2 out of 5 eggsWas good for 5 months

Pros: Fairly fast, nice big screen, quiet and looks good.....after you wipe the fingerprints off the glossy thing!

Cons: Graphics card died after 5 months. Started locking up and then would not boot into windows. Finally figured out it was the graphics card, as it would boot into vga if i disabled the nvidia drivers.
I had to waste the 4 gig that came with it to replace with 8 gig. Asus can fit in 4 ram chips so why can't Toshiba? Either that or give us a 4 gig chip instead of 2x2gb ones.

Other Thoughts: It's in the repair shop right now so i'm stuck using my netbook till they fix it. This is my 3rd laptop purchase (and most expensive by FAR) and it only lasted 5 months. My other 2 are still going strong and the oldest is 6 years old !! When you spend this much money it should not be crapping out after 5 months.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat machine

Pros: Great price for what you get - it's definitely a desktop replacement, the primary advantage to this system is its upgrade-ability. This system is a behemoth and you need to get the back-pack from Toshiba to carry it - but it performs without breaking a sweat. See "Other thoughts" for why this system won over others. The only reason it got 4 eggs is the bloat-ware that comes with it - fortunately, a clean install of Win 7 Utimate (64bit) on the new SSD drive took care of that. Boots up in about 20 seconds from completely shut-down.

Cons: Wish they would put this system out fully outfitted, or stripped to the bone so that I didn't have to toss the things that needed to be upgraded. It really isn't for travel - I got it as a desktop replacement, and while you can put it in a car - taking it anywhere via air is not for the faint of heart. And the power brick feels like it's made of lead. So you'll need to buy a netbook for travel - but this is literally a desktop replacement in every sense of the word.

Other Thoughts: After spending months looking for a desktop replacement, with everything I wanted, I gave up and started looking for a system with the parts I couldn't change which were what I wanted - high resolution video, Gigabit Ethernet card, and s CPU that could run several virtual machines simultaneously, with the least that had to be thrown away. As soon as I got it, I upgraded the 4Gb (tossed) to 8Gb, and ditched the 500Gb HDD (external backup) for a Crucial 256Gb SSD, and 1Tb HDD. I would have rather had a system with everything I wanted from the start, but the fact is no laptop out there has everything I wanted and needed. This one came closest, and the only part that was literally tossed was the 4Gb of memory. The 500Gb HDD was recycled into a netbook - the other extreme.

1 out of 5 eggsAdditional Review

Pros: I see this item is now deactivated but wanted to add info in case Newegg re-activates. Initial review was good but after owning for 4 months this laptop will no longer function.

Cons: I have performed multiple restores and reset to default factory settings but they don't fix the issue which is ... the laptop will completely shut off in the middle of any operation then when you try to reboot it locks up at the Windows start screen.

I have conversed with Tech Support multiple times and still no resolution. It appears to be a hardware issue but Tech Support is loath to admit and keeps wanting to try and do software fixes which are not working.

Other Thoughts: Newegg is great when a product needs to be RMA. Unfortunately it's past 30 days so I can't go through Newegg so I have to try and get Toshiba to replace, but I am not very confident after speaking with their Tech Support team on multiple occasions the past couple of days. I could be out 1500 plus so if you find this model here or elsewhere do not purchase!

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible Support

Pros: Great Specs

Cons: Horrible Support. Screen flexes when you open the lid, causing cracks.

Other Thoughts: After 4 months of use at home (never traveled with it), a crack formed from the screw on the right side of the hinge of the "LCD Mask" (the plastic bezel around the screen). I believe this is due to the badly designed hinge which make the screen flex when you open it.

I sent it in for repair expecting them to replace the plastic bezel, instead they wanted me to pay $175 to repair it.

They told me that the crack is "Normal Wear and Tear" and kept telling me they understand how frustrating this is but that it is not covered under warranty.

Will not be buying a Toshiba laptop again and would not recommend one to anyone, unless you want it to break apart on you after a couple months.

4 out of 5 eggsThe Ferrari of gaming laptops

Pros: The Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q896 is a real head turner, with it's huge 18.4" 1080p HD display and stylish black and red "fusion finish". While it can easily handle typical laptop uses such as creating office documents, web surfing, and emailing, this is NOT your mother's laptop. With it's quad core i7 processor and Nvidia GTX 460M graphics chipset, this notebook has the speed and power necessary to take on the most performance demanding games you can throw at it. I've been running Fallout 3, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and Dead Space 2 on high detail without a hiccup. The sound quality is phenomenal with the built in Harman / Kardon speakers, and the backlit keyboard with number pad looks cool, feels natural, and is comfortable while typing. I bought my first Blu Ray disc and was thoroughly impressed by the clarity and sharpness of the display. Toshiba recently released a BIOS update that increases the screen brightness to a level that will burn your retinas!

Cons: Toshiba clearly had a desktop replacement in mind when designing this beast, as it weighs in at over 10 lbs. The power brick is also a heavy burden, especially since the battery is only good for about 2-1/2 hours of non-gaming use. The cooling fans seem to be inadequate to handle the heat that the processor and graphics chipset produces during extended gaming sessions. Don't even try playing a graphic intensive game with this thing on your lap. In fact, I highly recommend using a notebook cooler to help disperse heat and prolong the life of the laptop. The media controls on the immediate left of the keyboard would have been better placed across the top below the speakers, as they are touch sensitive and it is easy to "pinky tap" them while typing. The touch pad and space bar are too narrow for the size of the display, and the power jack input on the right hand side inhibits mouse use when plugged in. The shiny black finish easily shows fingerprints and smudges. The webcam is terrible.

Other Thoughts: I spent about a month researching gaming notebooks, trying to find that perfect price / performance sweet spot while avoiding that ugly generic look and feel that so many exhibit. I must admit that it was love at first sight when I laid eyes upon the X505. If you are a serious gamer looking for a notebook that can hold it's own with today's demanding requirements while not destroying your pocketbook, you owe it to yourself to look into the Toshiba X505 series.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: This machine is extremely fast. The combination of the Intel i7 processor and the nvida m460 graphics card makes for very stable platform. The 18 inch screen is hugh. I have replace my desktop with this Toshiba qosmio X505=Q896 computer

Cons: At 11-13lb, it is heavy. Had a hard time finding a case to fit my laptop. I went back to the Toshiba.com site and found one case for a special price of $35. The case is well built and has all kinds of pockets.

4 out of 5 eggsSo far so good.

Pros: Stable and doesn't lock up or freeze. Bought this for my wife and she couldn't be happier. Great screen size and graphics resolution. Very good for videos and moderate gaming. Backlit keys are nice. Full 10 key number pad is appreciated.

Cons: I can't stand all the finger prints. It runs a little slower than I anticipated. A lot of Toshiba bloatware installed. Have to replace RAM if you want to increase size.

Other Thoughts: Got it on sale for Christmas gift for 1499.99 so can't complain.

5 out of 5 eggsX505-Q896 LOVE IT

Pros: I LOVE this laptop. It replaced a 5 year old DV8000 series HP that had a 200M ATI low grade video card. It would average 2-4 FPS in Wow and would shut down after like 30 minutes. This computer is as good as my home computer that I built in April which is an I7 750 quad core, 4 gb RAM, and an ATI 5770 vid card with 1gb DDR5 on board RAM. I mainly use this laptop to play WOW and I hover around 60 fps. It does get pretty hot after hours of playing WOW but it doesn't shut down. I am active duty military and have been using it while on leave xmas. I am taking it back with me to my Active duty ARMY base and will update after usage for a few months. Other things that are fantastic:
Touch pad can be SHUT OFF with a button!!
Gigabit ethernet
Wireless N built in
Volume control on the keyboard (on left side)
The on board speakers are loud and clear.

Cons: When the fan goes to full speed it does get pretty loud. The BD combo drive is very loud when you put a disc in it. The power pack is HUGE and HEAVY. The touch pad requires a little more pressure than my old HP and I keep accidentally moving my finger off the pad to a position above it for some reason. It might be because of the location of the touch pad and the transition from the pad to the laptop itself is so smooth? There are only 3 USB ports. I have not figured out how the 4th esata/USB combo port works. The laptop has a shiny finish and easily shows finger prints and oils. There are almost no laptop bags that fit. I finally found one: Case Logic VNC-218. Most of the software is trial based and requires you to pay if you want to use it past the trial period.

Other Thoughts: Get a laptop cooler if you game with it. This Cooler master one fits: U3 R9-NBC-8PCK-GP (USB powered) but doesn't move enough air. I got a gift card from Best Buy so I bought (1) Thermaltake Mobile Fan 12 AF0007 (USB powered) and the holes lined up perfectly with the Cooler master U3. I detached the grills and related hardware from the 120mm Thermaltake mobil fan and used some spare fan screws I had laying around to attach the Thermaltake fan to the U3. I positioned it right where the hottest part of the laptop is (top left corner as your facing the laptop). It is much louder than the (3) stock U3 fans but moves 10X more air. If you game online disable checksum offloading in the adaptor settings and adjust TCP/IP Ack settings. I was able to improve my latency in WOW from 200-400ms down to 70-200ms. When I compared this laptop to Asus and Acer there were subtle things Asus and Acer did to save money (use slower HDD, slower RAM, or weaker vid card).

5 out of 5 eggsOne fast notebook!

Pros: I got this on sale so the price was great for what I got. The CPU might appear to be low but with hyper-threading when you look into the device settings there are 8 x 1.73Ghz CPU's there but that is only good if you are running a program or game that takes advantage of it. Four GB of DDR3, 500GB, 7200RPM hard drive and great speakers makes this a top gaming laptop and for any other graphics intensive programs that you would use a laptop for. I have so far only played Singularity on it but I am playing on the highest resolution and settings with no problems at all.

Cons: My hands are too big I guess for this keyboard but I am not yet used to a laptop as I usually build my own systems with normal keyboards. The sound and Blue RaY/dvd BURNER'S SETTINGS ARE DIRECTLY TO THE LEFT OF THE KEYBOARD AND i KEEP HITTING THEM all the time or like you see here I hit the caps lock all the time but all of this may be my inexperience with a laptop and in time I will be better at it.
The glossy black areas are fingerprint and dust magnets.

Other Thoughts: I intend on installing a 120GB SSD soon to make it even faster. This thing weights 10lbs so get a good backpack or gaming carrier of some type for it. Overall I am very happy with this purchase and of course from the egg.
