5 out of 5 eggswonderful machine

Pros: blu-ray player
great speakers
beautiful display
backlit keyboard

Cons: heavy and thick
pedestrian design

Other Thoughts: Dell finally did it right with this great machine. The only drawbacks, if you want to call them that, are the weight, thickness, and design. In this day and age of sleek ultrabooks, design is nice. But the features of this machine outweigh any such considerations. The blu-ray player, which is hard to find these days in a laptop for some reason, is smooth, beautiful, and crystal clear. And this feature makes this more an entertainment computer than a true portable. The speakers are more than adequate with good volume and sound. Likewise, backlit keyboards are a real plus as well as hard to come by in an Inspiron. One of the best buys I ever made on a laptop.

5 out of 5 eggsHard to Beat Deal Right Now

Pros: Great deal -- right now I think it's hard to beat without spending another $300+. Newegg is selling a refurb unit but as the previous reviewer stated you would be hardpressed to identify it as such. Mine came with a barely noticeable scuff mark along the outer plastic rim. Newegg is advertising 90 days of manufacturer basic warranty but mine has nearly a full year after looking up the service tag.

The machine is quick and responsive. The screen is very nice, full hd resolution which matches up with the included blue ray drive. The 7730 graphics is middle of the pack but allows decent gaming for the casual gamer not concerned about the absolute highest settings.

Dell's website has complaints from people concerning dropped wifi connections. I too experienced this -- the wireless connection simply ceased after about an hour and a half and I had to actually turn off and on the adapter to get it to connect again. This happened repeatedly -- but installing the driver updates at solved this problem.

Similarly, people complained that the 7730 driver was not compatible with windows 8 (see below too). I think prior to AMD's driver update, the driver was not automatically choosing to use the 7730 for graphics intensive applications. ATI's driver interface allows you to manually select which programs get the 7730 treatment but can also automatically detect when programs need extra help. Using the built in intel graphics whenever possible extends battery life. This feature is similar to Nvidia's optimus. I can say I have no problems with getting the 7730 to work in windows 8 and so far catalyst has auto selected the 7730 correctly every time.

Concerning Windows 8 -- this is my first experience with it and I found it a little annoying at first but after a few days I can see that there is some really good things about it, in fact I may learn to prefer it. I used to think windows 8 was written for the next generation of touch screen devices -- this machine is not one of those -- but there is new stuff here for all machines that I think I will soon wonder how I did without.

Overall, wow, what a deal. Thanks newegg.

Cons: Battery life. Two to three hours at most. This is not a problem for me but it is shorter than other machines of similar spec out there.

5 out of 5 eggsSleek, sharp, light

Pros: Quiet, fast, cool, blu-ray, beautiful display.

Cons: Windows 8, kinda heavy

Other Thoughts: The title of this review, all things I would not call this laptop. This is a utilitarian piece of gear. It is a well apportioned desktop replacement. Weighs nearly as much as one (not really but it's stout). And though it is sold as a refurb, I have found nothing about this that feels anything other than new.
I have been wanting a backlit KB for some time as I do a good deal of my work from the sofa while watching TV with the family.
I immediately took the 1TB platter drive out and put a Samsung 840 250GB in it's place. That simple move takes this from a nice laptop to one smoking fast PC. At a total cost of under a grand, this will keep pace with pretty much anything out there.
I am not a gamer, but I always want a graphics card because I don't want to be limited by my hardware. I do create blu-ray movies and am starting to mess with 3D. The revelation here is the Intel 4000 graphics. It is quite a capable processor!
The hi-tech guru reviewed this saying the AMD card doesn't work with Windows 8. Also that Dell knows about it. Anyway, far be it from me to call someone who claims to be a 5 star tech guy wrong but mine worked fine. Under Windows 8, you manage all graphics settings from Dell's management interface. You won't see anything specifically stating it refers to the on chip graphics or the card. Rather, you choose general power settings for how you want your PC to perform. You can clearly see the 2 different proccesors in the WEI index as the basic graphics on mine shows 5.5 but 3D gaming gets a 6.7.
In Windows 7, which I now have on here, you can actually access Catalyst Control Center and there is a new (to me) section to choose how the switching graphics will perform for each program. In the end, the Dell program makes sense because your average user doesn't really want to have to decide how each individual thing is handled in graphics and I can just picture my mother pulling a good portion of her hair out before finally calling me. Anyway, long story short. Dude "may" have had a problem. But it isn't a Dell issue and there isn't anything being done because there's nothing to do.
Not for the faint of heart. I took the Windows 7 off my old Inspiron. Installed it on this new one. And used the Windows 8 disk that came with this to put on the old one. Now in the past, all Dell OS install disks would install on all dell PC's, and only Dell PC's. That is now only somewhat true. Well, I guess since I did it, it is true. But it wasn't simple. Dell will not support this PC at any level beyond basic software support. Newegg said they'd get back to me but haven't.
I'm stubborn, and I did it, and I'm happy with the results. And as far as I know, I haven't broken any rules as each OS is installed on one PC. But, like I said, it ain't for the faint of heart.
This thing with Windows 8 was fast and beautiful.
With my comfy Windows 7 on it, it is just a dream. I'll let my kids play with the Windows 8 as I drag my feet into the new ecos

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It's pretty.

Cons: The 7730m does not work in the windows 8 environment and Dell is not moving to fix it. I will be returning this junk heap asap.
