1 out of 5 eggsMassive Failure of Hard Drive and Touchpad/Buttons

Pros: Very good specs.
Very fast processor.

Cons: I've had problems with this PC from the beginning. We've had the PC since 7/2012. The touchpad and buttons "freeze" frequently and require reboots to make them functional again. After 6 months of ownership the hard drive "crashed". I returned the PC to HP two times for repairs. Although they seem of have fixed the hard drive the touchpad/button freezing is worse than before repairs.

I talked with HP case management who agreed to replace the laptop with a new PC of comparable specs. We were told we would receive a box to return the defective dm4-3170se and a new pc would be sent out to us. That was about 2 weeks ago and we have received no return box, no new computer, and no confirming e-mails from HP customer service nor "HP case management." When we call we are told "the exchange is in process."

My wife and I and are very worried that HP might be giving us the "run-around." We are very upset about the poor quality of the PC and HP's actions regarding the replacement.

Other Thoughts: We hope HP will do the right thing here and will provide a remedy for the months of problems we have had with this PC. I will update this review.

1 out of 5 eggsMassive PC Hard drive, touchpad and buttons failure

Pros: This PC has very good specs (on paper)

Cons: We've had problems with this PC since we bought it in July, 2012. The hard drive crashed and the touchpad/buttons has severe problem with "freezing." We have to reboot the PC to restore touchpad/button functioning. We've returned the PC to HP for repairs twice. While the hard drive was replaced the touchpad/button freezing problems are worse than before we sent the PC for repair.

HP "Casemanagement" suggested and agreed to replace the dm4-3170se with a new PC of comperable specs. That was about 2 weeks ago. We were supposed to receive a box to return the defective PC and then they were to send us the new laptop. We' ve received nothing in writing--no confirming e-mails, no return box, and no replacement PC! HP customer service and their casemanagers just tell us when we call that "the exchange is in process."

My wife and I are very worried that we are getting the run around. We are very upset.

Other Thoughts: I will update this review once I know more.

1 out of 5 eggsNightmare!

Pros: Nice looking laptop. Looks sturdy and appears well built.. Has a finger scanner for security.

Cons: It's made by HP and we have had nothing but trouble with it from day 1. Bad hard-drive which Best Buy fixed for us, then the DVD drive had to be replaced, which was sent out to us for us to replace ourselves. That saved HP a buck or 2 getting the customer to do the repairs. But still this thing seemed slow at times, the finger scanner became intermittent and it would randomly select something on a web page without you touching the mouse buttons. Then my wife opened it up one morning to see a black circle on the right side of the screen which over time as the lid was flexed when opening closing turned into a crack which now extends right across the screen. After a few hrs wrangling over the phone it was sent in to HP to fix. We hear nothing fromo them and then about 10 days later after my wife has made several calls to chase it down HP tells us they want $350 to fix. Although the laptop had only left the house once as my wife has been very ill most of the year and she'd pretty muxh had it by her side the whole time HP said it must have been accidental so we had to pay. They wouldn't say why they believed that. We had sent in a list of things we felt were wrong with it and they just ignored the other issues – just not interested. My wife argued them down as she did not feel we should pay to have it fixed – we'd only had it just over 6 months. She wanted it back, so in the end offered to pay $100 toward repairs, they refused and said $175 and wouldn't budge. Then they offered to send it back if we paid the cost of the screen ($55) and fixed it ourselves!!!!! CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT!! My wife refused and they sent it back and get this when it arrived they had not addressed any of the other problems on it – the cover for the finger scanner was still still coming off BUT they did include a CD of Christmas songs in the box. Is this for real – we felt like they were rubbing our noses in it. I WON'T BUY ANOTHER HP PRODUCT EVER AND I ADVISE YOU NOT TO ALSO. Their customer service is a joke and just another avenue for making more money.

Other Thoughts: ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTED WITH HP.

4 out of 5 eggsTerrific little laptop

Pros: Has everything I wanted at a decent price: Win 7, backlit KB, DVD drive, bluetooth, SSD acceleration, fingerprint reader, good audio, mid-sized & light weight. Can start applications within 20-30 sec from cold startup! Very little battery drain when closing cover. This machine stands heads and shoulders above the Toshiba Satellite it replaces.

Cons: BSD occurring several a times a day when used with HP x4000B bluetooth mouse. HP was unable to figure this out, I did after two weeks talking to tech support. Took my loss on $35 mouse and switched to Dell mouse. Now working perfectly but had to take one egg away.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop

Pros: Touch/Feel of Keyboard
Decent Processing Power (i5)
Sweet Hybrid SSD/HDD allows for fast start up
Display Resolution: 1600 x 900 (really helpful for wide terminal sessions)
Red-Light Back lit keyboard.
Distinct Left/Right mouse buttons--I need those.

Cons: Integrated Video Card (although - i can play Borderlands at native resolution with 0 chunking)

Other Thoughts: I don't think i was really the target market for this laptop, but after a lengthy search, i settled on this guy.

The whole Beats branding thing is kind of meaningless to me.

The overriding factor in choosing a laptop for me was the ergonomic design of the machine. I really need to have a good vibe when i type, look at the screen and use the track-pad.

It's just a smooth-ride for me to operate.

The HW pretty much meets my needs.

Eclipse, netbeans, glass fish...development type junk.
It seems totally capable as a midlevel gaming platform.

1 out of 5 eggsBeware of Auto Update Issue

Pros: Slim and light. Great screen and sound.

Cons: Has issues with some auto updates causing auto check disk to run everytime unit is started. Now getting BSD when restoring.

Other Thoughts: Recommend avoiding until HP can address the issue.
