5 out of 5 eggsSolid Notebook

Pros: Powerful workstation replacement. Beautiful screen.

Cons: Any con would simply be a factor of this type of computer and therefor not a con at all. Some may complain it's too big or get a little warm, but thats what you get when you buy a 17 inch i7...

Other Thoughts: I added a solid state drive to this computer brining my total around $1800.00 shipped. No other vendor out there can get these specs for that price. I haved played starcraft 2 for hours on ultra as well as run 3-4 virtual machines at a time without a hick-up. I have not experienced any of the high temp or over heading proplems other have experienced. The wrist area barly gets very warm. I did a clean install on the new drive with all the latest drivers from the respective vendors.

1 out of 5 eggsMake Sure Turbo Boost is Working

Pros: Based on the Specs, this would probably be a good machine if it worked!

Cons: Turbo Boost does not work! After spending a week installing software and configuring the computer, I realized that Turbo Boost was not working. After contacting HP numerous times I was told that I had to rebuild the system and that this would make the Turbo Boost work. Guess what? Still does not work. Because of Newegg's Return policy, I am essentially stuck with this computer or a replacement of the exact same device. Make sure you think long and hard before you buy a computer through these people because if you do not like it for any reason, including the fact that it simply does not work as advertised, you are stuck with it!

5 out of 5 eggsOutstanding laptop!

Pros: - Elegant design, probably best looking laptop on the market
- Aluminum case all the way around, with beautiful engraving
- Gorgeous 1080p display
- Back-lit full keyboard
- Much better for gaming than I thought it would be
- Just powerful; everything is so quick and snappy!
- Two batteries!
- Dual hard drives, though no raid 0/1
- Great selection of video output
- Blu-ray drive

Cons: - As expected, it runs hot
- The trackpad is not very well designed, also where is the scrolling capabilities?
- Cannot do raid 0/1, but I've come to expect this from HP at this point
- Lid is a bit hard to get open
- The pieces of hardware that connect the laptop and display together are getting scratched and scuffed by the edges of the display. Bad design. Not sure if this has happened to anyone else.
- Battery life is not good, even with the 9-cell. I get about 2 hours max with that with an SSD.

Other Thoughts: I've had several laptops over the past 10+ years, and this is by far and away the best laptop I've owned. It is the first laptop I've bought, used, and felt completely "wowed" by.

I wanted a portal desktop replacement and this laptop defines that perfectly. It is not an ideal gaming workstation but it doesn't disappoint. I've been able to play Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age on max settings at 1920x1080.

I replaced the main harddrive with and SSD and wow, what a difference. It takes about 12 seconds to do a full reboot and get to a working desktop. Just amazing! I would highly recommend doing the same.

I couple of other quick positives before I gripe about a couple of things. First, I love the keyboard. For some reason I find it way easier to type with. Second, I love how the function keys are by default settings keys.

As I mentioned in 'Cons', the pieces that hold the display to the laptop are scratched and scruffed. Very annoying. Also, the trackpad is just hard t

2 out of 5 eggsEnvy

Pros: Beautiful screen and exterior. Can't beat i7 processor.

Cons: Crack an egg and get out the bacon because the top left corner (over the processor) will cook up a fine breakfast. Seriously, this thing is way too hot. Since moved to Asus. Only other major flaws are all the junk HP loads on there and...oh, inside of one month it died, caput, adios. Complete power failure.

Other Thoughts: I probably had a worse than normal experience but the major draw back is the extreme heat. I don't know how these things could last long with that kind of temp.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop

Pros: Simple macbook pro-like design, crisp screen, dual hard drive bays and a chicklet keyboard. * GB of RAM is awesome

Cons: First thing out of the box you need to update the BIOS. It is so hot you could cook an egg on it.

5 out of 5 eggsHigh Performance

Pros: 1) Quality built laptop--great design--came in well packaged.
2) Nice bright screen...backlit keyboard, 17 inch screen nice...with separate number pad is great.
3) Graphics amazing...very fast laptop...and quiet for the size of processor...not loud to me even with laptop cooler fans.
4) Great stats: graphics card high end, 8g memory, I7, hard drive size good, blue ray, 9 cell extra battery a plus as is 3.0 USB slot, beats audio nice, wifi and bluetooth works well also.
5) Have had no quality issues as some have mentioned...all memory there and has run great.
6) Price would be about $300+more to build the same laptop on the vendors site so great value for the stats you get for the money...expensive...but you pay for what you get.

Cons: 1) Left of mouse pad is warm to the reviews, knew it would be (should be for the I7) so got a laptop cooler great and moves the hot to not bad.
2) Lots of bloatware.

Other Thoughts: 1) Some have mentioned the mouse pad...I have no issues with the upper left hand corner touch to turn it off when using external mouse.
2) Had to hunt around to find a case that it can fit in...not all 17 inch cases are really big enough.
3) Bought as replacement for desktop...does the job well.
4) Upgraded to Windows 7 the xp mode for old programs...loaded slick and quick.

3 out of 5 eggsA great deal if you can get it as advertised.

Pros: Beautiful, sleek, USB 3.0, Fast i7 chip, despite what other users have reported it does not seem to get any hotter than other 17" laptops I've owned.

Cons: My unit arrived with two memory chips:

One of these is a 4GB chip, the other sadly is only a 2GB chip. The part # on my box reads WQ831UA#ABA, which whether you buy it here or anywhere else, or search on HP, list it as an maxed out with 8GB.

Other Thoughts: Newegg to their credit will take a return or refund, which I am considering. Although a g.skill memory chip would run me about $70, I believe the equivalent Samsung chip is closer to double that.

HP told me to go through Newegg and wouldn't budge, but did say if I ordered it through them, they would send me a 4GB chip, which is what I asked newegg for but was denied.

2 out of 5 eggsHot, Noisy, Hate Mouse Pad, Bad design

Pros: Sleek, Powerful. High resolution.

Cons: Hard drive is noisy and can't sleep with laptop on. My left palm gets burnt from the heat escaping the Video card. Shuts off for no reason, probably due to overheating. Hopefully, HP replaces it soon. Bad USB design.

3 out of 5 eggsA great deal -- but not without its flaws

Pros: This machine has excellent specs for the price. I can finally play Crysis! The screen and exterior design are both beautiful. It doesn't scream "gaming laptop" like some machines do.

The inclusion of a 9-cell extended life battery in addition to the standard 6-cell is a plus.

Cons: My machine was defective on arrival -- the system fan would always run at full speed. HWTemp led me to believe it was a faulty temperature sensor. I was pleasantly surprised by how easy and quick the repair process was with HP. They turned my machine around in one day. Unfortunately, it seems to have been treated somewhat poorly--there were chips in the paint on the bottom where it appears they used a hard tool to remove the rubber feet to gain access to the screws. They solved my fan problem by replacing the system board.

My machine wobbles slightly, but not enough to bother me. I probably wouldn't have noticed if it hadn't been reported by others.

I wish it had a docking station port like my old HP Pavillion dv9500. I now have to disconnect 6 cables whenever I take my laptop on the go.

I've noticed an occasional high pitched whine when the machine is idle, but this appears to have decreased lately.

Other Thoughts: This machine does run hot, but I have my machine elevated on a passive notebook stand (no fans) and while temperatures get into the 70s and 80s Celsius when gaming, the machine has remained stable. I also use a external keyboard, so I don't notice the body of the machine getting hot since I'm not normally in contact with it.

I've had one spontaneous reboot (the machine wasn't even under load), but hopefully it was just a fluke and doesn't become a problem.

3 out of 5 eggsMixed Views

Pros: Pro 1: "In Depth Specs" The computer runs wonderfully with it's i7 720Q 1.6GH~2.6GHz quad(octa/virtual)-core CPU, it's 8GBs of DDR3 running @ max of 667MHz (Hynix brand DIMMs) (more below: Other) and a ATI Mobility HD 5850 with 1GB of DDR5 (not DDR3) running @ max 500MHz (more below: Other) and DDR5 runs max 900MHz. As for storage this contains 2x "WDC WD3200BEKT" 320GBs running @ 7.2K RPMs.

Pro 2: "Mild Gaming" I prefer to play my games windowed (1280x720) instead of a full screen so I can keep an eye out for computer stats and temperatures. I can run Crysis with Extreme Particles mod @ Ultra High 4xAA in 1280x720 and get 20~30fps. this goes pretty much the same for NFShift, and Starcraft 2. I couldn't play Oblivion with these settings in a window, the same for Front Mission 5 and Metro 2033.

Pro 3: "Beats Audio Does Work!" Sounds wonderful (for the first 30 days) through the speakers and any set of headphones. I wish the Beat Audio control panel had more than 2 equalizer preset

Cons: Con 1: "Bad Speaker, Bad" Nearly a month after getting mine in the mail the right speaker broke. I think it's because of the 2 USB ports on the right hand side get hot. My Blue-Track mouse would keep disconnecting for no reason and finally the speaker went out.

Con 2: "Too Many Drives!?" OMyG too many freaking partitions, I swear there was 4 drives. 2 Drives were obviously garbage so I removed those and extended the others.

Con 3: "Bloatware, HP's Bloatware" Freaking annoying on how much crud they set up on these things now, Icon Packer (trial), Fences, Roxio (doesn't work) and not to mention HP's Netflix and Hulu apps (don't work). I will give them props for giving away a 1 year subscription of Norton for free though.

Other Thoughts: Other 1: "RAM" The RAM is rated to run @ 667MHz but Everest reports that the max the Envy 17 will push it is 609MHz, so there's another underclocked part here.

Other 2: "GPU" The ATI Mobility HD 5850 is underclocked from 650MHz to 500MHz which is just 10 or so fps extra and if you really want those frames you can use MSI's Afterburner software to OC the GPU (I haven't, neither should you).

Other 3: "Heat" during play time, running Crysis with above settings I only reach temperatures around 180f~190f, idle 145f~150f, and the HDDs never go about 150f. If you expect this too run cool, I'm sorry you're special

Other 4:"MiniOS" HP tried doing something pretty cool, run a small operating system before Win7 for music, photos, videos and web but it falls short and delivers half way through. Every 5 seconds the pointer stops moving for a second, the miniOS cant detect user music, video, photo folders. It's sluggish and thankfully you can disable it.
