA service and they are not replying to my ticket. I don't know what will happen from now on. Nevertheless, if you are lucky and your laptop is not faulty everything will be fine. Unfortunately, this is one of the worst RMA experiences that I ever had.

So beware, their RMA service is not the best.

Lets see what happens...

4 out of 5 eggsDecent for the price

This review is from: MSI GE Series GE70 Apache Pro-012 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Runs games with max settings quite well and has an awesome customizable keyboard. Very lightweight for a gaming machine.

Cons: You have to void the warranty to open the back panel. There is only one internal SATA and the 2 mSATA are not positioned very well. It also vents the heat on the left side and if you use something like a logitech G13, it burns your hand. The heat output is very high to the point where it is painful blowing on your hand.

Other Thoughts: Overall a decent machine but I would recommend getting the GT model or the ASUS G750.

5 out of 5 eggsVery nice laptop

This review is from: MSI GE Series GE70 Apache Pro-012 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: This laptop has the GTX 860M 2GB GDDR5.
Very powerful and can run world of tanks at max, at 40-60fps. WoT is a very demanding game due to bad optimization but this laptop can run it fine.

The keyboard looks and awesome.

Build quality is decent, not the best, but decent enough.

Screen is beautiful as expected for a 1920x1080.

Video card is almost double the performance of the GTX 660M I previously had and a bit faster than the i7 3630qm.

The default hard drive is 1TB at 7200rpm, which is a lot better than 5200rpm that other laptops have. Still, an SSD would be best, but I can't be complaining.

Cons: Fingerprints can show up easily on the palm rests though you can easily wash it away

The laptop does get warm, many people complain about this. However, it isn't really much of a problem. During World of Tanks, it reaches 80-89c with the turbo fan turned on. This game makes ANY PC run hot so that is decent temps I guess.

**PLEASE NOTE**
When I first started a game, the laptop had the 860m disabled by default and the Intel HD4600 enabled. I couldn't figure out how to switch it until I went into the NVidia control panel, after installing latest drivers, and selecting the 860m under global settings. There is a tab at the top that says "Preferred graphics processor". Simply choose the GTX 860M and you're good to go. This isn't really much of a con though.

Other Thoughts: The page says this laptop has the i7 4700 at 2.4ghz. However, the one I received was the i7 4710HQ at 2.5ghz. So that was great.

I used EVGA precision as utility to monitor temperatures and GPU usage, etc.. However, the program was consuming 50% CPU and causing the fan to run fast at idle. I switched to MSI Afterburner and problem solved.

4 out of 5 eggsA Few Things

This review is from: MSI GE Series GE70 Apache Pro-012 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Fast
Great Graphics Performance - WOW 860M is beast!
Supports mSATA drives
Love the keyboard
Turbo fan switch is awesome

Cons: Interesting configuration choices
Software/Windows needs tweaks out of the box
Can get warm with a full gaming load
Touchpad sticks but who games with a touchpad?

Other Thoughts: Overall happy with this machine but had some annoying issues out of the box. First, you'll want to go into the hardware settings for the wi-fi adapter and make sure it isn't set to "sleep" This will solve the machine dropping the Internet frequently.. Learned this by trial and error. Secondly, update to the Latest Intel Bluetooth/Wireless drivers. This will solve frequent issues with a Bluetooth Mouse. I'm knocking off an egg, as these 2 items would have saved me a couple hours of messing around diagnosing problems; problems that would not have existed if the latest drivers were installed (4/22/14) and the machine configured properly.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic Sleek Notebook

This review is from: MSI GE Series GE70 Apache Pro-012 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: This laptop is fast and it looks great. It'll run all the games I own at high settings. I thought I would hate Windows 8.1 but it's actually not that bad once you get used to it.

Cons: It does get a little warm, but I prepared for this and purchased a cooling pad.

Other Thoughts: This laptop is fantastic for the price and I highly recommend it. This is my first MSI laptop and I am very Impressed
