Tech Level Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
Pros: Size, screen resolution
Cons: - Build quality: The plug of the power cord doesn't stay firm in its socket and even the slightest move of this netbook on the desk stops the charging; keybord is not flat; webcam cannot be set up to provide sharp images.
- System: The computer is sluggish under a normal use without playing games of any kind. I uninstalled all the bloatware and and still no change.
Maybe the Atom N270 cannot handle the increases demand of a larger screen and a video card.
- Fan: The fan is quite loud and runs continuously from the moment you turn on this computer till you turn it off.
Other Thoughts: I bought this laptop at Office Depot based on my experience with an Acer 8.9" netbook and after I read the reviews of the "experts". Big mistake. Now 3 weeks later I cannot return it or exchange it for another brand. I should have waited for a newer 11.6" netbook with Windows 7 premium and a better processor.

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Power. For the price, this thing is pretty much unbeatable. No task I threw at this thing disappointed me. I have not yet once actually heard it make any sound whatsoever, the speakers were surprisingly hi fidelity, and sounded pretty crisp with some casual gaming. The preinstalled operating system is also surprisingly lightweight, especially considering this is an HP machine. I was originally planning to put 7 on straight away, but decided I was content enough with XP as provided to just keep using it for now.
Cons: Mostly my issue is with the screen. I've never owned a netbook before, so I don't know if this is something common to all netbooks but the viewing angle is pretty smelly. Shifting just 6 inches right or left causes contrast issues, and the only way to ensure a completely uniform picture is to keep the computer at least an arm's length away. Also worth noting is the lack of keyboard capslock/scroll lock indicators, and the fact that the touchpad buttons run right up to the edge of the machine, so be careful if propping this up on your lap in bed or something. Also, the headphone and microphone jacks are combined, and the computer doesn't come with a splitter to plug in traditional headsets, though if you plug in headphones, they'll work fine.
Other Thoughts: Just thought I'd post some vague performance info: This thing definitely has no problems with HD video... I played a 720p copy of "Che" without a hiccup. Fullscreen flash is indeed a no-no, but regular embedded flash videos (including youtube "HD") work great. Older games like Deus Ex and UT, Starcraft and Diablo II run flawlessly, if you're up for some nostalgia, and some newer games like Fable and World of Warcraft produced some pretty surprising results. Perfectly playable in both cases. Counter Strike Source on lowest settings with default drivers seemed to be pretty map-dependent, some averaging 60fps (perfectly fine), others 15 fps (unplayable). EVE Online was another surprise, ran excellently with most settings on high. I've yet to try anything more recent because the above mentioned are all I really see myself killing time with, so for me, this is one excellent buy. I highly recommend this product from my experience with it thus far.

Great Netbook

Pros: Great netbook! I have owned this for few weeks now and love it. It does exactly what it should and then some. This netbook comes with windows xp, I immediately installed windows 7 and even with only 1GB of ram it ran it very well (I later upgraded my RAM to 3GB, great investment). Word, Excel, FF, IE, Hulu (not full screen) and Youtube all are quick and snappy. When flash 10.1 comes out at the end of the year it will allow for better streaming with HULU since the load can be passed from the ATOM to the ION. I was able to install steam and play some source games. HL2 & Portal ran pretty well (25-50FPS). CS:S was a little choppy but hey, this is a netbook, not a gaming laptop. (all testing was with the highest graphic detail, the 1366X768 resolution, and the modified ION LE drivers <-- better performance.) Light gaming with the ION is great!
Cons: One thing I disliked about ALL netbooks is how close the trackpad is to the keyboard. This causes headaches when you type and accidentally graze the touchpad with the palm of your hand. The Mini 311 is no exception. This is something that I didn't want to "just get used to" simply because the laptop was so small. My workaround for this was to disable tapping on the trackpad. Now I can type and I never have to worry about accidentally touching the trackpad which would cause all sorts of problems! The downside to this is having to use the buttons below the trackpad to click. In my opinion, it was worth it.
Other Thoughts: While this is the ION LE chipset, potential buyers should do some searching online for the modified nvidia drivers that allow the ION LE to become an ION. Apparently the hardware in the ION and ION LE are identical. The ION LE's are crippled by software. If you are skeptical do some google searches and install GPUZ on your HP Mini 311. Upon running it, you will see that your ION LE chipset is capable of DX10, which is the difference between the ION and the ION LE. With the modified drivers, you can make DX10 happen effectively turning your ION LE into an ION. Keep in mind that this may only work if you have installed windows 7 and not xp. As a student I received a discounted version of 7 so this was the logical choice for me.

Can't wait to see what Flash 10.1 does for Hulu and Youtube!
