DELL XPS XPS13-40002sLV 13.3-inch Ultrabook - Silver

  • Intel Core i5-2467M 1.6GHz
  • 4GB Memory 128GB SSD HDD
  • Intel HD Graphics

Having a large screen doesn't necessarily mean an ultrabook has to be inconvenient to use and carry. The Dell XPS 13 notebook line features 13-inch HD displays, but its models aren't much bigger than computers with 11-inch screens, as they weigh less than 3 pounds and are only 12 inches in length. The Gorilla Glass display almost runs from edge-to-edge so there is no wasted space in the upper panel.

These Dell ultrabooks maintain their stylish appearances even after continuous use. The glass is notably scratch-resistant, and the outer shell is constructed from durable metals and composite materials. The high level of protection these features provide means the notebooks can be used in practically any environment without being any worse for wear.

4 out of 5 eggsVery nice ultrabook

Pros: Construction quality is excellent. The keyboard shape and structure are very comfortable for typing.
sound quality is decent for small size. Really small footprint, only 8.1" by 12.4" (finding a case kind of tricky).

Cons: Minor cons but worth mentioning. For some viewing angles, the hinge does not bend backward enough so you cannot get the best viewing image.
The trackpad works mostly well, but has occasional periodic glitches even with latest driver updates.
The keyboard deck and trackpad have this rubbery matte finish which attracts and retains finger/food grease.
No SD card slot, no ethernet jack either.

Other Thoughts: All in all, a very slick package with a definite high end appearance and feel, close to but not quite at an Apple product level.

4 out of 5 eggsNot bad at all, nice ultrabook

Pros: The keyboard is well, top notch for an ultrabook. For me this is important, because I do a lot of research and homework for college. The trackpad is satisfactory. Dell has been well on top of providing updates for the trackpad. Initially it was somewhat buggy, but it is working well now. The build construction seems very nice. Given the slim nature of the computer, the lid is rather sturdy. It does not feel cheap. The gorilla glass probably helps reduce any flex. Dell uses a fast samsung mSATA ssd in this device which makes the boot times fast, and programs load quickly. The display is crisp and bright. I really enjoy the carbon weave bottom plate. Very cool. The ac adapter is a fair size, the zenbooks is smaller, but there have many a rather high failure rate on the ASUS ac adapter (I still like asus, but their ac adapters aren't so good on zen, don't hate). This laptop is smaller than other 13.3in ultrabooks but still maintains the same size display.

Cons: Although my overall love for this product is high, there are a few double edge swords. For example, I like the rigidity(is that a word?) of the gorilla glass display. Heads up though, it has a glare. Vertical viewing angles on this are, pretty poor. The display looks nice, but be forewarned viewing angles vertically aren't great. Good news is the hinge allows easy adjustment to optimal angle. For me, this has been a minimal problem. I believe that even though I consider this ultrabook above average when compared to the run of the mill, I wish its price tag started at 799.99, or 849.99. That being said, it is still worth the asking price. A behind the screen vent instead of bottom vent would've been nice, but very few manufacturers are doing this. The unit only seems to get above warm when I play world of warcraft. I don't do this while the computer is on my lap though as I need to use a real mouse for WOWing.

Other Thoughts: Overall, due to the quality construction, the fast SSD, and above average keyboard, I feel as though this is the best ultrabook you can get right now. I realize there are a few models that are faster, but this one has the best keyboard I have used, and I like to be able to quickly type things into my computer without missing every 5th keystroke due to a poorly build machine. There are a few others that are close for me, but this one takes it. If you are heavily into multimedia and less into doing work(typing papers, docs, spreadsheets, etc) you will want to consider a Zenbook. Their display is better for viewing angles and offer the HD4000 graphics with the 3rd gen CPU. If you're not in the need for games and graphics, get this one. Quality is outstanding.

5 out of 5 eggsTop of the Line

Pros: Lets start by the fact that this is a 13.3 inch screen in a 12 inch body. The screen is wrapped in Gorilla Glass with hardly no bezel -- hence how they were able to crunch this into a smaller frame. A mix of carbon fiber, aluminum, and magnesium make up the structure of this beauty.

The touchpad is glass and there are rubber strips that go along the entire length of the bottom to prevent slippage and scratches to the carbon. The keyboard is back-lit and responsive and the keys are spaced nicely via a chicklet style.

I will not get into the specs considering they are provided.

This is one of the nicest Ultrabooks I used, and I used quite a few such as the Zenbook, and the Folio. The build quality is fantastic, and it looks very professional aka not a lot of "bling".

One more thing. . . it has a little button on the right next to the USB 3.0 port that allows you to check battery power without opening it up -- pretty cool.

Cons: Some of the problems I have with this unit is that it does not come with a USB to Ethernet converter, nor a mini display port to VGA -- the Zenbook comes with these. Since the keyboard area is black, it gets dirty and ugly quick, and there is some glare due to the Gorilla Glass. Other than that, It is a very nice machine.

4 out of 5 eggsGood with limitations

Pros: Great little computer. Battery life using wifi about 5 hours surfing the internet. Small and portable great for student use. Boot up from off takes about 10 seconds to the log in screen.

Cons: Small, compared to the other ultrabooks its below average size. 128 gig version quick to fill up. The touchpad is very sensitive (even after adjusting it) it senses my thumbs during typing without touching the pad and it will relocate the curser randomly on your page.

Other Thoughts: If your looking for a small laptop to do college or portable work this is great. Fits in a backpack and will hold its charge all day long. If you want to use it for anything besides a word processor or internet surfer you may want to go bigger.
