1 out of 5 eggsBuyer Beware

This review is from: MSI GS Series GS60 Ghost Pro-052 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 1TB HDD 128GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB GDDR5 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Specs
Looks

Cons: Size - This is supposed to be a 15 inch computer, but it is really a 15 inch SCREEN built into a 17 chassis. There is nothing to feel about this but underwhelmed. 15 inches is fine, but I didn't order the 15 inch model because I wanted a smaller screen, I wanted a 15 inch computer that would fit into smaller bags and luggage. Instead, the computer that arrived had the same length and width as my old 17 inch laptop.

Keyboard - Yes, Yes, the lights are pretty but what about functionality? 3/4 sized number pad keys make using the number pad a chore and is an unnecessary sacrifice when other laptop chassis with the same width have full sized keys. The undersized keys isn't the only problem. The zero key is not extra large so any touch typist will constantly find themselves hitting the arrow key. The arrow keys should have been offset slightly or at least been given some tactile method to differentiate them from the surrounding keys. Instead the right arrow key invades the number pad space.

Other Thoughts: MSI is supposed to be a brand that caters primarily to gamers, and the GS line is supposed to be a premium line within that brand, so the words Buyer Beware should have no place here. I could have circumvented these problems if I had verified the specs more closely, but this was supposed to be premium so when I bought a premium 15 inch gaming computer, I expected to get a 15 inch gaming computer. Instead I get a 17 inch computer with a 15 inch screen and a penny-pinching keyboard mocks the whole gamer mentality. As a gamer, keys should be where the gamer expects them to be. Speed is everything. There is no excuse for deviating from the standard sizes and layout just to fit a somewhat aesthetic bevel around the top 3/4 of the keyboard.

This computer is enough to completely turn me off to the MSI brand as a whole. To any new buyer I say, Buyer Beware! If you treat MSI as a budget copy-cat brand that tries to steal market share by mislabeling it's products then you can still get good deals. Because that is how this computer comes off. As a 17 inch computer with a 15 inch screen slapped on so MSI could claim to have a competitive product in the 15 inch class.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: MSI GS Series GS60 Ghost Pro-052 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 1TB HDD 128GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB GDDR5 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: It's an amazing laptop. Best laptop I've ever received. I have played a couple games like War Thunder, Simcity, Sims 3/4, Total War: Rome II, and some others. All of these games were set to the highest settings and it ran great. The combo package that comes with it is also great.

Cons: There's only two things that kinda bug me but not enough to knock off an egg.
1. The mouse pad is not all that great, some clicks do not register but most likely you'll use a mouse.
2. It gets a little noisy due to the fans while playing more demanding games but I cannot hear them when wearing an headset.

1 out of 5 eggsWireless Ruins this

This review is from: MSI GS Series GS60 Ghost Pro-052 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 1TB HDD 128GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB GDDR5 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: The build quality is great. I like that it's metal. I like the keyboard and the screen is great too. I love how portable this is and how thin and light it is. It's a very fast computer, I am surprised at how quick it gets to the log in screen. I purchased this computer because it has great specs for a decent price.

Cons: The wireless is horrible. The only game I really play consistently is World of Warcraft. My 6 year old Asus laptop holds a connection better than this. I've upgraded the wireless to the latest drivers and tried a few other things to try to get this to work but none of it helps. The game starts off fine but within a few minutes I have a ping in the 1000-3000 range and makes the game unplayable. I can't even get in to a server on Battlefield 4.

Other Thoughts: I mainly bought this computer for school and it surfs on the web great but plays games horribly. I need to contact tech support but have not done that yet. So far I'd say avoid this computer and avoid headaches.

5 out of 5 eggsA Real Pro

This review is from: MSI GS Series GS60 Ghost Pro-052 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 1TB HDD 128GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB GDDR5 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: This is a very fast laptop with a better-than-advertised CPU, 870 GPU, plenty of RAM, a great design, a THIN body, light weight and a gorgeous display. HD is not even the best thing about this display - the low glare, high viewing angles and color quality are really fantastic. The switching graphics keep it cool when doing non-gaming stuff but it flies when called on.

Cons: Seriously, none so far.

Other Thoughts: If you get this laptop, you will NOT be disappointed. It weighs so little and works SO WELL. Great for everyday computing and modern "top shelf" games. Remember the 128GB SSD - it makes the computer so fast but you have to remember all the time not to install stuff to it. Set up Steam, Origin, etc. to use the D: drive before you start downloading. Oh, and the Killer Gaming Network adapter is amazingly fast - I NEVER would have believed that would make a difference but it DOES.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Gaming Laptop!

This review is from: MSI GS Series GS60 Ghost Pro-052 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 1TB HDD 128GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB GDDR5 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: This is by far the best gaming laptop i've had so far. the weight, 1080 resolution, rgb keyboard and thin profile are all great aspects of this laptop.

the boot time will be under 4 seconds and i love the fact that it doesn't have that much bloatware already installed.

i've been playing Diablo 3 RoS on this so far it the frame rate looks pretty stable. currently investigating if there is major frame drop when playing with huge mobs of enemies.

my next experiment will be video rendering to see if it is anywhere near my 4770k desktop.

Cons: here are the 3 things i don't like about this laptop:
- the lid easily has fingerprints on it unless you constantly clean it.
- there is no battery managing software that stops the laptop from charging the battery to 100%. this can cause battery longevity issues especially since you can't swap out the battery.
- the mouse track pad isn't as sensitive/accurate as i would like but that is a minor gripe. for gaming, i'll use a plug-in mouse and that's fine.

Other Thoughts: all gaming laptops get hot so that's not a valid gripe since i also bought a cooling fan.

5 out of 5 eggsFast and light

This review is from: MSI GS Series GS60 Ghost Pro-052 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 1TB HDD 128GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB GDDR5 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Ultra fast and light for a gaming laptop! I also like that you can customize the backlit keyboard color scheme. With the SSD as the boot drive, it boots up fast with plenty of storage space on the 1TB HDD. I got this for my son and I'm seriously thinking about getting one for myself.

Cons: So far no cons for the laptop itself.

2 out of 5 eggsMSI GS60 Ghost Pro

This review is from: MSI GS Series GS60 Ghost Pro-052 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 1TB HDD 128GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB GDDR5 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: -Display looks awesome in 1080p

-Steelseries keyboard responsiveness feels great, the backlighting is a cool touch to show off to people. Key placement takes a bit to get used to however.

-Feels fast, very little FPS lag in games

-Extremely light and thin, could not believe it when it first came out of the box

-No problems with heat where your hand would rest on the left or right side, nor is there any heat problems on the QWER key area.

Cons: I've had multiple issues so far with this laptop.. but I'll get to those later. First I'll write the actual cons I've found
-very short battery life off the charger, max of approximately an hour with basic gaming, pushes 2 hrs on internet usage.

-Fans are quite noisy when doing only basic internet browsing compared to my 3 year old Asus 14" laptop. (I've done my research and apparently you can undervolt them when you have basic browsing being done, apparently it helps but I didn't even want to try because of the issues I'm having)

-The material around the screen is pretty wide, it looks like mid 2000s style laptops making it look kind of ugly, but you don't really notice it when you're glued to the awesome display

-Small thing but expected with a gaming laptop, the powerbrick is pretty heavy and bulky, but its livable.

Now, on to the issues I've had with this laptop so far..

-First thing I noticed was the internet connection was dropping every few minutes, this occurred whether I was gaming, surfing, or watching videos. The connection to the router was still on, however my internet access just disappeared. I have the stock Verizon Fios wireless router and after making sure every driver was up to date, including redownloading my intel drivers, I was stuck. I read it could be a compatibility issue with the wireless card in it, so I came up with an idea.
I plugged in my old Apple Airport Extreme, reconfigured it, and connected it to my fios router. Like magic, I had consistent internet connection, but I was still getting ping spikes in some of my games. This wasn't as common, but my main concern is the next problem.

So far I've tested it on League of Legends, Strife, Smite, and Counterstrike: GO. My games will randomly freeze with the sound in the background coming through like a broken skipping record. Playing competitive games like these, being frozen for a good 5-15 seconds is not exactly a good thing because they're extremely fast-paced. The sound issue happens most consistently when switching between different tabs on CS: GO, no matter how low I set the graphical settings.

I've already contacted tech support after registering the product with them. I'm hoping somehow I'll be able to get a full refund for this, because I'd be very happy to take myself elsewhere to find a high-end gaming laptop. If I'm going to pay this much for a laptop meant for running games, I shouldn't have the issues I did.

Other Thoughts: Granted it could just be a lemon, my family is a magnet for lemon computers, cars, and every electronic around. I just thought I'd share my opinion on this and let people know to be prepared that this may happen if they purchase this.

5 out of 5 eggsMSI GS60 052 Intel i7 4710 2.50 ghz! 870m 3gb

This review is from: MSI GS Series GS60 Ghost Pro-052 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 1TB HDD 128GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB GDDR5 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Everything about this laptop is amazing, i read reviews about the keyboard flaws. I'm not sure if they received defective keyboards or if I'm just not used to the back-lighting, but i have got to say the lighting is perfect for my needs and gives the laptop a sleek and elegant look when in dim or non-lighted areas. On another NOTE seeing as IT IS listed as a i7 4700 HQ @ 2.40 . I WAS VERY pleased to take a look at the specs, and Find a i7 4710 HQ at 2.50!!! (NOT SURE IF NEWEGG HAS NOT UPDATED THE LISTING? thanks msi! :D )

Cons: No Complaints i may have found something, but was happy to get more than i expected and paid for. One con and its not really related to the computer, win 8.1 charms are a little annoying you may want to disable swipe gestures on the track pad, It may just be my hand placement.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Laptop

This review is from: MSI GS Series GS60 Ghost Pro-052 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 1TB HDD 128GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB GDDR5 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Very powerful, thin and pretty decent battery life considering the horsepower underneath this chassis.
Plays anything you throw at it without hiccups. Amazing IPS screen and viewing angles. You can't go wrong with this laptop. For those complaining about extreme heat and horrible battery life and burns in your laps, you probably got a faulty unit; at least I haven't had those kind of issues with mine...... I haven't had any issues like that in a month of ownership; I would definitely recommend this laptop, the build quality is excellent. A+ laptop.

Cons: It can get a little hot while gaming and the battery life could be somewhat better considering it's using a Haswel CPU. This laptop absolutely doesn't throttle due to heat; it runs within acceptable GPU temps at all times.
Also, MSI could have thrown in 16GB of RAM instead of 12; but that is not a deal breaker.

Other Thoughts: This laptop is a no brainer;if you are a gamer and are looking for a powerful and thin laptop don't look any further; this one is the right for you. I'm very happy with my purchase and with the build quality of this great MSI GS60 laptop.

1 out of 5 eggsAbsolutely Terrible

This review is from: MSI GS Series GS60 Ghost Pro-052 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 1TB HDD 128GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB GDDR5 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Graphically capable. Thin. Lightweight.

Cons: Received with two keys popped out. Was able to pop them back in, but the build quality is mediocre at best. Screen wobbles when I type (I'm not a heavy typist). Smudges, smudges everywhere -- it's a problem. I read a review talking about the smudges that get on the device through basic use and thought it was laughable, but it seriously gets aggravating. I cannot touch any part of my computer without it becoming stained until I get my cleaning wipe for the glasses.

And it gets hot. Worse than car leather in mid-July hot. It left light burn marks on my legs through my Levi's after using it for less than an hour. I lifted it off once it became unbearable and felt the underside. It was like a kitchen stove.

Terrible, terrible product -- and don't believe anyone who tells you that the battery life is more than an hour.

Manufacturer Response:
