5 out of 5 eggsEXCELLENT Refurb Dell!

Pros: EXCELLENT Pricepoint - FANTASTIC quality and condition! I was pleasantly surprised at the condition and quality of this notebook when it arrived, and it runs flawlessly. Not a speed/gamer, but perfect for office and education applications. The shell is alloy (very durable for a non-ruggedized notebook) and the screen and keyboard are flawless, as was the entire exterior. I'm very impressed with what you get for the money on this particular deal.

Cons: None noted as of yet.
It only came with 1GB of RAM, but what do you expect at this price? Easily upgraded at a reasonable price, as it takes DDR2 SODIMM. The ONLY downside is that one of the two DIMM slots is under the keyboard, so it takes a little familiarity with notebook hardware navigation to replace that one. Still a piece of cake, because this is one of my favorite Dell notebook models.

Other Thoughts: This is a replacement notebook for my daughter (she isn't easy on portable computer products, so I didn't want to invest a ton of $$ on this replacement) to do her school assignments on. I was going to get her a refurb Toughbook, due to her history of destruction, but this one appears to be up for the task at a fraction of the price.

2 out of 5 eggsSpare battery with free computer

Pros: Got this for $159, not much more then the price of a spare D series battery.
Windows 7/Vista 64 bit drivers are available from Dell.
The model has only been out of production for about 4 years.
Max 4GB DDR2 memory upgradable and SATA 150 Disk Drive

Cons: The one I got had a severe abrasion mark across the upper center of the LCD, once I powered it up, there was also a 1/4 inch around screen imperfection. Lots of dings, scratches and chips. There's no refund on this item and no guarantee a replacement would be in any better shape.

Other Thoughts: I bought a tricked out dual core D520 circa 2006, just before Vista came out for about $2600 , it came with a Vista upgrade. I've since upgraded it to Windows 7. It's been a real workhorse of a machine.

4 out of 5 eggsThe last sturdy Dell laptops.

Pros: -Still runs after 7 years and one hard drive replacement.
-Sturdy, one of the last Dell computers built to these standards.
-One of the most comfortable laptop keyboards I've used.
-Easy to get inside and do your own repairs.
-Easily expandable memory.
-Wifi.

Cons: -Celeron processors are and always were bottom of the line.
-This computer, in 2012, will have an extremely hard time keeping up with the demands of day-to-day tasks.
-No SATA. The hard drive is IDE, so it's already difficult to find a replacement / upgrade for.
-The native OS for this model is Windows XP, but without doing anything to it, this computer will run extremely slowly with that OS.
-This is a 6-7 year old model with no upgrades.

Other Thoughts: I bought a Dell Inspiron 5160 in 2005, and 5 months later dropped it off of a counter top. This computer was the replacement for that and I still have it today. In the time that I've had it, I have only had to make one repair, and that was to replace a hard drive (which is something to be expected). The battery is completely dead after this time, which is also to be expected.

As I said, WinXP is what this machine was built for. And in it's time, it was an okay machine. But by 2008 this computer was almost useless to me. I have been running linux OSs, and am now using Ubuntu 12.04 with no issue! Ubuntu runs great and I'm actually considering giving the computer to someone who needs one.

The current retail price is about 1/5 what I paid in 2006. If you buy this, don't expect anything out of it. I would recommend looking into something from 2010-2011 instead of this. Unless you need it for replacement parts, or want a project, you'll probably not be happy. All I can say is good luck
