Great value
- Pros: Price, relatively solid, no hassle Win 7 upgrade for free, Win 7 runs really well on this machine, Ubuntu Linux dual boots and runs perfectly on this hardware. About as quiet as my Thinkpad.
- Cons: Everyone comments on the poor audio, and everyone is correct. I've never heard sound as bad as this from a computer before and you must experience it to truly appreciate it. :-) Touchpad isn't as smooth as I would like. Keyboard isn't as solid as my old Thinkpad, but then, how many laptops are? All of the cons are minor if you intend to use this machine for a general purpose or development machine like I do. I don't really do any games on this machine.
- Other Thoughts: cpu has virtualization feature but win 7's virtual mode is extremely slow on this laptop. I got MUCH better speed with win xp on vmware. The left palm rest gets a little warm as noted by others, but it's not objectionable and definitely cooler than the cup of coffee by my side. Excellent value for the money and I'm really happy with it.
great little laptop
- Pros: Great work/video editing machine. Ordering the upgrade to Windows 7 Professional (32 bit) was relatively hassle free, and Dell had it on its way within 3 days.
The CPU is a powerhouse, and scores very well in testing. I'm used to a quadcore, but this one is more than acceptable for use in a laptop.
- Cons: The sound is awful. My $300 netbook blows it away.
Don't go in thinking that upgrading to 4GB of ram is as easy as ordering a 2GB stick of Kingston & replacing the installed 1GB stick. It will not boot. Had to put the 1GB unit back in, and am currently running only 3GB. Lowest hard disk scores I've ever seen for an SATA 2.0 drive, but still acceptable for my uses. 7200 rpm or no, it's a slow drive, and defragging doesn't speed it up any. Stock (Hynix) RAM also has very low scores for DDR2 800. I'll be replacing it soon, so that's really a non-issue for me. If you think this laptop is capable of any intense gaming, you're going to be disappointed. It's not up to the challenge. No eSATA port. That's easily fixed by adding an adapter card, but I wish it had come with one. I knew it didn't have one prior to ordering, so no complaints. The case top is a fingerprint nightmare. I miss the matte finish on my old laptop. Again, I knew it had a polished finish prior to ordering.
- Other Thoughts: You can't go into the BIOS & set the amount of RAM to dedicate to video. That's a con as far as I'm concerned, and is my biggest disappointment. Still, the video quality is acceptable. It plays DVDs well enough, but HD video playback is disappointing.
Not having a volume control available in the system tray is annoying. Someone at Dell was either short-sighted, or deluded to think the end user wouldn't want one. It's a dualcore laptop. It's going to generate heat, and the system fan is going to have to run alot to keep it cool. The noise is minimal, and is better than a fried CPU. Overall, it outperforms my old laptop, so I'm not complaining. It's a very good work machine, and comes with no bloatware. There is no security suite trial installed, so be prepared to install your own antivirus and firewall as soon as you get it. I won't get crazy, and say this is the best laptop available for the money, but it's definitely worth every penny, with or without the Windows 7 upgrade.
Dell Vostro 1520
- Pros: Lots of laptop for the money
- Cons: I have spent hours trying to connect to my wireless network. Because this laptop uses its own configuration software, (which will not work for me) the WZC must be turned on. I get an error code referring me to Microsoft article 871122. I am unable to complete these steps. If I knew I was going to have this much trouble, I wouldn't have purchased this laptop.
