5 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop with one exception

Pros: There isn't anything not to like about it except the speakers. Keyboard has excellent feel (I'm a very fast touch typist) CPU and disk are more than up using it to develop software in Eclipse. Windows Experience Index numbers are 6.6, 6.6, 4.5, 5.2, 5.9. Except for graphics, those scores are on par with a very fast E8400 based desktop system and even the graphics numbers are on par with most built-in graphics adapters, desktop or laptop. It does not get hot even when used plugged in so you can sit with it in your lap for hours. Even when the fan is running it's quiet. I ordered an 8GB upgrade for it (newegg part #N82E16820231294) and it'll handle anything thrown at it, even running a couple of VMWare player virtual machines while streaming video. The crapware is pretty minimal, it only took about 10 minutes to clean up the install. Webcam quality is excellent, it works fine with Skype.

Cons: As someone else pointed out, make sure you update the BIOS to at least 2.10, otherwise the keyboard will flake out on you randomly. The speakers... well, I don't have a huge amount of experience with listening to lots of laptop speakers but I can't believe there aren't better ones than these. These are so tinny sounding it's simply not bearable to listen to music on it unless using headphones. Tinny, screechy, help help I'm bleeding from the ears quality sound through the speakers. Playback through some good quality headphones though and audio is perfect, no stutters, no pops, no background hiss or hum. A minor down side is that it comes with Windows 7 Home Premium on it. That means you can connect from this laptop to another computer using remote desktop, but you can't connect from another computer to this laptop. If you want to be able to run this one remotely you'll have to upgrade to Windows 7 Pro for another $90.

Other Thoughts: I would have rated it 4.8 if I could have given fractional eggs - the speakers are bad but not quite a whole egg's worth of bad.

I wanted a laptop with a 1920x1200 display but I couldn't see spending the extra thousand bucks for one. This one is excellent and perfectly usable at 1600x900. The problem is that when I use Windows remote desktop to connect to my primary workstation (which is 1900x1200) it re-sizes all the windows to fit on the laptop screen. It's a bit annoying having to go back and tweak all the window sizes after every RDP session. That's not the Toshiba's fault, it's just another thing to consider about when choosing any laptop.

4 out of 5 eggsBetter than Normal Laptop

Pros: Over-sized LED-LCD is a Plus!
Ten keys, Stereo Speakers, big 500GB hard drive and 4GB memory.
HDMI output
Multi-touch pad is cool!

Cons: No hardware volume buttons or dial.
Not enough space between regular keyboard (Left) and the ten keys (Right). It could be confusing in the beginning.
Multi-touch pad is quite sensitive. I accidiently change the zoom rate in IE8 many times.

Other Thoughts: There are bugs in BIOS. Make sure you go to Toshiba support and download BIOS 2.1 or higher.
I have a Dell Inspirson E1705 (also 17" LCD Laptop) before this one. Although Toshiba satellite L675-S108 is a lot faster, my wife and I like E1705 better. E1705 has hardware button to control volume, mute, and skip song in WMP. E1705 is easier and better for multimedia / entertainment playback use.
I got my L675 for about $550 while the E1705 was slightly over $1000. So, overall, I am very happy with my purchase. L675 is not perfect but it is close.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat computer

Pros: Was impressed there was very little crapware. I uninstalled Norton and that was it so far. Lots of features and attractive case. Nice sized speakers, nice sound. Boots up fast. Did not buy from Newegg. Found it on sale. Good value.

Cons: Two USB ports on the right side front. DVD is to the rear. I prefer them reversed as using a mouse with other things plugged in gets in the way. No big deal. Flat type keyboard but that is not a problem either.
